Fractions
    Fraction of a whole

What will we learn today?
 • Comparing and ordering fractions.
Let's do some counting...
How many squares are there?
But, what if there is only part of a
square?
How do we count it?
We will use FRACTIONS.

Fractions are for counting PART of something.
Let’s break the square into parts.

There are 4 equal parts in a complete square.
How many parts can you see?

  There is 1 equal part.
Here is how we write it.

We can write ¼ , which means
1 equal parts out of 4 parts.
Here's how we write it:

            ¼
We read this like "one fourth."
Here's how we write it:

                           ¼
The top number is called
     the numerator

We read this like "one fourth."
Here's how we write it:

                           ¼
The top number is called
     the numerator

The top number is called
   the denominator

We read this like "one fourth."
Let’s try some more questions.
How much is blue?
How much is blue?

3 pieces are blue out of 4 total pieces.
How much is blue?

                    So, ¾ of the square
                    is blue.

3 pieces are blue out of 4 total pieces.
Check out this triangle.
How much is yellow?
Let’s break it apart.
Let’s break it apart.

1 piece are blue out of 4 total pieces.
Let’s break it apart.
                    So, ¼ of the square
                    is blue.

                         We read as
                        ‘one fourth’.

1 piece are blue out of 4 total pieces.
Which of the following figure has a
greater fraction?

           A B
Which of the following figure has a
greater fraction?

           A B
Which of the following figure has a
greater fraction?

            A B
           The answer is B.
Figure B has 2 yellow parts.
Figure A has only 1 yellow part.
Peter bought 1 pizza.
John ate 1 slice.
Mina ate 2 slices.
How many slices are there in the pizza
if Peter ate the same number of slices
as John?
Peter bought 1 pizza.
John ate 1 slice.
Mina ate 2 slices.
How many slices are there in the pizza
if Peter ate the same number of slices
as John?
                        Peter ate 1 slice
                        of pizza.

         1 + 2 + 1 = 4
Let’s practise!
