It gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate in this year’s Campus Placement
Program at IIM Kozhikode. We are the fastest growing IIM in the country, having
increased our students intake five fold in the last seven years.
The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode is fast emerging as an internationally
reckoned and fully-integrated management Institute of higher learning. It is now nearly
13 years old and in light of the fast changing socio-economic environment, we are
persistently innovating. Each year has been momentous in the progress and growth of
our Institute.
In these years, the Institute has maintained its placement record by consistently being
among the top 10 institutions in the country. A total of 309 students have registered for
the first year and about 250 have been promoted to the second year of the Post Graduate
Program at IIM Kozhikode.
The institution is built on core values of passion, growth and commitment to the society,
that help instil our students with positive mental attitude as well as good business acumen
helping them take up highest responsibilities in various organizations. IIM Kozhikode has
devoted itself towards transforming talented individuals into true business leaders of
tomorrow. The Post Graduate curriculum at IIM Kozhikode is designed in such a manner
that it incorporates several innovative features that are desirable to meet the rising

5. 5IIMK Recruitment Guide 2009-2010
On behalf of the faculty and students of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode,
I welcome you to the recruitments 2009-2010.
The last year’s placement season at IIMK was a great success, a fact that reaffirms the
unwavering faith and confidence of the recruiters in the intellect of IIMK. The impact of the
recessionary sentiments notwithstanding, we successfully placed a batch of 185 students
(the largest batch of the Institute till date) to which a total of 251 offers were made by 94
firms that participated in the process.
An even more satisfying aspect was the increased participation from new emerging
sectors such as Media & Environment, and a healthy representation of Non-profit
organizations and Public sector firms. The regular recruiters from the Financial and
Banking sector, Marketing firms, business conglomerates and the Consulting industry
further added to the career choices available to the graduating students.
Our success in placements and the respect that IIMK commands in the business
community is the result of an unflinching commitment towards the pursuit of excellence.
We select the best brains in the country through a process that is reputed to be amongst
the toughest admission processes. The students are exposed to the rigor and discipline of
academic life that goes beyond mere conventional learning and inculcates an ability
to work on unforeseen and challenging decision problems. They are assisted and guided
in this process by a team of highly dedicated faculty members and a motivated peer
group.
While it is immensely satisfying to see how IIMK has carved a strong identity for itself in
a span of mere 13 years since its inception in 1996, this is no time to rest on our laurels.
It is our constant endeavour to consistently outperform ourselves and develop a culture
of academic excellence and leadership that can produce business leaders of distinction.
I would like to thank all our past recruiters for their faith in us through good times and
bad. I promise a great recruitment opportunity and experience to those who would
begin their relationship with IIMK this year.

Placement Chairperson

Coca Cola made the
best domestic internship
offer with a stipend of
INR 1 lakh whereas,
Vega Food, a Singapore
based company, offered
best international offer
of US $6,000.
Summer Recruitment Process is carried out during the month of October, and
summer interns chosen by an organization join at the end of the first year (April
and May) and the internship lasts a minimum of 8 weeks.
The summer assignment provides a unique experience for the student in the
following ways:
1. Gives a chance to apply concepts learnt in the first year to practical scenarios
while trying to add as much value as possible to the organization
2. Provides an Exposure to the workings of an organization and the links across the
different functions
3. Helps the student make a more informed decision regarding the career path
to choose
By recruiting summer interns, organizations also get a chance to form a unique
relationship with the Institute. This enables them to gauge the potential of a
candidate over a two-month long period. The Summer Recruitment process is
divided into slots, wherein the companies participating in placements are allotted
slots based on a democratic process.
The following parameters are taken into consideration during the slotting process:
a. The nature of the internship projects given
b. The brand value of organization and the existing relationship shared by the
organization
c. The Institute
Offers made in the first slot are ‘List Offers’, i.e. offers are given in a sealed envelope
which are opened at the end of the slot. A student is permitted to choose one of
possible multiple offers. Offers in subsequent slots are made on the spot which the
student must then accept, thus deemed as‘Spot Offers’.
Based on the internship project work the concerned organization can also make a
Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) to the student, acceptance of which is decided upon by
the student at the end of the recruitment season.
9. 9IIMK Recruitment Guide 2009-2010
Despite the anxieties and fear of reduced hiring due to the global economic scenario,
national and international companies flocked to IIM Kozhikode for the Summer
Recruitment Process for the batch of 2008-2010.
With 102 firms (up from 66 last year) participating in the process, the 261 students of the
batch were placed in firms of their choice. What makes this commendable is the fact that
this was achieved in a year in which the student intake rose by 42% and recruiters across
all verticals were cutting back on the number of offers
A coordinated effort by the faculty, alumni and the Placements Committee along with the
strong relationship which the Institute shares with its industry partners ensured that the
Class of 2010 had no dearth of offers even in these economically severe times.
Summers 2009 saw students walk away with 14 International offers across various functions
and in locations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Dubai, South Africa and London.

Lateral placementS
Final placementS
Lateral Placements are conducted for the students having a certain level of work
experience in the industry and is organized during the month of January.
It provides an opportunity to the students to leverage their prior work experience
and to negotiate with the organization for a designation higher than that of a
management trainee or an entry role MBA graduate.
The offer acceptance by the student depends on the mutual understanding among
the organization and the student. The student and organization are allowed to
negotiate on the key issues such that pay package and designation.
Companies benefit by gaining from the added advantage of accessing a rich talent
pool with relevant exposure to the respective industry.
Final Placements are conducted at the end of the second year for final year students
during the month of March.
During Final Placements, companies are allotted slots based on a democratic slotting
process (similar to the process as detailed for Summer Placements). The system of
List Offers is followed in all the slots during Final Placements.
A total of 94 firms took part in the placement process last year making a total of 251
offers to a batch of 185 students. Students bagged a total of 23 international offers
last year.
The highest international offer was USD 120,000. The highest domestic offer stood
at INR 24 lakhs made by an investment bank based out of Mumbai. Though this is a
decrease from what was achieved the year before, IIMK managed to minimize the
impact on both the average salaries and the median package. Despite the global
economic slowdown, IIMK students ended the placements with an average annual
salary of INR 10.61 lakhs.
IIM Kozhikode has always strived in creating entrepreneurs and the past year saw
two students deciding to avail the placement holiday in order to start ventures
of their own.

DISTRIBUTING PUBLISHED MATERIAL
Annual reports, pamphlets and other published material are an effective
medium for disseminating information and increasing awareness about
the company. Such material can be sent to the Placements Committee
or Placements Office, for further distribution among students.
CONDUCTING CASE STUDY COMPETITIONS
Holding case study competitions are an engaging way for recruiters to
create interest about the company on campus. Typically, the company
provides a case to theparticipating teams of students for analysis, to be
evaluated by a panel comprising company executives and faculty of the
Institute. Case contests can be held specifically for IIM K students only,
or as part of our annual B School fest, Backwaters. It serves not only as
a mechanism to invoke interest among students towards the company
but also as an alternative route for recruitment by offering Pre
Placement Interviews/Offers (PPIs/PPOs) to the winning team(s).
CORPORATE REPRESENTATION ON CAMPUS
Corporate Representation on Campus – Company personnel may come
down to campus and interact with students via formal presentations
and/or informal workshops. This method of company representation has
stood the test of time and works best to find the right talent.
FLOATING LIVE PROJECTS
Live projects involve a team of students, in conjunction with a faculty
member from the institute and a company representative, working on
a problem that the company is faced with. Live projects serve as a useful
medium for the company to spot talent even before the formal
placement process gets underway and offer PPIs/PPOs to candidates
who they feel have performed as per their expectations.
INTERACTING WITH STUDENT CLUBS
Each of the above mentioned avenues to strengthen relationship can
be routed through various student clubs at IIM Kozhikode.

IIMK is dedicated to offer world-class programs in Management education and aspires to
become a major learning resource center in the Asia-Pacific Region. The Institute endeavors to
develop the necessary environment through the synergy of faculty, students, business
and the industry. Being a part of IIM family of institutions, which have earned worldwide repu-
tation for academic excellence, the Institute strives hard for maintaining international stan-
dards in all of its academic activity.
The Institute is located at Kunnamangalam, Kozhikode (also known as Calicut) in the state
of Kerala, popularly known as“The God’s own Land”. Calicut is a historic city where
Vasco-da-Gama, a Portuguese navigator, landed in 1498, discovering a sea route between India
and Europe. Kunnamangalam town, where the IIMK campus is situated, is famous for a large
number of lush green hills, a unique feature that cannot be described but only experienced.
The Institute is situated on two hills, with the buildings blending in the lush greenery with a
mix of traditional Kerala style ethnic architecture and modern amenities.
The visitors can have this unparalleled view of miles of Kerala greenery from every nook
and corner of IIMK. They can also enjoy the panoramic view of a hill station, sea beaches
and backwaters, all at one place.

“The most important thing
IIMK gave me during my
stay there is perspective;
the ability to look at things in
totality; to understand the
interplay of events; to
separate out the noise from
the substance and to think
creatively for solutions. I
can’t say that I do this
because I learnt that in IIMK
or I thought of this because
I had practiced that in
college; it’s the sum total of
all that I learnt and observed
there; all that is now a
part of me that guides my
everyday actions in my
professional and personal
life. I am happy and proud
that I got an opportunity
to be a part of IIMK. ”
