We are starting with Africa because it is often called the birthplace of the human race. Fossils over 2 million years old have been found here, and the changes throughout out the centuries to this continent have been astounding. In this unit, we will examine the impact of 6 key themes that have shaped Africa’s history, and influenced it’s global standing today. The main themes are geography, history and government, social patterns, culture/belief systems, economics, and contemporary issues. The first theme we will examine is geography, and this PowerPoint will introduce us to the wide spectrum of Africa’s geography.
We will be doing a lot of free writes this year. Reason for this is writing your ideas greatly helps with comprehension, as well as assists with presenting your thoughts in a clear manner. I will assess the free writes by coming around to check on your focus, asking for participation, or periodically collecting your responses.
Africa has a very diverse ecosystem that is influenced by it’s geography.
Rainforests are located in West Africa, and the Congo River basin.

The majority of Southern Africa is grasslands.
Africa is composed of 53 countries, and many ethnic groups and cultures. Throughout this unit, we will examine the development of this continent.
