What is social media?
O What is social media?
O Social media is best understood as a group of new kinds of online
O media, which share most or all of the following characteristics:
O Participation
O social media encourages contributions and feedback from everyone who is
O interested. It blurs the line between media and audience.
O Openness
O most social media services are open to feedback and participation. They encourage
O voting, comments and the sharing of information. There are rarely any barriers to
O accessing and making use of content – password-protected content is frowned on.
O Conversation
O whereas traditional media is about “broadcast” (content transmitted or distributed to
O an audience) social media is better seen as a two-way conversation.
O Community
O social media allows communities to form quickly and communicate effectively.
O Communities share common interests, such as a love of photography, a political issue
O or a favourite TV show.
O Connectedness
O Most kinds of social media thrive on their connectedness, making use of links to other
O sites, resources and people.

O Antony Mayfield (2008). What is social media (ebook). : iCrossing. Page 5.
Friends and relations
O Keep in contact with close and distant friends.
O Catch up with old friends, see how they‟re doing.
O Can create new relations.
O Allows collaboration and group messaging between a group of
  colleagues, students, friends, family, etc.
O Participation – people can comment/leave feedback on
content, creating discussion and conversations of a particular
  interest.
O Sharing – as well as sharing personal content, everything else
can be shared as well – news articles, websites, photos, videos
and other kinds of information. There are no barriers in the
  information that can be shared.
O Privacy – most social media services allow users to choose
how private or public their information is.
Businesses
O Examine current and future employees – a
profile/news feed of a person often shows what they
  are like.
O Engage with their customers by responding to
questions/comments and keep them updated via a
  page/twitter feed.
O Businesses get widely advertised on social media
websites by appearing in peoples news feeds once
they like their page, or retweet their tweets. Once
they‟re on a social network, they usually spread
  without doing a lot.
O Advertise your own personal business to a large
  audience (friends, followers, etc.)
Reducing communication
         barriers
O Many forms of social media are accessible
  on computers, smartphones, mobile phones
  and tablets. Content, messages and
comments, etc. can be sent immediately.
O Status updates and photos can be shared
  easily unlike before social media.
O It‟s also a new form of e-mail (private
  message, DM, etc.)
O Easy to communicate with businesses.
Charles Darwin

“In the long history of humankind those who
learned to collaborate and improvise most
effectively have prevailed.”

Charles Darwin
Pete Cashmore
“Those who insert themselves into as many
channels as possible look set to capture the
most value. They‟ll be the richest, the most
successful, the most connected, capable and
influential among us. We‟re all publishers now,
and the more we publish, the more valuable
connections we‟ll make.”Founder of
Mashable.Com.
Aliza Sherman

O “To utilize social media tools effectively and
   properly, you must absolutely generate
   spontaneous communications in direct
response to what others are saying or to
what is happening in that moment. Be
   yourself. Be conversational. Be engaged.”
Fast Companys 2009 Most Influential Women
in Technology
Rupert Murdoch
“It is difficult, indeed dangerous to
underestimate the huge changes this
revolution will bring or the powers of
developing technologies to build and destroy
not just companies but whole countries”
