CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION
The phrase cross-cultural communication describe the
ability to successfully form foster, and improve relationship
with member of a culture different from one’s own . It is based
on knowledge of many factors, such as the other culture’s
values , perception , manners , social structure , and decision
making practices and an understanding of how member of the
group communicate-verbally , non-verbally , in person , in
writing , in various business and social contexts , to name but
a few.
Like speaking a foreign language a riding a bicycle , cross-
cultural communication involves a skill component that may
best be learned and mastered through instruction and practice
: simply reading about it is not enough.
 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
CROSS-CULTURE
COMMUNICATION is a field of study that looks at
how people from differing culture background
communicate, in similar and diffrent ways among
themselves and how they endeavor to communicate
across cultures.
Characteristics of cultural
 Cultural is not inherent , but learned
 Cultures are rooted in deep seated beliefs
 Cultures is the basis for self-identity and community
 Cultures are dynamic.
Ten tips for cross cultural communication
 Slow down
 Separate question
 Avoid negative question
 Take turns.
 Write it down.
 Be supportive.
 Check meanings.
 Avoid slang
 Watch the humour.
 Maintain etiquette.
 Cultural differences
Some cultures are emotional and boisterous ,
while others hide emotions and try to demonstrate
only rational behaviour ; these differences are
widely variable around the world and by country .
Cultures differ based on religious beliefs ,
educational systems ,government , history and a
wide range of other considerations .with so many
variables ,understanding when there are potential
culture differences is a key to preventing problems
that can result from the differences.
 BODY LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES
Facial expression and body language differ as
much as speaking aloud. For example ,some cultures
look directly into the eyes when speaking to you,
while others will look down or away from your eyes
when speaking .The use of body language can create
as many misunderstandings as verbal language due
to the misinterpretation of body language.
PROBLEMS FROM CULTURAL AND
LANGUAGE BARRIERS
The main problems that arise from cultural
differences and language barriers is misunderstanding
or misinterpretation . Each party within the group
need to learn about the others cultures to attempt to
prevent misunderstanding .In case of language
barriers , taking time to pay attention to the words
spoken will prevent serious problems with language .
Learning about various translations between words
can minimize the problem .but usually it requires
discussion if a misunderstanding takes place.
THANK YOU
