Welcome
Thanks for purchasing Tips & Tricks –
iPhone Secrets. Here’s how to control
the guide:
About this Edition
Some tips don’t apply if you have
a device that hasn’t been upgraded
to iOS 4 and some only apply to the
3GS and later iPhones. The following
symbols appear throughout:
iOS4 Only works with iOS 4+
    iOS4.2 Only works with iOS4.2
               Only works with 3GS and
    3GS+
               later iPhones with iOS4+
To tell which version your device
is running, go into Settings, then
General, then About. Look for
Version to tell which OS you are on.
Shortcuts
Get there quicker
Tip 1
The Fast Way to the Top!
Reading a web page, email, or SMS text
message? In all of these applications,
tap anywhere on the status bar at the
top to quickly scroll to the top of that page.
This is especially handy in the Messaging
application if you want to call the person
who has just sent you a text or picture.
Tip 2
Multitask 3GS+

Tired of always having to close an app
before you can access another? Well,
no more!
Just double press the Home button
to bring up the multitasking bar. This
shows you the other apps you have
used. You can scroll left and right to see
even more.

Just tap on the app icon to quickly
switch between them.
Tip 3
iPod Control Everywhere 3GS+

You can control music on your iPhone
while surfing the web or using other
applications.

If music is playing through the iPod
app or any other app, double press
the Home button to bring up the
multitasking bar. Slide your finger to
the right across the bar, music controls
will appear.
Now you can quickly skip a song or
pause without exiting the app.
Tip 4
I’m Not Speaking to You
In a meeting when your phone rings?
Even on silent it might still be vibrating.
Tap one of the Volume buttons to
immediately silence your phone. It
will appear to continue ringing for
the caller. If you’d like to send a call
directly to voicemail, press the Sleep/
Wake button on the top right of the
phone twice.
You can also use the iPhone headset
by quickly pressing the microphone
button twice. Now you can ignore
people you don’t want to talk to
without letting your phone ring on
and on...
                Ssshh!
Tip 5
Tap to Scroll Sideways
See that line of dots and the spyglass
icon across the bottom of your
phone, indicating multiple pages
of applications and Spotlight? Most
people swipe to move left and right,
but you can also tap. This works
wherever you see the line of dots
including in, the Weather app and in
Safari.

      Tap anywhere along this line
Tip 6
Keep Neat and Tidy
You can move the icons around on your
phone and delete old Apps that you no
longer use.
Hold your finger on
one of the apps for
a couple of seconds
and they will all
start to shake.
You can now drag
them around to
rearrange. The little
x on the corner
o f d ow n l o a d e d
apps allows you to
delete them.
Tip 7
Folders iOS4
                                    3GS+

Filling up all 10 screens can happen
quickly but now you can create folders
to group apps together.
While organising icons, drag one app
on top of another. This creates a folder
which you can name so you know what
apps are in it.
Tip 8
Back to Square One
Once you’ve installed applications on
your phone, you can end up with many
pages of icons.
Pressing the Home button from any
screen takes you quickly to the first
page of icons. Why not rearrange your
icons so that all of your frequently used
apps are on the first page?
You can now launch any of your
favorite apps in one press of the Home
button and a tap! Handy as those four
icons in the dock are never enough...
Pressing Home again will swap
between Spotlight search and your
main home screen.
iOS4+3GS
                                      Tip 9
Rotation Lock 3GS+

You can now lock the screen in the
portrait orientation so it doesn’t
accidentally rotate when on a table or
you’re lying down.
Double tap the Home button to open
the multitasking bar and slide to the
right. Here you’ll find the rotation lock
button, tap this and the screen will lock.
Tip 10
Spotlight Search
Spotlight allows you to search your
phone for contacts, apps, music,
podcasts, video, audio-books, notes,
emails, calendar entries, and SMS
messages. It’s located to the left of
the home screen. Swipe right or tap
to access Spotlight.
Tip 11
Quick Dial and Launch
Finding contacts who are not in your
favorites list, or launching apps if
you’ve got a lot of them, is quicker with
Spotlight.
From the home screen press Home
again and type a few letters of a
contact’s name.
Tip 12
Rapid Web & Wiki Search 3GS+
                                     iOS4

Need some information quickly?
You can now search the web using
Spotlight.
In addition to offering search, Spotlight
now features an option to Search
Wikipedia or Search Web. Now you
have a world of information at your
fingerprints.
Tip 13
Hidden Search
In Notes, iPod, Mail, Contacts, and
Messages there is a hidden way to
search.
Scroll down to reveal a search bar at
the top of the page.
Now you can quickly search within that
app and find what you are looking for.
Tip 14
Hold to Quit the App 3GS+

Pressing Home no longer quits an app,
it takes you back to the home screen
but the app keeps running in the
background.
To close it fully, open the multitasking
bar by double pressing the Home
button. Then tap and hold on any icon
until a minus symbol appears. Tap this
to close the app.
Tip 15
Close the Folder iOS4
                                   3GS+

You don’t have to press the Home
button to close a folder.
Just tap any spare screen space either
above or below the folder icon. You
can also just tap the folder icon again
to close it.
Tip 16
Swipe to Delete
While viewing most lists there is a
hidden way to delete items. Simply
swipe across the email, notes, or SMS
conversations and a handy Delete
button appears. Sadly, this doesn’t work
for deleting individual text or MMS
messages...
Tip 17
Find Your Number
Open the Phone app and go to the
Contacts tab. Tap the status bar at the
top and it brings your phone number
down from the top of the list.
Now you can quickly read it out if you
ever need to.
Troubleshooting
What to do when things go wrong
Tip 18
Restarting Properly
A hard-reboot can be handy if an
application just refuses to start or, if
your phone has frozen.
Hold the Home button and the Sleep/
Wake button together for 10 seconds,
ignoring the
slide to power
off message
that appears,
and the phone
shuts down.
Now turn on
again normally.
Tip 19
Airplane Mode Shuffle
Sometimes it might look like there’s no
signal available on your phone when
you’re pretty certain there should be.
Simply turning your phone off and on
again can bring it back to life and get a
signal, but there’s an even quicker way.
Via Settings turn Airplane Mode on and
then off again. This restarts the mobile
network circuitry and often finds that
missing signal!
Tip 20
Ensure You’re Up-to-Date
Apple occasionally update the firmware
on the phone and each update usually
brings with it greater stability, better
reception, longer battery life and other
minor improvements.
S o, m a k e s u r e y o u a r e a l w a y s
up-to-date. Just plug your iPhone into
your PC or Mac and wait for iTunes to
start. It should prompt you when an
update is available.
Tip 21
Force Bad Apps to Quit
Sometimes applications freeze so it’s
useful to be able to terminate them.
Hold the Sleep/Wake button for 10
seconds, until the slide to power off
message appears and then release the
button. Now hold the Home button for
around six seconds. This tells the phone
to forcibly quit the current application
and returns you to the home screen.
If you’ve got an iPod Touch or iPhone
that hasn’t been upgraded to OS3.0 or
later, simply hold the Home button for
six seconds to quit an app.
Tip 22
Start All Over Again
Done something to seriously mess up
your phone?
You can reset your device to its last
backup.
Connect your iPhone to your computer
with the USB cable and wait for iTunes
to start. Click the iPhone icon and then
the Restore button to begin.
Safari Tips
Find information easily
Tip 23
Plain Lazy Web Surfing
If you’re heading for a .com domain
when typing an address in Safari, you
don’t have to type the www or the
.com. For example, you can type apple
in the address box in order to view
www.apple.com.
Tip 24
Look Before You Leap!
To see where a hyperlink will direct
you, simply hold your finger on it for
a second. A menu appears that lists
the actual address at the top and some
additional options. You can copy the
address to the clipboard and open the
link in a new page.
Tip 25
The Secret Behind .com
When typing an address in Safari,
that .com key hides some additional
features. If you hold your finger
on there for a second, a range of
alternatives appear. Simply slide your
finger to the one you want and release.
Tip 26
Save Safari Images
Images shown in the web browser can
be saved to your phone’s camera roll
or copied to the clipboard.
Hold your finger on the image for two
to three seconds. The remainder of
the page will fade, the image will be
highlighted, and options will slide up.
Tap Copy to place the image in the
clipboard or Save Image to save to your
camera roll.
You can then find the image in the
Photos app and set the picture as
wallpaper, send it via email, or apply it
to a contact.
Tip 27
Just the Right Size!
When browsing web pages in Safari,
you can double tap on a column, word,
or picture to fit its width to your screen.
Double tap again to zoom out.
Tip 28
Share Links with Friends
Stumbled across a web page you really
want to share? Simply tap the + (plus)
button at the bottom of the screen and
select Mail Link to this Page.
Tip 29
Create New App Icons
You can add a new app icon for any
website to your home screen. While
browsing in Safari, tap the + button
and then tap Add to Home Screen.
Some websites supply an icon, if not
then a screenshot of the current view
is used. Tapping this new icon launches
Safari and immediately takes you to
the website.
Tip 30
Start With A Blank Page
When yo u la unch Safari i t w il l
automatically load the last page
viewed, and on a slow connection this
can take precious time. However, you
can create an icon on your phone to
launch Safari with a blank page. Here’s
how:
1. Start Safari.
2. Tap the address
   bar and type
   about:blank and
   tap Go.
...Start with a Blank Cont.
3. Tap the + (plus) at the bottom and
   choose Add to Home Screen.
4. Type in a suitable name for this
   shortcut. This simple, bright white
page also makes a handy, free torch
   application.
Tip 31
Two-Fingered Scrolling
Some web pages contain scrolling
areas such as tex t boxes within
the page.
Safari hides the scroll bars for these
and of course scrolling with one finger
moves the entire page. The secret is to
use two fingers. By using two fingers
at once, you tell Safari to scroll the
element within the page rather than
the entire page.
Tip 32
AutoFill to Save Time
Your phone can remember the
usernames and passwords for sites you
visit, and it can autofill your details for
sites never visited before:

1. Create a contact for yourself.
2. Via Settings, Safari, AutoFill, enable
both options and set My Info to be
   yourself as a contact.
3. When you begin to enter details into
a new site, AutoFill is available above
   the keyboard.
Tip 33
Search on Page 3GS+
                                     iOS4.2
Using Safari, you can now search for
certain words on the page.
To do so, start typing in the search box
and at the bottom will be the option
On This Page. Scroll until Find “word”
is visible and tap this option. This will
then find the first instance of the word.
You can then press Next to advance to
the next instance of the word. This way
you can quickly go to the part of the
page you’re looking for.
Typing
Become a keyboard master
Tip 34
Hold Shift While Typing
Sometimes you just need the next few
letters to be capitalized, for example
when typing “My PC is BROKEN!” or
upper-case abbreviations such as
“LMAO.” The phone allows you to use
the Shift key just as on a computer;
simply hold it down with one finger
while you type with another.
Tip 35
Slide for Capitals
Entering all capitals by tapping shift
and then tapping the letter can take
a long time. To quickly enter a capital
just tap and hold the shift button. Now
drag your finger over to the letter you
want and let go.
This capitalizes only that letter and you
can carry on typing as normal. Great
for typing place names like New York
or London.
Tip 36
Slide to Punctuate
To quickly enter punctuation or
numbers while using the keyboard, tap
and hold the .?123 button and, keeping
your finger down, slide to any number
or punctuation button.
When you release your finger that one
character will be inserted and the usual
QWERTY keyboard will reappear.
You can use the same technique to
quickly insert single-digit numbers
into text.
Tip 37
Shake to Undo and Redo
When typing in any application, or
when using cut, copy, and paste,
you can shake the phone to undo
your typing. Shake again to redo.
Your phone will pop up a query to
double-check.
Tip 38
Double-Tap for Shift Lock
The title here says it all, but this feature
is disabled by default. To enable, tap
the Settings icon, then tap General and
Keyboard. Set Enable Caps Lock to on.
Now you can double tap the Shift key
to turn on caps lock. It will turn blue
when locked.
Tip 39
Hold Keys for Extras!
If you hold down a letter on the
keyboard, a pop-up appears
containing various accented versions
of the character. You can do the same
with certain punctuation characters to
reveal alternatives.
Tip 40
Alternative Currencies
One of the keyboard’s many secrets is
that it hides multiple currency symbols
for insertion into emails, notes, or SMS
messages. The default currency symbol
depends on your phone’s settings but
if you hold your finger on this you’ll
get the alternatives. You can combine
this with our previous tip to insert any
currency symbol with one lift of
the finger.
Tip 41
Get a Bigger Keyboard
Turning your phone sideways will
get you a bigger keyboard in all the
standard applications, including Notes,
Messages, Mail, and Safari. In Safari,
once you are editing the address the
orientation is locked, so turn your
phone sideways before tapping the
address bar.
Tip 42
Cut, Copy, and Paste
You can Cut, Copy, and Paste between
applications, including your photos,
webpages, notes, or SMS messages.
Highlight items and then wait for the
Copy button to appear.
It is even easier to copy and paste
between applications using multitasking.
Tip 43
Get a Magnifying Glass
Most apps provide a magnifying glass
for editing and selecting text, which is
handy for positioning the cursor in the
right place, or selecting a particular
word for copying.
Hold your finger over the text for a
second and a small magnifying glass
appears for precise control.
Tip 44
Add to the Dictionary
If you are writing something and the
iPhone flags a word as misspelled,
cancel the correction by tapping the
small x by the suggested correction
and the word will be put into the
iPhone’s dictionary.
If you use obscure words, acronyms, or
colorful language a lot this feature can
be a time-saver.
Sometimes you might need to make
the correction once for each different
application.
Tip 45
Spellcheck iOS4
                                     3GS+

When typing in many of the apps
including Messages or Notes, if a word
is misspelled, it will be underlined by a
red dotted line.
Tap on this to quickly see replacement
options, handy if you can’t quite
remember how to spell that word.
Double tapping on a word to select it,
the option to Replace... appears. Tap
this to see possible replacement words
and quickly correct the error.
Tip 46
Quickly Insert a Period
If you tap the Space key twice, the
iPhone will instead insert a period
(fullstop for those in the UK) and a
single space. You can also achieve the
same effect by tapping the Space key
with two fingers at the same time.
What if you actually want two spaces?
Simply tap once then wait for a couple
of seconds before tapping again.
Tip 47
Keyboard Layout iOS4
                                 3GS+

The iPhone now offers the facility of
changing your keyboard settings. Open
Settings, General, then Keyboard.
Select International Keyboards and
then choose which keyboard you want.
You can then select to have QWERTY,
AZERTY or QWERTZ.
If you connect an external keyboard
with a different layout, you can also
change this from the Hardware
Keyboard Layout section on the same
page. You can choose from options
such as Dvorak or U.S. Extended.
Tip 48
International Keyboard
Putting on international keyboards
gives you lots of new options such as
spellcheck in that language.
When you add different language
options to your keyboard a small globe
shows up next to the space bar.
In iOS 4, to quickly swap between
languages, tap and hold the globe icon
to see all your options and slide to the
one you want.
Tip 49
SMS Character Count iOS4
                                  3GS+

Always wondering how long your
messages are? You can turn on an SMS
character count to see.
Open Settings then Messages and turn
on Character Count. This is handy as
messages of more than 160 characters
long are billed as multiple texts. The
count appears after you have typed
one line.
Mail
Stay in touch
Tip 50
The Secret Behind the Dot
When typing an email address in the
Mail app, the . key hides additional
options. If you hold your finger on there
for a second, a range of useful shortcuts
appear. Simply slide your finger to the
one you want and release.
Tip 51
Unified Inbox 3GS+
                                iOS4

Mail now allows you to view multiple
email accounts simultaneously.
This means you don’t have to keep
swapping from inbox to inbox just to
see any email you have received.
Tip 52
Email Resizing iOS4
                                    3GS+

If you send an image in an email, it can
use up a lot of 3G data.
Mail now asks you what size you want
the image to be. The smaller option
will use up less data if you are on a 3G
connection and you want to save every
last bit of usage.
Tip 53
Email Threads 3GS+
                                     iOS4

Having a conversation with several
people through Mail, it can get
confusing. You can turn threads on so
that it is more like a real conversation.
Open Settings then Mail,Contacts,
Calendars. Here is the option Organize
By Thread. Just turn this on and
joint emails will stay connected with
multiple replies.
Tip 54
Open Attachments
When viewing an email with an
attachment you can open it with a
compatible app.
Tap and hold the attachment in the
email and you get the options to open
with an app.
For example if you have received a pdf
you can open it with iBooks and read
using that app. It won’t be copied to
your Library though and will remain in
the email.
Tip 55
Highlight and Reply
If you receive a long email and wish to
reply or forward a specific section, there
is no need to include the entire message.
If you highlight part of the message
before replying or forwarding, only that
selection will appear in the new email.
Battery Life
Go for longer between charges
Tip 56
Dim the Screen
Th e s c re e n i s o n e o f t h e m o s t
significant drains on the battery. You
can reduce the amount of battery
power the screen uses in two ways:

1. Reduce the brightness. Go into
   Settings, then Brightness and move
   the slider.
2. Reduce the Auto-Lock time. When
your phone auto-locks, it also blanks
the screen which saves power. Go
   into Settings, then General, then
   Auto-Lock to adjust this.
Tip 57
Turn Off Bluetooth
Bluetooth adds significant drain to
the battery, and if you are not using
a hands-free kit then you may as well
turn it off.
With Bluetooth enabled an icon appears
in the status bar. It’s quite hard to see
from the home screen but a lot easier
against the light status bar used by
most applications.
To turn off Bluetooth, tap Settings, then
General, then Bluetooth, and tap the
on/off switch.
Tip 58
Turn Off Push Email
Keeping push email turned off can save
quite a lot of juice, particularly in areas
with a poor signal.
Go to Settings,
Mail, Contacts,
Calendars, and
turn Push to off
a n d Fetch to
Manually.
Tip 59
Turn Off Automatic Wi-Fi
Stop your phone searching for
networks every time you use an
Internet application.
Go to Settings, select Wi-Fi, and simply
turn it off.
Tip 60
Disable 3G
Depending upon the availability of
transmitters nearby, maintaining a 3G
connection can use a lot of battery
power. If you switch 3G off, your phone
will be much slower at downloading
data, but the battery should last longer
and you can still make and receive calls.

To turn 3G off, tap Settings, then
General, then Network, and tap the
on/off switch next to Enable 3G.
Tip 61
Keep It Cool
The iPhone lasts longer when kept
between 0 º and 35 ºC (32 º to 95 ºF).
Outside of this range, battery life can
suffer.
Try not to leave your phone in a
glovebox or on a parcel-shelf in
summer.
Using a case that
d o e s n’ t g i v e y o u r
phone air can also lead
to decreased battery
life. If it gets really hot,
you’ll see a warning
message.
Tip 62
Turn Off EQ
Equalization enhances key frequencies
to suit certain types of music. It also
requires a lot of processing power, and
you can extend your battery life while
listening to music by turning it off:
On the iPhone, go into Settings, iPod,
 and set EQ to off.
On the iPod Touch, go into Settings,
Music, and set EQ to off.
If you’ve set EQ differently for specific
songs in iTunes, off won’t work so set
EQ to Flat instead.
Tip 63
Close Unused Applications
To ensure that your phone is using as
little battery as possible, you should
press the Home button before locking
so that no app remains running in the
foreground.
Applications that make heavy use of
GPS, such as Maps, or the 3G and Wi-Fi
connection, such as Safari can still run
in the background so make sure to
close them fully in the multitasking bar
also (see Tip 14.)
Tip 64
Save Power for Calls
Away from charge? If you need a
work ing phone for mak ing and
receiving calls, reduce your use of:
 Applications – particularly those that
use 3G data, GPS, or both, such as
 Maps.
Games – these can use a lot of power.
The iPod application – video in
particular uses a lot of power.
Tip 65
Save Power for iPod
If you want to conserve juice for use as
an iPod and you don’t need the phone
to be working, put it in Airplane Mode.

This will turn off all the power-hungry
features such as the 3G data, phone,
and Wi-Fi connections.
This will extend the time iPod will last.
Tip 66
Battery Life Percentage 3GS+

iPhone 3GS and 4 allow you to add a
percentage battery-life indicator to the
status bar.
This is enabled via Settings, General,
Usage.
Security
Keep your data safe
Tip 67
Parental Controls
Go in to Settings, General, Restrictions.
From here you can turn cer tain
functions on or off, such as iTunes store
or Installing Apps.
This can be handy if you are lending
your phone to someone and don’t want
them downloading loads of apps.
You can then go back in to Settings and
easily turn them on again. It can also
free up space on your home screen for
apps you use more often.
Tip 68
More Restrictions iOS4.2
                                  3GS+
You can also restrict the deleting of
apps from Restrictions. Turn on the
Deleting Apps option.
You can also stop changes to your
location details or Mail accounts by
turning on the options Location and
Accounts.
Finally you can stop any Game Center
Multiplayer Games and Adding
Friends. Again just turn these options
on.
Tip 69
Keep Your Data Secure
If your iPhone gets stolen, a stranger
will have access to your contacts,
appointments, emails, and photos.
Applications you’ve installed might
grant access to other personal data
such as your Facebook account.
Setting a passcode helps to protect
your privacy. Here’s how:
1. Tap Settings, then General, then
   Passcode Lock.
2. Enter a passcode that no one else
   can guess.
Tip 70
Alphanumeric Passcodes iOS4
                                  3GS+

If you want to make your phone even
more secure you can now set an
alphanumeric passcode. Open Settings,
General, then Passcode Lock. Here is
the option Simple Passcode which is
always 4 digits long.

Turn Simple Passcode to off and you
can use a passcode of any length,
comprising letters and numbers. This
will be more secure–as long as you
don’t make it something easy to guess.
Tip 71
Erase All Data
There is additional security for keeping
your data away from prying eyes
should your phone get stolen.
Turn on Erase All
Data.
Now, if someone
steals your phone
and tries to guess
your passcode, the
iPhone erases your
personal data after
10 unsuccessful
attempts.
Tip 72
Keep Your SIM Secure
Even with a passcode lock, thieves could
still take your SIM card, insert it into
another phone, and run up a huge bill.
Prevent this by enabling a SIM
card lock. In Settings, select Phone,
then SIM PIN.
When the phone is next switched on,
or if the SIM is removed and inserted
into another device, a passcode will be
required to activate it.
Some carriers have default pins which
you have to enter before being able
to change it. Contact your carrier to
find this out. If you don’t enter an
incorrect code three times it will lock
your phone.
Tip 73
Secret Caller
You can choose whether or not your
number shows when you call other
people.
Go into Settings, Phone, then Show
My Caller ID.
Then select on or off depending on
whether or not you want your number
to be seen.
Tip 74
Encrypt Your Backup
With iTunes 8.1 or higher, you can now
encrypt the backup file that contains
all of your phone’s data on your PC.
In iTunes you’ll see a new Encrypt
iPhone backup check box in the
Summary pane.
Tip 75
Enable Find My iPhone...
If you subscribe to MobileMe, you can
enable a feature called Find My iPhone.
To enable this, you need to sign up for
a MobileMe account at www.me.com
and then enable the feature.
iPhone 4, iPad, and
4th generation iPod
Touch users can
currently subscribe
to this for free by
downloading the
Find My iPhone App
from the App Store.
Tip 76
...Find Your iPhone
Once you’ve signed up, you can log in
to me.com to locate your phone on a
map. The Find My iPhone options are
tucked away under the account tab in
MobileMe.
Tip 77
Attract Attention
Once logged in at me.com, you can
send a message to your phone and get
it to play a persistent sound for two
minutes.
The sound plays
even if your
phone is set to
silent.
However, it does
play at the ringer
volume, which
makes it hard to
hear if it’s set low.
Tip 78
Remotely Lock Your Phone
If you decide your iPhone is missing
temporarily and you want to keep your
data safe, you can lock your phone
remotely via MobileMe. From www.
me.com select Remote Passcode Lock
and enter a new code to secure
your phone.
Tip 79
Remotely Wipe Your Data
MobileMe brings another level of data
security to your phone. If you decide it’s
been stolen, you can issue a command
to your phone to delete all your data
and reset it to factory defaults.
Once you’ve done this, your phone
will no longer be able to respond to
location requests, which is a pity as
you’ll need to decide between keeping
your data secure or giving the police
good information on its location.
Should you be reunited with your
phone, you can use iTunes to restore
the data from your last backup.
Media
Photos, camera, and music
Tip 80
AirPlay 3GS+
                                 iOS4.2
This allows you to wirelessly stream
your music or videos to any AirPlay
compatible speakers or Apple TV.
From the iPod or Videos app press the
AirPlay button and then choose the
device you want to play it through.
You can also choose AirPlay from the
multitasking bar if you swipe right
twice. This way you can quickly start
streaming media to devices around
your home.
Tip 81
AirPrint iOS4.2
                                   3GS+
You can wirelessly print from your
iPhone. It is currently only compatible
with AirPrint enabled printers.
You can print from Photos, Safari, or
Mail. Press the arrow icon and then
select Print. It will then show which
printer you want to print through
and you can then tap Print again to
begin printing.
Tip 82
Set Backgrounds 3GS+

You can now have a photo as your
home-screen background as well as
your lock screen.

Open Settings then Wallpaper. Here
you can see your current wallpaper.
Tap on this and you can choose from
the stock wallpaper or from your saved
photos or photo gallery.
Tip 83
Camera Focus
In the Camera app, you can tap the
screen on the part of the image
you want to focus on. This can be a
close-up item or one farther away.
The iPhone will automatically focus
to that point for a clearer picture or
video.
With iOS4 you also have a digital
zoom – drag the slider to zoom in.
Tip 84
Easier Listening
Three buttons appear when listening
to audio books, podcasts, or when
watching videocasts.

Email. Send a link to the current
 podcast via email.
Skip back. Jump back 30 seconds.
 Playback speed (not in videos).
Double or halve the playback speed.
Tip 85
Shake to Shuffle
While playing music, shaking your
phone shuffles to another track at
random.
Cleverly, the phone disables this
when listening to podcasts or audio
books. Shuffling works while the iPod
application is running or the mini
controls are displayed (see Tip 2) even
on the lock screen.
You can disable shuffle altogether
through Settings, iPod.
Tip 86
Add Playlist in iPod 3GS+
                                       iOS4

Using the iPod app you can quickly
create custom playlists.
Tap Playlists then Add Playlist.... Name
it and then add your choice of songs
to it.

This is great for creating a quick playlist
for a party or for playing your favorite
songs to friends.
Tip 87
Send Multiple Photos
Single photos can be sent at a reduced
resolution via MMS, email, or uploaded
to MobileMe.
You can also select
up to five to share
via email or copy
on to the clipboard,
but beyond that
the Share and
Copy buttons
become disabled.
Tip 88
GeoTagging 3GS+
                                     iOS4

When you take a photo, the iPhone
tags it with the location in which it was
taken.

In the Photos app you can now view
your photos by location. Just tap the
Places button and a map appears with
all your photos on. Now you can find
your holiday snaps without having to
search through all your photos.
Tip 89
Faces and Albums iOS4
                                  3GS+

If you have the iPhoto software with
your Mac computer, there are two new
view options with iOS 4.
Once your photos are synced, the
options Faces and Events will be in
the Photos app. (Faces only works with
iPhoto 2009 or later editions.)
Albums will also be synced so you can
view your photos by how you have
them organised in iPhoto.
Tip 90
Multitask Volume 3GS+
                                      iOS4.2
Yo u c a n q u i c k l y c h a n g e t h e
volume of your phone through the
multitasking bar.
Double press the Home button to
open the multitasking bar. Swipe
right once to see the iPod controls
and then swipe right again to reveal
the volume controls.
Microphone
Look, no hands!
Tip 91
About the Mic
The iPhone earbuds have a built-in
microphone you can use for hands-free
calling. The microphone is also a button
– squeeze it and you’ll hear a click!
This button provides quick access to a
variety of features, depending on what
is currently happening on the phone.
Tip 92
Controlling Calls
You can use the earbud button to
control the phone.
When your phone is ringing:
Click once to answer the call.
Press and hold for two seconds, then
release to reject the incoming call.
You’ll hear two soft beeps to confirm
  you’ve declined the call.
While on a call:
Click once to end the current call.
Tip 93
...Controlling Calls Cont.
If you are already on a call and another
call comes in:
Click once to switch to the new call.
Click again to switch between two
  active calls.
Press and hold for two seconds then
let go to switch to the new call and end
  the current call.
  Volume +/- buttons control the
volume of calls and audio playback
  with 3GS+.
Tip 94
Controlling Music Playback
You can also use the microphone
button to control playback when music
or videos are playing in the iPod app.
Click once to pause the current song
 or video.
 Click again to resume.
Quickly click twice to skip to the
 next song.
Quickly click three times to skip to
the previous song, or to restart the
current track if you are more than three
 seconds in.
Click and hold to activate voice control
 with 3GS+.
Tip 95
Voice Control 3GS+

This feature provides the ability to
control your iPhone through spoken
commands to make calls and
play music. To access press and
hold the Home button or middle
button on the earbuds for about 3
seconds and speak your command.
Yo u c a n e ve n a s k “ W hat t i m e i s
it?” to find out the current time.
Tip 96
Improve Voice Control 3GS+

Most phones contain some contacts
stored by their first name only.
You’ll find “Call Joanna Smith” works
a lot better than “Call Jo,” so expand
abbreviations and add last names
to your contacts. This significantly
improves the ability of Voice Control
to understand.
You can also add a Nickname via the
add field option in Contacts, or create
a new contact for the same person to
use as an alias.
Using the earbud mic also seems to
improve recognition.
Tip 97
Voice Memos
You can use the Voice Memos App
to c a p t u re m e m o s to yo u r s e l f,
meetings, or lectures and send them
via email or MMS.
Tip 98
Record and Play
While using the Voice Memos recorder
you can continue to use other
applications such as Mail and Safari.
Simply begin
recording as usual
and press Home
to exit the Voice
Memos application.
The status bar
will glow red
and recording
continues. Tap the
status bar to return
to Voice Memos.
Advanced
Getting the most out of your phone
Tip 99
Take a Screenshot
You can take a screenshot from
any iPhone application by
pressing the Home and Sleep/
Wake buttons together.
The screen will flash and the camera
sound will play. You can view them
via the Camera
Roll album
in the Photos
application.
This technique
is also useful for
grabbing still
images.
Tip 100
Point the Way
While in Maps you can quickly find your
current location.
Tap the icon in the bottom left and
the map zooms to where you are.
Pressing this again turns on the
compass so you can tell which direction
you’re facing. Great if you’re lost in an
unfamiliar place!
Tip 101
Zoom Out of Maps
Currently Maps is the only application
that supports this gesture, but if you
use two fingers to tap the map, it
zooms out.
For more precise control, pinch out
with your thumb and forefinger.
Tip 102
Forward and Delete SMS
You can Forward and Delete individual
messages, both standard text messages
and multimedia messages.
Open a message then tap the Edit
button, then tap the circles to the left
of each message to select them. Then
tap Forward or Delete.
Tip 103
Speedier Synchronization
When you connect your phone to your
Mac or PC, try to avoid plugging in via
a USB hub or any other devices such
as your keyboard. Going directly into
your computer can result in a speedier
sync with iTunes.
Some brands of PC make the matter
more complicated by having different
ports on the PC run at different speeds,
so it might be worth experimenting to
see if this applies to you.
Tip 104
Synchronize Notes
You can now synchronize your Notes
application data with your Mac or PC.
Configure this from iTunes.
Click the phone icon on the left
of iTunes, then click the Info tab.
S croll down to O ther and click
Sync notes with and choose your
favored application.
Tip 105
Surf While Talking
If you are connec ted to a Wi-Fi
network you can surf the web while
on a call, which could be just the
thing for conference calls when you’re
using speakerphone.
Just press Home when you are on the
call to go back to the home screen, and
then launch Safari. You’ll find the call
continues so you can surf as you talk.
Your phone is even smart enough to
disable the click sound as you type
when you are on the call.
Tip 106
A Scientific Calculator
The usual calculator provides
large, easy-to-use buttons for basic
arithmetic. If you tip the phone
sideways, this turns into a scientific
calculator. You can now perform more
complex calculations. You can also copy
and paste, and if you swipe across the
display it deletes the last number.
Tip 107
Download Wallpapers
You can download wallpapers from a
number of sites, including:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/
iphonewallpapers/
The easiest way to get them onto your
phone is to use mobile Safari to browse
the site. Navigate through flickr until a
suitable wallpaper is almost full-screen.
Tap and hold your finger on a picture
and select Save Image.
Find the image in the Camera Roll
album via the Photos application and
set it as your wallpaper by tapping the
icon in the bottom left and choosing
Use as Wallpaper.
Tip 108
Pause Downloads
Large applications or updates can
sometimes take a long time to
download over a data connection,
so you might want to pause them
w h i l e yo u c h e c k yo u r e m a i l o r
browse with Safari.
To pause the download simply tap the
icon. The progress bar will stop and
the word Paused appears beneath. To
continue the download, simply tap
the icon again.
Tip 109
Favorites Not Just for Calls
Favorites and Recents are great for
making quick calls and returning calls
to people who’ve phoned you.
But have you noticed the little blue
arrow on the
right-hand edge?
Tap here for options
to call that person
back on any of their
numbers, send
an email, or text,
or add them to
your Favorites list.
You can also send
contact details via
email or MMS.
Tip 110
Rapid Calendar Scrolling
In the Calendar application, tapping
the arrows to change months can
be tedious.
But did you know that if you hold your
finger on the arrows, your iPhone will
rapidly move through the months?
Handy for setting appointments way
ahead in the future...
Tip 111
Avoid SMS Embarrassment
Usually when a text message arrives
the iPhone displays it on the screen,
even if your phone is locked. To
disable this, set Text Preview to off
via Settings, Messaging.
Tip 112
Internet Tethering
You can use your phone’s data
connection to get your laptop online
from anywhere.
Availability and cost vary by region. You
can connect your laptop to your phone
via either Bluetooth or the USB cable.
To set this up open Settings, General,
and Network.
Here is the option Set Up Internet
Tethering. Tap this and you will be
taken to your carrier’s website where
you can follow setup instructions.
Tip 113
Accessibility
Open Settings, General, then
Accessibility for some of these features:
  A text-to-speech voice over feature,
which reads aloud the text of
  anything you tap.
Zooming – you can zoom into areas
  of the phone screen.
  White-on-black mode. Colors are
  reversed on the phone.
iOS 4 also adds larger text for
  Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes
to make them easier to read.
Tip 114
Cellular Data On/Off
You can turn off the phone connection
if you don’t want it being used.
Open Settings, General, Network, and
turn Cellular Data on or off. This can
be handy when you don’t want data
to be received over the normal
phone networks.
Tip 115
Reduce Roaming Charges
3G use overseas can be an expensive
luxury. Here are a few suggestions on
being cost-effective with your phone
when abroad.
1. Reset the usage statistics when you
   arrive overseas and monitor your
   data usage.
2. Turn off push email to avoid using 3G
and instead use Wi-Fi when available
to check email or browse the web.
3. Turn off data roaming. Go into
   Settings, tap General, then Network
   and turn off Data Roaming.
Tip 116
Location Service On/Off 3GS+
                                      iOS4

Some apps request the use of your
current location, such as Maps or
Camera. You can turn off these services
through Settings, General, then
Location Services.
You can also see which apps have used
your current location within the last
hour as a small arrow appears next to
that app.
If an open app is using your location, the
small arrow is shown in the status bar.
Tip 117
Accounts for Notes iOS4
                                   3GS+

From the Notes screen you can now
access Accounts. Just press the button
in the top left.

Here you can see your registered
accounts and choose to make a note
in each one. This can be an easy way to
separate notes about work from notes
about home.
Tip 118
Numbers on Folders 3GS+
                                      iOS4

If you have an app in a folder that has
received a notification it will show a
number on the top right corner.
Now you k now that something
interesting is waiting for your attention.
Tip 119
Bluetooth Connect
You can use Bluetooth to connect to
headphones or a headset. Perfect for
handsfree while driving.
You can also use the Bluetooth to
connect to a Bluetooth-enabled stereo,
such as in many cars, to play your music
without the need for wires.
Tip 120
Bluetooth Keyboard 3GS+
                                    iOS4
With iOS 4, you can use a Bluetooth
keyboard, if you find it hard to type
using the onscreen keyboard.
To pair the devices open Settings,
General, and Bluetooth. Turn it on and
then choose your Bluetooth keyboard.
You can also use the media control keys
to control the playback of music as well
as the brightness controls.
Shortcuts for copy (cmd+C or ctrl+C)
and paste (cmd+V or ctrl+V ) also
work so you don’t have to keep
tapping the screen.
Tip 121
Birthdays! iOS4
                                   3GS+

Always forgetting that
i m p or tant bir thday?
Now you can let your Calendar app
remind you. First off make sure you
have saved your friend’s birthday in
their contacts information. Now open
Calendar and tap Calendars in the top
left. Here is the option for Birthdays,
which you can tap to turn on or off.
Tip 122
Where’s Hold?
With the iPhone 4, while making a call
the Hold button has been replaced by
a FaceTime button. You can still place
a call on hold though.
To do so, tap and hold the Mute
button for a few seconds and it turns
in to Hold.
To resume the call just tap the Hold
button again and you can return to
the call.
Tip 123
Change the Search Results
Spotlight search can help you quickly
find what you are looking for. You
can edit the search results so they
only include certain sections, such as
Contacts or Calendar. You can also edit
the order they appear in the search.

Go to Settings, General, Home, and
then tap Search Results. Here tap a
section to select or de-select it. Finally
tap and drag on the three lines to the
right of every section, and you can
move it up or down to change the
order of the search results.
Tip 124
Use the Light
With the iPhone 4, the built-in LED flash
can be used as a torch.
Open the Camera app and switch to
video mode by sliding the button in
the bottom right corner.
Then turn flash to on from the top
left corner. Now you have a personal
flashlight, handy for all those times
when looking for things in the dark.
Tip 125
Contacts Text Tone iOS4.2
                                  iOS4
                                  3GS+

You can set individual text tones
for each contact so you can know if
someone important has sent you a
text message.
From Contacts, go to the contact entry
you want and tap Edit. Now scroll down
to the ringtone and text tone section.
Tap on Default next to text tone and
tap on your new choice. Then tap Done
and that contact will now have an
individual text tone.
Have You Noticed?
  Neat little touches
Tip 126
Automatic Pause
This has been an iPod feature for a
while, but it’s worth mentioning. If you
are listening to music on headphones,
and you pull them out of the phone,
playback is automatically paused.
Tip 127
Updating Calendar Icon
Far from being a static image to launch
the calendar, the icon actually updates
to show the current day and date.
Glancing at the home screen is a great
way of finding out the date without
having to look at a calendar.

               Genius!
Tip 128
Automatic Recognition
In the Mail and Notes applications,
your phone will underline anything
that looks like an address or
telephone number.
Tapping a phone number dials it
and by tapping an address you can
view that address directly in the
Maps application...
Tip 129
Stop Speaker Interference
When you dock your phone into
speakers that don’t specifically support
the iPhone, the phone detects this
and advises that you may experience
interference. To stop any possible
interference turn on Airplane Mode.
Tip 130
Landscape Mode
Landscape mode can be used in many
of the included apps. Just turn your
phone sideways to activate.
Tip 131
Use the Front Camera
With iPhone 4 you now have a front
facing camera. With this you can
quickly check how you’re looking if
you’re not near a mirror.
Open the Camera app and tap the
flip icon in the top right corner. This
changes to the front facing camera and
you’re now looking at yourself.
This could come in handy while
waiting for an interview, or if you’re
about to go on a date to make sure
you look just perfect.
Be Generous
Make someone’s day
Tip 132
Gift an App from iPhone 3GS+
                                       iOS4
You can gift an app directly from the
App Store on the iPhone.

1. Open the App Store and tap Search.
2. Search for tips & tricks. It should show
up automatically as tips & tricks -
iphone secrets. Tap this to be taken
   to the app page.
3. On the app page, scroll down to
below the screenshots of the app.
Tap G if t This App and follow
   the instructions.
Tip 133
Gift an App from iTunes
Did you know that you can gift this app
to other people? You’ll need to open
up iTunes on your PC or Mac and then:
1. Find our app in the iTunes store
   by searching for iPhone Secrets.
Look for the man’s head with the
   lightbulb in it!
2. On the product page, click the little
down arrow next to the price.
3. Choose Gift This App and follow the
   onscreen instructions.
Thank You!
We hope you’ve picked up some tips
that will help you use your phone more
effectively.

  • 2.
  • 3. Welcome Thanks for purchasing Tips & Tricks – iPhone Secrets. Here’s how to control the guide:
  • 4. About this Edition Some tips don’t apply if you have a device that hasn’t been upgraded to iOS 4 and some only apply to the 3GS and later iPhones. The following symbols appear throughout: iOS4 Only works with iOS 4+ iOS4.2 Only works with iOS4.2 Only works with 3GS and 3GS+ later iPhones with iOS4+ To tell which version your device is running, go into Settings, then General, then About. Look for Version to tell which OS you are on.
  • 6. Tip 1 The Fast Way to the Top! Reading a web page, email, or SMS text message? In all of these applications, tap anywhere on the status bar at the top to quickly scroll to the top of that page. This is especially handy in the Messaging application if you want to call the person who has just sent you a text or picture.
  • 7. Tip 2 Multitask 3GS+ Tired of always having to close an app before you can access another? Well, no more! Just double press the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar. This shows you the other apps you have used. You can scroll left and right to see even more. Just tap on the app icon to quickly switch between them.
  • 8. Tip 3 iPod Control Everywhere 3GS+ You can control music on your iPhone while surfing the web or using other applications. If music is playing through the iPod app or any other app, double press the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar. Slide your finger to the right across the bar, music controls will appear. Now you can quickly skip a song or pause without exiting the app.
  • 9. Tip 4 I’m Not Speaking to You In a meeting when your phone rings? Even on silent it might still be vibrating. Tap one of the Volume buttons to immediately silence your phone. It will appear to continue ringing for the caller. If you’d like to send a call directly to voicemail, press the Sleep/ Wake button on the top right of the phone twice. You can also use the iPhone headset by quickly pressing the microphone button twice. Now you can ignore people you don’t want to talk to without letting your phone ring on and on... Ssshh!
  • 10. Tip 5 Tap to Scroll Sideways See that line of dots and the spyglass icon across the bottom of your phone, indicating multiple pages of applications and Spotlight? Most people swipe to move left and right, but you can also tap. This works wherever you see the line of dots including in, the Weather app and in Safari. Tap anywhere along this line
  • 11. Tip 6 Keep Neat and Tidy You can move the icons around on your phone and delete old Apps that you no longer use. Hold your finger on one of the apps for a couple of seconds and they will all start to shake. You can now drag them around to rearrange. The little x on the corner o f d ow n l o a d e d apps allows you to delete them.
  • 12. Tip 7 Folders iOS4 3GS+ Filling up all 10 screens can happen quickly but now you can create folders to group apps together. While organising icons, drag one app on top of another. This creates a folder which you can name so you know what apps are in it.
  • 13. Tip 8 Back to Square One Once you’ve installed applications on your phone, you can end up with many pages of icons. Pressing the Home button from any screen takes you quickly to the first page of icons. Why not rearrange your icons so that all of your frequently used apps are on the first page? You can now launch any of your favorite apps in one press of the Home button and a tap! Handy as those four icons in the dock are never enough... Pressing Home again will swap between Spotlight search and your main home screen.
  • 14. iOS4+3GS Tip 9 Rotation Lock 3GS+ You can now lock the screen in the portrait orientation so it doesn’t accidentally rotate when on a table or you’re lying down. Double tap the Home button to open the multitasking bar and slide to the right. Here you’ll find the rotation lock button, tap this and the screen will lock.
  • 15. Tip 10 Spotlight Search Spotlight allows you to search your phone for contacts, apps, music, podcasts, video, audio-books, notes, emails, calendar entries, and SMS messages. It’s located to the left of the home screen. Swipe right or tap to access Spotlight.
  • 16. Tip 11 Quick Dial and Launch Finding contacts who are not in your favorites list, or launching apps if you’ve got a lot of them, is quicker with Spotlight. From the home screen press Home again and type a few letters of a contact’s name.
  • 17. Tip 12 Rapid Web & Wiki Search 3GS+ iOS4 Need some information quickly? You can now search the web using Spotlight. In addition to offering search, Spotlight now features an option to Search Wikipedia or Search Web. Now you have a world of information at your fingerprints.
  • 18. Tip 13 Hidden Search In Notes, iPod, Mail, Contacts, and Messages there is a hidden way to search. Scroll down to reveal a search bar at the top of the page. Now you can quickly search within that app and find what you are looking for.
  • 19. Tip 14 Hold to Quit the App 3GS+ Pressing Home no longer quits an app, it takes you back to the home screen but the app keeps running in the background. To close it fully, open the multitasking bar by double pressing the Home button. Then tap and hold on any icon until a minus symbol appears. Tap this to close the app.
  • 20. Tip 15 Close the Folder iOS4 3GS+ You don’t have to press the Home button to close a folder. Just tap any spare screen space either above or below the folder icon. You can also just tap the folder icon again to close it.
  • 21. Tip 16 Swipe to Delete While viewing most lists there is a hidden way to delete items. Simply swipe across the email, notes, or SMS conversations and a handy Delete button appears. Sadly, this doesn’t work for deleting individual text or MMS messages...
  • 22. Tip 17 Find Your Number Open the Phone app and go to the Contacts tab. Tap the status bar at the top and it brings your phone number down from the top of the list. Now you can quickly read it out if you ever need to.
  • 23. Troubleshooting What to do when things go wrong
  • 24. Tip 18 Restarting Properly A hard-reboot can be handy if an application just refuses to start or, if your phone has frozen. Hold the Home button and the Sleep/ Wake button together for 10 seconds, ignoring the slide to power off message that appears, and the phone shuts down. Now turn on again normally.
  • 25. Tip 19 Airplane Mode Shuffle Sometimes it might look like there’s no signal available on your phone when you’re pretty certain there should be. Simply turning your phone off and on again can bring it back to life and get a signal, but there’s an even quicker way. Via Settings turn Airplane Mode on and then off again. This restarts the mobile network circuitry and often finds that missing signal!
  • 26. Tip 20 Ensure You’re Up-to-Date Apple occasionally update the firmware on the phone and each update usually brings with it greater stability, better reception, longer battery life and other minor improvements. S o, m a k e s u r e y o u a r e a l w a y s up-to-date. Just plug your iPhone into your PC or Mac and wait for iTunes to start. It should prompt you when an update is available.
  • 27. Tip 21 Force Bad Apps to Quit Sometimes applications freeze so it’s useful to be able to terminate them. Hold the Sleep/Wake button for 10 seconds, until the slide to power off message appears and then release the button. Now hold the Home button for around six seconds. This tells the phone to forcibly quit the current application and returns you to the home screen. If you’ve got an iPod Touch or iPhone that hasn’t been upgraded to OS3.0 or later, simply hold the Home button for six seconds to quit an app.
  • 28. Tip 22 Start All Over Again Done something to seriously mess up your phone? You can reset your device to its last backup. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable and wait for iTunes to start. Click the iPhone icon and then the Restore button to begin.
  • 30. Tip 23 Plain Lazy Web Surfing If you’re heading for a .com domain when typing an address in Safari, you don’t have to type the www or the .com. For example, you can type apple in the address box in order to view www.apple.com.
  • 31. Tip 24 Look Before You Leap! To see where a hyperlink will direct you, simply hold your finger on it for a second. A menu appears that lists the actual address at the top and some additional options. You can copy the address to the clipboard and open the link in a new page.
  • 32. Tip 25 The Secret Behind .com When typing an address in Safari, that .com key hides some additional features. If you hold your finger on there for a second, a range of alternatives appear. Simply slide your finger to the one you want and release.
  • 33. Tip 26 Save Safari Images Images shown in the web browser can be saved to your phone’s camera roll or copied to the clipboard. Hold your finger on the image for two to three seconds. The remainder of the page will fade, the image will be highlighted, and options will slide up. Tap Copy to place the image in the clipboard or Save Image to save to your camera roll. You can then find the image in the Photos app and set the picture as wallpaper, send it via email, or apply it to a contact.
  • 34. Tip 27 Just the Right Size! When browsing web pages in Safari, you can double tap on a column, word, or picture to fit its width to your screen. Double tap again to zoom out.
  • 35. Tip 28 Share Links with Friends Stumbled across a web page you really want to share? Simply tap the + (plus) button at the bottom of the screen and select Mail Link to this Page.
  • 36. Tip 29 Create New App Icons You can add a new app icon for any website to your home screen. While browsing in Safari, tap the + button and then tap Add to Home Screen. Some websites supply an icon, if not then a screenshot of the current view is used. Tapping this new icon launches Safari and immediately takes you to the website.
  • 37. Tip 30 Start With A Blank Page When yo u la unch Safari i t w il l automatically load the last page viewed, and on a slow connection this can take precious time. However, you can create an icon on your phone to launch Safari with a blank page. Here’s how: 1. Start Safari. 2. Tap the address bar and type about:blank and tap Go.
  • 38. ...Start with a Blank Cont. 3. Tap the + (plus) at the bottom and choose Add to Home Screen. 4. Type in a suitable name for this shortcut. This simple, bright white page also makes a handy, free torch application.
  • 39. Tip 31 Two-Fingered Scrolling Some web pages contain scrolling areas such as tex t boxes within the page. Safari hides the scroll bars for these and of course scrolling with one finger moves the entire page. The secret is to use two fingers. By using two fingers at once, you tell Safari to scroll the element within the page rather than the entire page.
  • 40. Tip 32 AutoFill to Save Time Your phone can remember the usernames and passwords for sites you visit, and it can autofill your details for sites never visited before: 1. Create a contact for yourself. 2. Via Settings, Safari, AutoFill, enable both options and set My Info to be yourself as a contact. 3. When you begin to enter details into a new site, AutoFill is available above the keyboard.
  • 41. Tip 33 Search on Page 3GS+ iOS4.2 Using Safari, you can now search for certain words on the page. To do so, start typing in the search box and at the bottom will be the option On This Page. Scroll until Find “word” is visible and tap this option. This will then find the first instance of the word. You can then press Next to advance to the next instance of the word. This way you can quickly go to the part of the page you’re looking for.
  • 43. Tip 34 Hold Shift While Typing Sometimes you just need the next few letters to be capitalized, for example when typing “My PC is BROKEN!” or upper-case abbreviations such as “LMAO.” The phone allows you to use the Shift key just as on a computer; simply hold it down with one finger while you type with another.
  • 44. Tip 35 Slide for Capitals Entering all capitals by tapping shift and then tapping the letter can take a long time. To quickly enter a capital just tap and hold the shift button. Now drag your finger over to the letter you want and let go. This capitalizes only that letter and you can carry on typing as normal. Great for typing place names like New York or London.
  • 45. Tip 36 Slide to Punctuate To quickly enter punctuation or numbers while using the keyboard, tap and hold the .?123 button and, keeping your finger down, slide to any number or punctuation button. When you release your finger that one character will be inserted and the usual QWERTY keyboard will reappear. You can use the same technique to quickly insert single-digit numbers into text.
  • 46. Tip 37 Shake to Undo and Redo When typing in any application, or when using cut, copy, and paste, you can shake the phone to undo your typing. Shake again to redo. Your phone will pop up a query to double-check.
  • 47. Tip 38 Double-Tap for Shift Lock The title here says it all, but this feature is disabled by default. To enable, tap the Settings icon, then tap General and Keyboard. Set Enable Caps Lock to on. Now you can double tap the Shift key to turn on caps lock. It will turn blue when locked.
  • 48. Tip 39 Hold Keys for Extras! If you hold down a letter on the keyboard, a pop-up appears containing various accented versions of the character. You can do the same with certain punctuation characters to reveal alternatives.
  • 49. Tip 40 Alternative Currencies One of the keyboard’s many secrets is that it hides multiple currency symbols for insertion into emails, notes, or SMS messages. The default currency symbol depends on your phone’s settings but if you hold your finger on this you’ll get the alternatives. You can combine this with our previous tip to insert any currency symbol with one lift of the finger.
  • 50. Tip 41 Get a Bigger Keyboard Turning your phone sideways will get you a bigger keyboard in all the standard applications, including Notes, Messages, Mail, and Safari. In Safari, once you are editing the address the orientation is locked, so turn your phone sideways before tapping the address bar.
  • 51. Tip 42 Cut, Copy, and Paste You can Cut, Copy, and Paste between applications, including your photos, webpages, notes, or SMS messages. Highlight items and then wait for the Copy button to appear. It is even easier to copy and paste between applications using multitasking.
  • 52. Tip 43 Get a Magnifying Glass Most apps provide a magnifying glass for editing and selecting text, which is handy for positioning the cursor in the right place, or selecting a particular word for copying. Hold your finger over the text for a second and a small magnifying glass appears for precise control.
  • 53. Tip 44 Add to the Dictionary If you are writing something and the iPhone flags a word as misspelled, cancel the correction by tapping the small x by the suggested correction and the word will be put into the iPhone’s dictionary. If you use obscure words, acronyms, or colorful language a lot this feature can be a time-saver. Sometimes you might need to make the correction once for each different application.
  • 54. Tip 45 Spellcheck iOS4 3GS+ When typing in many of the apps including Messages or Notes, if a word is misspelled, it will be underlined by a red dotted line. Tap on this to quickly see replacement options, handy if you can’t quite remember how to spell that word. Double tapping on a word to select it, the option to Replace... appears. Tap this to see possible replacement words and quickly correct the error.
  • 55. Tip 46 Quickly Insert a Period If you tap the Space key twice, the iPhone will instead insert a period (fullstop for those in the UK) and a single space. You can also achieve the same effect by tapping the Space key with two fingers at the same time. What if you actually want two spaces? Simply tap once then wait for a couple of seconds before tapping again.
  • 56. Tip 47 Keyboard Layout iOS4 3GS+ The iPhone now offers the facility of changing your keyboard settings. Open Settings, General, then Keyboard. Select International Keyboards and then choose which keyboard you want. You can then select to have QWERTY, AZERTY or QWERTZ. If you connect an external keyboard with a different layout, you can also change this from the Hardware Keyboard Layout section on the same page. You can choose from options such as Dvorak or U.S. Extended.
  • 57. Tip 48 International Keyboard Putting on international keyboards gives you lots of new options such as spellcheck in that language. When you add different language options to your keyboard a small globe shows up next to the space bar. In iOS 4, to quickly swap between languages, tap and hold the globe icon to see all your options and slide to the one you want.
  • 58. Tip 49 SMS Character Count iOS4 3GS+ Always wondering how long your messages are? You can turn on an SMS character count to see. Open Settings then Messages and turn on Character Count. This is handy as messages of more than 160 characters long are billed as multiple texts. The count appears after you have typed one line.
  • 60. Tip 50 The Secret Behind the Dot When typing an email address in the Mail app, the . key hides additional options. If you hold your finger on there for a second, a range of useful shortcuts appear. Simply slide your finger to the one you want and release.
  • 61. Tip 51 Unified Inbox 3GS+ iOS4 Mail now allows you to view multiple email accounts simultaneously. This means you don’t have to keep swapping from inbox to inbox just to see any email you have received.
  • 62. Tip 52 Email Resizing iOS4 3GS+ If you send an image in an email, it can use up a lot of 3G data. Mail now asks you what size you want the image to be. The smaller option will use up less data if you are on a 3G connection and you want to save every last bit of usage.
  • 63. Tip 53 Email Threads 3GS+ iOS4 Having a conversation with several people through Mail, it can get confusing. You can turn threads on so that it is more like a real conversation. Open Settings then Mail,Contacts, Calendars. Here is the option Organize By Thread. Just turn this on and joint emails will stay connected with multiple replies.
  • 64. Tip 54 Open Attachments When viewing an email with an attachment you can open it with a compatible app. Tap and hold the attachment in the email and you get the options to open with an app. For example if you have received a pdf you can open it with iBooks and read using that app. It won’t be copied to your Library though and will remain in the email.
  • 65. Tip 55 Highlight and Reply If you receive a long email and wish to reply or forward a specific section, there is no need to include the entire message. If you highlight part of the message before replying or forwarding, only that selection will appear in the new email.
  • 66. Battery Life Go for longer between charges
  • 67. Tip 56 Dim the Screen Th e s c re e n i s o n e o f t h e m o s t significant drains on the battery. You can reduce the amount of battery power the screen uses in two ways: 1. Reduce the brightness. Go into Settings, then Brightness and move the slider. 2. Reduce the Auto-Lock time. When your phone auto-locks, it also blanks the screen which saves power. Go into Settings, then General, then Auto-Lock to adjust this.
  • 68. Tip 57 Turn Off Bluetooth Bluetooth adds significant drain to the battery, and if you are not using a hands-free kit then you may as well turn it off. With Bluetooth enabled an icon appears in the status bar. It’s quite hard to see from the home screen but a lot easier against the light status bar used by most applications. To turn off Bluetooth, tap Settings, then General, then Bluetooth, and tap the on/off switch.
  • 69. Tip 58 Turn Off Push Email Keeping push email turned off can save quite a lot of juice, particularly in areas with a poor signal. Go to Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and turn Push to off a n d Fetch to Manually.
  • 70. Tip 59 Turn Off Automatic Wi-Fi Stop your phone searching for networks every time you use an Internet application. Go to Settings, select Wi-Fi, and simply turn it off.
  • 71. Tip 60 Disable 3G Depending upon the availability of transmitters nearby, maintaining a 3G connection can use a lot of battery power. If you switch 3G off, your phone will be much slower at downloading data, but the battery should last longer and you can still make and receive calls. To turn 3G off, tap Settings, then General, then Network, and tap the on/off switch next to Enable 3G.
  • 72. Tip 61 Keep It Cool The iPhone lasts longer when kept between 0 º and 35 ºC (32 º to 95 ºF). Outside of this range, battery life can suffer. Try not to leave your phone in a glovebox or on a parcel-shelf in summer. Using a case that d o e s n’ t g i v e y o u r phone air can also lead to decreased battery life. If it gets really hot, you’ll see a warning message.
  • 73. Tip 62 Turn Off EQ Equalization enhances key frequencies to suit certain types of music. It also requires a lot of processing power, and you can extend your battery life while listening to music by turning it off: On the iPhone, go into Settings, iPod, and set EQ to off. In Settings, select Phone, then SIM PIN. When the phone is next switched on, or if the SIM is removed and inserted into another device, a passcode will be required to activate it. Once you’ve done this, your phone will no longer be able to respond to location requests, which is a pity as you’ll need to decide between keeping your data secure or giving the police good information on its location. Should you be reunited with your phone, you can use iTunes to restore the data from your last backup.
