2. Why Did I Conduct A Survey?
O I conducted a simple survey to find out
more about my audiences preferences.
O My video will be target at a specific
audience within the Indie genre however I
still want it to have some mass appeal to
it.
O I also wanted to see how my audience
consume music videos, as this will be
useful when publishing on certain
platforms.
3. How I Conducted The Survey
O I created the survey using an online
survey creator. (www.smartsurvey.com)
O Because my survey was online based I
could research a wider range of age
groups that I would not have access to
otherwise.
O To gain varried audience feedback I
posted my survey on social media
(Facebook and Twitter). As you can see
bellow.
4. Results
Note: The survey is ongoing and percentages and results may change over time. I used 20
responses to create these results.
O The first question I asked was “How old are you?” I started with
this question because I wanted to know what age range was
taking my survey as I will be able to compare and contrast the
results from each age range.
O The majority of the people who took the survey are Under 18
this may be because I asked my peers and friends to take the
survey. However some 18-24 and a handful of 25-34
responded, this is good as I can see if peoples opinions on
music videos and consumption changes with age. This will be
useful when trying to market my video to all age ranges.
5. Results

20 responses to create these results.
O I also asked my audience what gender they are,
this is because I wanted to know if gender affects
how you consume music videos and what the
choose to consume.
O Luckily I got a 50/50 split male and female in my
survey, this is good as it shows that gender does
not affect interests in music videos.

20 responses to create these results.
O My next question was “How often do you watch music
videos?” I asked this because if I was asking people
who never watched music videos the data would be
invalid as they are not the audience I am targeting.
O All the people who did the survey luckily watched music
videos on a regular basis or all the time.
O This shows that music videos are revel vent and actually
entice an audience.
7. Results
Note: The survey is ongoing and percentages and results may change over time. I used 20
responses to create these results.
O I asked my audience how they consume music videos, I
did this because I wanted to see what the most
successful platform was. This is important because I
want my video to reach an audience and this can be
affected by what platform you publish it on.
O The results show that the main way of consuming music
videos is through the internet on applications like
YouTube. I will be using this when considering what I
want my video to be published on.

O I then asked “Which area in a music video is the most
important?”. I wanted to find out if my audience thought
that one aspect of a video is more important than
another.
O As you can see by the results the largest % was on all 3
of the aspects, this is good as it suggests that and
audience want a video that excels in all areas and not
just one. I will be using this when making creative
decisions later on.
9. Results

O I then asked about the content of the video as well as it is just as
important as the technical aspects.
O As you can see by the results it is rather mixed, I believe this is because
I have a wide range of ages and different types of audiences based on
their music likes and dislikes.
O Within this section I got a ‘other’ answer and this says “depends on the
genre of music, the tempo of the music and the feel of the music and the
lyrics of the video. It is also depends on the artist themselves and their
personality and what the media portrays them as”. I 100% agree with this
comment and looking back the question I asked was too open ended as
many different genres use different conventions when making music
videos.

O I asked my audience “Do you watch music videos
outside of your preferred genre?” I did this
because I wanted to know if a good music video
would sway people out of their comfort zone.
O I was shocked with the response as over 60% of
people who took the survey said they do, this
suggests that music videos can make people listen
to the music they do not usually prefer.
11. Results
O The last question I asked was a open question, I asked “What is your
favourite music video? Why is this your favourite?” I asked this because I
wanted to know from the audience point of view what makes a good
music video and what makes it stand out.
O “Warriors by imagine dragons. This is because it shows a narrative but
the video still matches the music from the song. when the song moves
from one phrase to another, so does the music video so the video builds
on the suspense and tension that the music is already creating.” This
response is one that stood out to me as it suggests that progression of
narrative along with the song is good, as it keeps the audience hooked
on the video. This is an aspect that I wanted to try and add to my video.
O “Alt-J - Breezeblocks The video is good because the narrative is played
backwards, also the video look really cool because of the setting” This is
another response that stood out to me, this video has a simple narrative
but is made interesting by playing it backwards, and the mise-en-scene
is also very nice and fitting. The idea of narrative progressing in a
unconventional order may be something I look into further as it seems
interesting
