3. Setting the Gold Standard Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
How many times have you been asked: “Do Girl Scouts have anything Board of Directors, FY 2009
equivalent to the Eagle Scout?” Officers
Allison Ochoa, Chair
Imagine if we could turn the tables, change perceptions, increase Shirley J. Mosher, First Vice Chair
awareness—so people would ask “Do Boy Scouts have anything similar Betty Greer, Second Vice Chair
to the Gold Award?” Karin Gillette, Secretary
Shelley L. Hunt, Treasurer
That’s exactly what we intend to do.

4. Finding Courage, Fighting Grief
How one Goddard Girl Scout found Hope by Honoring a Dear Friend
At 17, you’re supposed to have your whole life ahead of you. Late-night
conversations with friends are supposed to center around the ups and
downs of teenage relationships, college plans and putting together
that “perfect” prom outfit—not on cancer treatment. But for one
Goddard Girl Scout and her dear friend Audra (affectionately
called “Audie”) cancer was unfortunately a topic of
conversation many times.
Ambassador Girl Scout Erin Blitz showed true Courage,
when she faced the grief of losing a dear friend
head-on, and completed a Gold Award project that
not only honored Audie’s legacy, but brought hope
and comfort to children whose lives have been turned
upside down by a devastating diagnosis.
Erin recalls vividly how the idea for her project,
“Audie’s Odds and Ends” came about.
“Audie passed away four days before her 18th birthday. Prior to her final hospitalization, she discovered that I
was trying to complete my Gold Award, and we brainstormed different ideas. She spoke of the unbelievable
boredom she experienced while in the hospital as a child and teenager. A few months after her passing, I recalled
our conversation and decided that the best way to honor our friendship was to complete the project she had
suggested.”
Erin sought the assistance of a Gold Award advisor, Allison Wright, to help her formulate, develop and carry out a
plan to create tote bags filled with toys and entertainment for pediatric cancer patients at Via Christi St. Francis.
5. Erin spent nearly 100 hours sewing, ironing, and stuffing
100 bags before delivering them on March 9, 2009, just
two days after what would have been Audie’s 19th birthday.
My friends often ask about my project and we
reminisce about Audra. We think of the sensitive
young woman who attended marching band
camp during the heat of the summer
and who persevered through the pain of just
walking onto the field for Color Guard
performances,” said Erin “I found sewing isn’t my best
talent, but every hour I spent sewing tote bags is worth the
distraction for a sick child. I think Audie would be pleased
with the outcome.
Courage
6. From Bronze, to Silver, to Gold—the Benchmark of Success
Five Belleville Girl Scouts Create Restful Place for Community
Their Gold Award project may have centered on benches, but these Ambassador Girl Scouts have done anything but sit
around. Belleville Girl Scouts Erica Hadachek, Courtney Kasl, Laura Monsanto, Haley Hiatt and Jacie Jackson learned
firsthand the definition of “sweat equity.”
This is no ordinary Girl Scout Troop. Four of the five girls have been members
of Girl Scout Troop 20536 for 13 years, with the fifth not far behind with
12 years of membership. Not only have they progressed through each level
of Girl Scouting, they’ve also all earned their Bronze and Silver Awards.
Going for the Gold Award seemed the next logical step, they just
needed a project. Republic County High School Counselor
Chris Klos approached the girls wanting to know if they would
help build benches for the community. He had received a grant
through the Resource Council and offered to supervise the
project. The girls helped him build four benches last summer,
donating one to the community of Munden, two to the Girl
Scouts, and one to the Methodist Church in Belleville. But they
didn’t stop there. “Most of us attend the Methodist Church here,
and we wanted to give something back for all the support they’ve
shown us for the past 13 years,” said Jacie Jackson. “We wanted to
create a nice area around the bench with landscaping that could be used for
Vacation Bible School, Sunday school classes, weddings, etc.”
Carol Monsanto, the girls’ troop leader for the past 13 years, saw first-hand how hard the girls worked to create a
peaceful sanctuary.
“The project took a lot of physical labor,” said Carol. “The ground was not of good quality and required a lot of work to
take the sod out. For the limestone, they actually went out to a pasture, dug it out, and transported it back to the church.”

8. Stone by Stone, Colby Girl Scout Builds Character
Hard Work and Hours of Labor Result in Peace Garden
“Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths,
but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”
-Anne Frank
If Character lies in one’s own hands, Ambassador Girl Scout Amanda
Barnum of Colby has certainly earned her share. Her vision for a
Peace Garden at her local church took hours of hard labor to carry
out, but the result is well worth it.
Amanda, an active member of Girl Scouting since Kindergarten,
is no stranger to earning awards for her community service efforts.
In the spring/summer of 2004 her troop (# 10162) earned their Bronze
Award by scraping, priming and painting the benches at the local
baseball diamonds, and earned their Silver Award in 2007 by hosting an
overnight event for Girl Scouts of all ages to celebrate Girl Scout Week. But her
Gold Award project was by far the most strenuous.
“I definitely have more respect for those who work in construction. I don’t know that I could do that kind of work day after day,
week after week,” said Amanda. “Towards the end of the grouting work I really had to persevere; it was getting colder outside
and I was working with wet, rough cement.”
Beginning in September of 2008, Amanda chose the location for the garden, leveled the ground and sand base, built the
retaining wall, laid the flagstone and grouted. In the spring she laid the cement for the path and around the circle to help keep
the wall in place and to give it a “finished” look. She then set the statuary and planted flowers. The garden was complete in
June 2009, taking 10 months to complete.
