Google Maps AR navigation was announced at Google I/O 2019. It uses augmented reality and a smartphone camera to overlay turn-by-turn directions on the real world view, pointing users in the right direction to walk rather than just showing a map. It first launched for Pixel smartphones and will expand to other Android devices. The AR function works by calculating a walking route, then identifying surroundings using computer vision to match what the camera sees to Street View images while providing directions and alerts in the real world view through the smartphone screen.
3. When will google maps AR launch?
• Google Maps AR navigation was first demoed at
Google I/O in 2019.
• Having used Google Maps AR on the,
* Pixel 3a XL * Pixel 3a
• Preview will be coming to other Google Maps
users soon , probably on Pixel devices initially.
4. What is Google Maps AR navigation ?
• Designed to let you use augmented reality to help
you navigate when walking.
• It uses the camera on the rear of the phone to
identify where you are.
• Identifies what you can see, while the GPS helps
put in position on the map.
5. • Direction and details on the display,
rather than just presenting you with a map.
• If there's no Google Street View in your
area, the AR navigation won't work.
• Google Maps AR helps get around that problem
of not knowing which way to walk
- because the AR can then point in the right
direction.
6. If you’re a PIXEL smartphone user,
• You’ll now see a much different version of walking
directions via Google Maps than before.
• Instead of an boring blue dot on an artificial map,
you’ll get arrows superimposed in the real world to
show you where to turn next.
• Big cheers at Google I/O for this one.
7. How do I find google maps AR?
• The AR function is easy
to find in Google Maps.
• Search for a destination
you want to walk to.
• Make sure you've
selected walking
• Tap the "Start AR"
button at the bottom of
the page
8. How do I use google maps AR ?
• Once you hit the button, the AR page will open.
• Then the best route will be calculated.
• The directions will start, with the normal voice
instructions.
• At this point, google maps will then attempt to
identify what is around you by scanning what
your camera will see and comparing it to street
view imagery.
• This happens in the top of the screen, while the
bottom of the screen has normal walking
directions.
9. • If you're pointing the wrong way, google maps AR
will either show you a huge arrow directing you in
a different direction , or you'll get a small indicator
at the edge of the screen.
• Move your phone around to see what the indicator
is alerting you to and off you go.
• Google maps AR will show you road names and
distances.
• However, to see the AR instructions you need your
phone up and pointing at the street in front of you.
