2. ABSTRACT
On the process of learning the techniques deployed in the construction of The new High
Court Complex , Madras by the P.Manickam & Co Pvt Ltd , We learnt almost all the
important techniques that were used to build a world class Auditorium and a Court Stack
Complex .We were helped by Er.Punyakodi, Chief Site Supervisor . We were given an
opportunity to work as the Junior Site Supervisors . We were employed to work and Co
Ordinate with the fellow staff members and the workers . We were instructed about the
construction targets on an oral basis and we were responsible for the execution of the
tasks under the guidance of Ass. Supervisors . We had a wonderful opportunity to witness
the growth of a particular building in a step by step manner . We were trained with a
courtesy of reporting to the Site Engineer after each and every target accomplishments
and get them corrected in a right manner. Under the contract to the PWD, began the
construction of the Museum cum Auditorium and a nine floor Court stack Building which
was under the complete monitoring by the Government officials . Various basic tests for
the construction purposes were conducted for the basic construction purposes . The
Foundation laid was a Pile type foundation. This project is the first year in a longterm
effort, and PWD's future monitoring techniques will expand on this baseline information .
I also include a discussion regarding the approach to future expansion of the High court of
Madras .

at a few of our monitoring stations.

5. Introduction
Background:
The location of the site is exactly inside the Madras High Court complex which is
an UNESCO World Heritage monument . The renovation works in the main
court complex were on and the Phase 2 project was undertaken by
P.Manickam& CO . The permission for the entry into the High Court Complex
was through Gate 5 . The highly secured court complex was showcasing its
majestic outlook amidst the Sea Breeze entering gently . The Main purpose of
this Construction is mainly due to the In availability of space inside the Existing
court complex . And the other reason was to have a safe location to preserve
the judiciary files and folders . The project was sparkled up by the Honourable
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi. J. Jayalalithaa . A sum of 5 Million ( Indian
National Currency) was allocated to push the project into the livelihood . A 9
Storey Stack complex , A Two floor Museum Cum Auditorium are the key
Dextrous zeal of the project . And a Multi Purpose Canteen inside the Main
Court complex which is in the stage of Completion . The project was kick
Started by the honourable Chief Justice of India and The Honourable Chief
Minister of Tamil Nadu in the month of January 2013 and the deadline of the
Project has exactly scheduled to 18 Months from its start .

Site Name : High Court of Madras ,Chennai,TamilNadu.
Site History :
In an effort to address concerns regarding the requirement of space to the existing
Court complex at Madras . The Public Works Department of The Government Of Tamil
Nadu(PWD) has contracted with P.Manickam & CO to performmonitoring to assess the
possible effects to bring a change in Construction of the new court complex will have
ambience quality and epibenthic habitat in The judiciary process in the High Court of
6. Madras . The monitoring will provide baseline data on existing benthic communities and
help the Existing High Court Complex in congestion management.
Project Scope and Purpose :
3 .2 .1 Purpose of this Project : This plan is being a contract between PWD(Public
Works Department) and CMDA(Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority),Chennai.

Beginning Date: January 8,2014.
Ending Date : January 20,2014.
Monitoring methods :
Instruction to visit the nine storied High Court stack Complex was given . The
footing laid was Pile cap footing since the Building is above 4 stories . The
strength of the pile footing was learnt and the elevation of the building was
observed and the flaws were noted . The footing for The Elevator section began
, and the footing laid was a double footing . The water table of the particular
site was found to be abnormal and hence a pentanoid was previously used to
excavate the water table from that particular site and the basic foundation
processes were carried out .Pentoroid is a chemical substance which is used to
restrict the flow of water from the springs. Different compositions of
7. pentoroids have found a prominent place in modern constructions in the recent
past. The concrete laid was Plain cement Concrete (PCC) . Then the cadre of the
site engineers were explained which were AE ( Ass.Engieer, Ass.Executive
Engineer , EE (Executive Engineer) . And the instruction to supervise the
construction of stairs to the Green Room in the Auditorium . We found the
elevation towards the Green room from the floor level was pretty high and
instruction was given to alter the Tread and rise levels of the stairs in
accordance to the elevation level from the base line. A spirit level was used to
calculate the Base level and the stairs work was carried out . The normal Tread
and rise is 150mm : 300 mm . But the elevation was comparitively higher . So ,
we used the ratio 170mm:300mm . Hence the steps were perfectly aligned and
the later steps on the other side of the green room was also altered with the
same above . The Prestressed concrete slabs were used as beams in the
auditorium . The ends of the beams were Bulged . This was because of the
absence of Columns in the middle of the auditorium for easy transmission of
sound .Hence these beams were responsible for transferring the load to the
columns and its design also permits them to overcome the absense of columns
in the middle of the auditorium. The pre-stressed concrete slabs were observed
with a different texture and colour . The post tensioning slabs were used as the
roof for the auditorium . The stage was built in a curved manner having a
defined radius. A curvature towards the end of the podium allows proper
propagation of sound throughout the auditorium. Though this design is
outdated, it has been implemented in this project to meet insufficient sound
propagation system, just in case. The basic plastering works were carried out ,
We witnessed the Plastering work in a systematic manner and the mixture was
in the ratio of 1:3 . We were instructed to visit the over head tank which was
having a capacity of 20,000 litres . A leakage in the tank was observed and it was
measured and flow of water was stopped and then it was corrected by
plastering it again . The day ended with the estimation works and the Muzdar
for the workers . We also learnt the estimation and the other billing works
based on the worker's Hours of thriving .The works went on with the basic tiling
works on the terrace was carried out . The lime mortar mixture was used as the
paste for the tiling purposes . We witnessed the tiling process in a step by step
manner and then the over all Level of the tiles were observed to be very much
8. proper and then the tiles were packed together . On the other side , the fixing
of Door Frames were carried out . The door frames were measured to have a
90cm stretch . we found few door frames not measured properly and were
corrected . The packing for the door frames were done with concrete . The
frame ring was held up with the brick work and then the concrete mixture was
poured into it and packed .
One of the most dangerous and challenging task in the construction of a
commercial structure is the construction of lift(s). Here in this case, two lifts
were constructed one next to another. Lifts were constructed close to the stair
case and the electrical duct was just adjacent to it. Initially a duct was laid and a
firm scaffolding was brought from the basement to the roof top. It was learnt
that the safety of an employee working on the empty duct was purely vested
upon the stability of the scaffolding. At first, the ceiling of the duct was drilled
and hooks were installed to hold the lift belts. At each floor, holes were drilled
on the left and right side of the duct, on the left, a single rectangular opening of
one foot, has a set of two screws laid using a rectangular scale having two semi-
circles at a fixed interval. After laying of the metal rods into the rectangular
opening, plastering is done and the opening is finely packed. The dimension of
the rod is 15mm.The gap between two rods is 100mm. The right gap had two
holes,first hole had a dimension of 180mm and the second hole had a diameter
of 200mm.
