Slides for a talk at Bett 2015, London, on Friday 23 January at Excel. Learning analytics has great potential. By using data more effectively, we can understand and improve learning and the learning environment. Trail-blazing projects, exciting demonstrations and earnest strategy papers set out a compelling vision for data in HE. That vision can sometimes seem far from institutional reality. How can we get some of those benefits for our learners? This interactive workshop will help participants assess their institution’s current capability for making use of learning analytics, and help them plan for action. The facilitators will draw on a wide range of practical experience, including from the pan-European Learning Analytics Community Exchange project.

Session description: The theory and practice of Digital Asset Management can serve as a lens through which the transformation of long-held business practices may be viewed. In this provocative session, Douglas Hegley will combine concepts from Clayton Christensen’s book The Innovator’s Dilemma with best practices in DAMs to demonstrate how the power of systems thinking can drive positive disruption. Such disruptive changes are necessitated by the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world in which we live. To succeed in that world, businesses need to rely on people - knowledge workers - who can combine agility with disciplined methodology. To do so, it is necessary to re-imagine organizational structures, unleash individual talent, enable teams to self-organize, and evolve leadership models. In essence, it is people who are our greatest assets, because they are at the very core of every aspect of modern business. As any DAMs Manager knows: when important assets are hidden away and difficult to use, their inherent value is lost - but when those assets are clearly identified, easy to find and utilized effectively, innovation and success will follow.

The world moves at a rapid pace, and your organization must be able to respond to changing conditions. Your DW/BI team is being asked to help end users answer new questions to gain new insights at an increasing pace. They need to become agile, but are struggling to do so. This presentation addresses a series of difficult questions that DW/BI must have answers to if they are to learn how to work in a work in an agile manner: • How can we proceed without modeling everything up front? • What can we do when our users can’t tell us what data they need? • How can we easily respond to changing requirements? • How do we implement “vertical slices” of value? • It takes weeks to analyze a legacy data source, how does that fit into a two-week sprint? • How can we realistically deal with the quality problems of all the data sources that we work with, and usually aren’t responsible for? • Our end users want updates in hours or days, how do we do that in two-week sprints? • Is it realistic to evolve production data sources? • How can we deliver new changes quickly into production? • And more. Organizations around the world have successfully adopted agile and lean ways of working (WoW) on the DW/BI teams. You can too. Scott Ambler is available to present this to your organization.

As machine learning has become more widely adopted across many industries and involved in many aspects of decision making, machine learning interpretability is therefore becoming an integral part of the data scientist workflow and can no longer just be an afterthought. Ultimately, it’s reasonable to wonder whether we can understand and trust decisions made by a predictive model. However, in an increasingly competitive environment, data scientists are using ever-complex machine learning algorithms like XGBoost or Deep Learning to deliver more accurate models to businesses. Unfortunately, there is a fundamental tension between accuracy and interpretability: the most accurate models are often the hardest to understand. Opaque and complicated nonlinear models limit trust and transparency, slowing adoption of machine learning models in high regulated industries like banking, healthcare and insurance. But things needn't be that way! In this talk, Leonardo Noleto, senior data scientist at Bleckwen, will explore the vibrant area of machine learning interpretability and explain how to understand the inner-workings of black-box models, thanks to interpretability techniques. Along the way, Leonardo offers an overview of interpretability and the trade-offs among various approaches of making machine learning models interpretable. Leonardo concludes with a demonstration of open source tools like LIME and SHAP.

For online businesses, recommender systems are paramount. There is an increasing need to take into account all the user information to tailor the best product offer, tailored to each new user. Part of that information is the content that the user actually sees: the visuals of the products. When it comes to products like luxury hotels, pictures of the room, the building or even the nearby beach can significantly impact users’ decision. In this talk, we will describe how we improved an online vacation retailer recommender system by using the information in images. We’ll explain how to leverage open data and pre-trained deep learning models to derive information on user taste. We will use a transfer learning approach that enables companies to use state of the art machine learning methods without needing deep learning expertise.
