3. Industry Relations
Industry Relations comprises of two words Industry and Relations.
`Industry’ covers economic activity like producing or processing or manufacturing of goods/services
which is performed by a group of workers
`Relations’ refers to the relationship between the employer/management and the workers within
the industry/workplace.
So, Industrial Relations encompasses the relationship between the management and workers and
the role of a regulatory body to resolve any industrial dispute.
Industry Relations is defined by many authors. According to Ordway, Tead and Metcalf,
“Industrial relation is the composite result of the attitudes and approaches of employers and employees
towards each other with regard to planning, supervision, direction and coordination of the activities of an
organization with a minimum of human efforts and frictions with an animating spirit of cooperation and with
proper regard for the genuine well-being of all members of that organization.”
Industrial Relations Mainly Covers the Followings:

• Collective Bargaining
• The role of management, trade unions and government
• Labor Legislation

• To develop and maintain good employer-employee relation
• To safeguard the interest of labor and management
• To encourage constructive bargaining
• To avoid industrial conflicts and maintain a harmony between labor
and management
• To establish and maintain Industrial Democracy
• To help in maintaining discipline among workers
• To bring down strikes, lockouts, gheraos and other pressure
• To maintain industrial peace
• To raise productivity to a higher level
• To Accelerate economic progress of the country
5. Causes of Poor Industrial Relations
• Mental inertia on the part of management and labor
• An intolerant disrespect attitude towards the workers
• Inadequate fixation of wage or wage structure
• Unhealthy working conditions
• Indiscipline
• Lack of human relations skill(soft skills) on the part of supervisors and
other managers
• Desire for higher bonus or DA and the corresponding desire of employers
to pay as little as possible

• Inappropriate introduction of automation without providing the right
climate
• Unduly heavy workloads
• Inadequate welfare facilities
• Dispute on sharing the gains of productivity
• Unfair labor practices like victimization and undue dismissal
• Retrenchment, dismissals and lock-outs on management end and strikes
on the workers end
• Inter-union rivalries
• General economic and political environment such as rising prices, strikes
by others, and general indiscipline having their effect on the employees’
attitudes
7. Conditions of Good Industrial Relations
Employer’s recognition that workers are the part of team who works for the achievement of the
industry
Provision of the proper working conditions and facilities
Provision soft skills or human relations training to workers, technical and managerial staff
Ensuring payment of wages in due time
Creation of such environment within the industry that upholds the moral of employers and
employees.
Positive attitude of workers in respect of producing quality product
Non-interference by the politicians irrespective of any ism or doctrine
Opportunity to enjoy reasonable percentage of increased productivity or gains
Provision of adult education of employees
Employees participation at all levels and encourage in collective Bargaining. They are required to
be adequately informed about such decisions which may affect their interest
