Greeks were the first to have citizens They were members of a political community and treated each other as equals Does this mean that everyone in the community was equal?? NO NONONONONONONONONONO!! Only free native born men who owned land were citizens What about women and children?? Women and children could be citizens but had no rights
4. Citizens of Greece – Who was a citizen? What about slaves & people not born in your polis? They were not allowed to be citizens What if you didn’t own land? Some polis’ did away with this rule of owning land, as long as you were a free native born male you could be a citizen!
