CHARACTERISATION
actual utilization and earlier interventions
• the church is being used in everyday life
• it was evidently recuperated several times
• the convent is abandoned
• most of its structures are in ruins
• old rural houses are mostly abandoned, if they
are being used they are still in a very bad state
CHARACTERISATION
significance of the village Granja
• Agricultural production
• Animal production
• Built patrimony
• Cultural significance
• Religion
AVALIATION OF THE EXISTENT MANAGEMENT
mission
• to recover the significance and socio-economic prospects of the village
• to recover the convent by giving it a new use
• to recover historic examples of rural housing
AVALIATION OF THE EXISTENT MANAGEMENT
legal frame
• immobilities of public interest ( Convent of Cister do Bouro)
• private immobilities (old rural houses)
• unbuilt space between the convent and the main road
THE QUESTIONS OF OWNERSHIP
AVALIATION OF THE EXISTENT MANAGEMENT
vulnerability of the space and factors of vulnerability
• The level of sensitivity of old structures to the interventions and
introduction of new infrastructure.
• Inadequate legal protection of authentic rural housing architecture
from destruction.
AVALIATION OF THE EXISTENT MANAGEMENT
restrictions and opportunities
Strong points
• its rural character and quiet way of life, isolated from the urban culture
• natural ambiental frame and its position in a wider ambient rich with
cultural heritage
• good position in relation to the public transport
• presence of residential population
Weak points
• bad state of conservation of some structures
• bad state of village’s infrastructure
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
• regeneration of the village Granja and its surrounding
• recover of its historical identity
• maximal use of its ambiental potentials
• development of rural tourism
objective – basic concept
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
• introduction of new activities in the village that would attract visitors
throughout the year
• introduction of new activities that would expand the market of its
agricultural production
• recuperation of its most significant structures
• creation of a new image possibly attractive to tourists
strategies
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
creation of
GRANJA YOUTH SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
• The Granja Youth Scientific Centre would be a non-governmental educational
institution which would help and support young people who demonstrate an
inclination and interest for science above regular school curricula. It would be
primarily designed for elementary and high school students but would also offer a
variety of programs for college undergraduates, graduate students and school
teachers.
• Interactive teaching, flexible programs, modern equipment, no regional limits for
students, young leading staff and the possibility of supporting a student’s small
research projects would be the key characteristics of this unique school in
Portugal. Guest teachers and professional scientists would take part as lecturers in
the Center’s different programs developed through seminars, workshops,
science camps, courses and field work, from January to December.
concrete actions
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
Concerning the cultural and physical ambient in which it would be
placed, the Centre could offer programs in the suggested science fields:
Anthropology
Archaeology
Architecture
Astronomy
Biology
Chemistry
Ethnology
Geography
Geology
Physics
Psychology
Sociology
GRANJA YOUTH SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
1. ACADEMIC BUILDING – planned to occupy reconstructed buildings of
an old convent including fully equipped classrooms, laboratory
classrooms, a modern computer classroom with internet services and the
office space.
2. LIBRARY – could be placed in the recuperated chapel.
GRANJA YOUTH SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
The development of this project would need particular physical facilities…

GRANJA YOUTH SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
3. DORMITORY FACILITIES – instead of building an additional
structure for this purpose, the adaptation of existing abandoned old
rural houses in the village could satisfy the need for accommodation of
students, teachers, guest lecturers and eventually tourists. The
question of the property would have to be solved in the interest of the
Centre so their primary use could not be questioned.
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
4. RESTAURANT – in the vacant area between the convent/academic
building and the main road, a new structure can be built with the purpose
to serve all students and lecturers but also should have the capacity to
serve school excursions, one day courses for local students, tourists, etc.
The restaurant would be the property of the Centre (in order not to become
a local drinking bar) but work independently from the Center’s periodical
schedule.
5. ASTRONOMY OBSERVARORY – could be built on a hill hear the village.
It would also be the property of the Centre.
GRANJA YOUTH SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
…and additional, new constructed facilities:

THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
Strategies for solution of vulnerabilities and menaces
Search for adequate methodologies of interventions for the examples of
different patrimonial typologies in the action of their adaptation for new
needs
THE MODEL OF PROPOSED MANAGEMENT
expectations for socio-economic progress
•The market for village’s agricultural products could be extended (Center’s
restaurant would need a constant supply of groceries, meet and other products).
•The Centre would also need local labor for the work in the restaurant
(chefs, caterers…) and for the maintenance of facilities (accommodation
houses, academic building, library, restaurant) and the garden – possibility for new
working places.
•The housing equipment traditionally made in this area would contribute the
traditional image of these rural houses making a sense of authenticity closer to
their users. It could be a free way of marketing for the district’s needlewomen.
•Publicity of the Centre could bring more notice to the North area of Portugal and
consequently lead to even bigger interest in its development.
•Reconstructed identity of the village could automatically contribute to its tourist
attractiveness.
