faster transportation to move our physical selves. We have
effectively shortened that distance by 70 times. But we can do
better, how?

when did this start?


Log of the ﬁrst message sent via ARPANET. On October 29, 1969.
Started in the 50‘s by the government for internal communications.
The ﬁrst mobile phone’s were launched in 1956. They were 90 lbs.


40 years ago. In 1971 the ﬁrst email was sent by these two computers sitting side by side connected
through ARPANET. First email was printed on machine in the foreground (on the left) and typed and sent

when I was 1. $4,500 today’s dollars. This was the beginning of
portable computing as we know it.


This was pretty much our exact computer setup when I was 4.


when i was 6. w/ huge 1.44 MB high density version, I could ﬁt what
I now keep on one hard drive on a mere 2 million of these.


when i was 11, world’s ﬁrst web server. Also, cell phones go digital.


end of 1991, Al Gore created and introduced a bill to produce what
would later be known as the “information super highway” based on a
report submitted to congress from 1988.

ﬁrst came about when i was about 8, but I started using it when i was about 16 until i was 22
*emotion in text. *no boundaries *no preconceived notions *appreciate people for who they are

when I was 22, friendster is launched, pioneering the online connection of real-world friends.
Its user base grew to three million users in the ﬁrst three months.

when I was 23 myspace is launched, ﬁrst conceived as a friendster clone, the ﬁrst version was coded in 10 days.

when I was 24 facebook is launched. Two years later it became open to the public. Right now facebook has 600
million users. That’s approx. double the population of the US.

by 2007, the user base of the internet had grown dramatically. as of
last year, approx 80% of the US is an internet user.

9.57 zettabytes consumed in 2008. iphone was a year old. Don’t worry, there’s still yottabytes.
Not an addiction, we need to create a healthy diet by curating the information and how it is processed to us.

When I was 13 MP3’s hit the scene. I still have CD’s, Tapes and
Vinyl... Somewhere.


when I was about 19 photography went mainstream digital. ﬂickr has taken the art
exhibit online. there are literally billions of pictures. about 5,000 uploads every
minute. My stream = 75,000 views over the past ﬁve years. I don’t have albums, my
favorite art streams to my TV while I’m listening to music, all over the internet.


when I was 27, kindle launched. now it’s in third version, has 850,000 books instantly
available. I now own less than 20 books. Has also allowed for self publication.


In ’08 netﬂix started offering online streaming. Since then, I now
have less than 15 ﬁlms on DVD and do not have cable or satellite.
