Breakthrough for Surrey’s life-saving cancer test
• Tuesday 04 Mar 2014
• The University of Surrey has signed a licence deal
to develop and market a groundbreaking new test
that detects prostate and bladder cancers.
• The test offers a more reliable way of discovering
these cancers earlier, by testing a small urine
sample for the EN2 protein which bladder and
prostate cancers produce.
• Hardev Pandha, Professor of Medical Oncology, is
part of the team working on the project with Dr
Richard Morgan, Senior Lecturer in Molecular
Oncology. He said, "We are looking forward to
working with Randox on this product. This new
test could lead to a faster cancer detection that
could save hundreds of lives, and also offers the
potential for huge cost savings.’’
Thursday, 22 May 2014 22
Pioneering urine test could be available in GPs' surgeries worldwide by 2015.
Health and Social Care Research Highlights
• The University of Surrey is leading a pioneering research
project that could transform cancer care – and significantly
reduce healthcare costs – by enabling cancer care clinicians
to monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment for
breast, bowel and blood cancers via mobile phone.
• The €6 million grant from the European Union will fund a
large trial of the system involving 1,000 patients in England,
Austria, Greece, Holland, Ireland and Norway, with the hope
that this type of patient monitoring will be integrated into
routine cancer care in the future.
• Researchers believe the system will reduce the side effects of
chemotherapy, and help to identify and treat life-threatening
side effects much quicker than current care systems.
• Professor Nora Kearney, Professor of Cancer Care and Head
of the School of Health and Social Care, said: ―Over 3 million
people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Europe and it
is likely that this number will increase by at least 65% over
the next 20 years. ―Given this predicted increase, the need
for personalised cancer care is becoming even more crucial.
Our system will give patients continual support both during
and after chemotherapy, while allowing them to remain in the
comfort of their own homes. It will revolutionise the way our
healthcare system supports people with cancer.‖
Infectious Disease Group Research Highlight
• Working in collaboration with a team of archaeologists from the
University of Winchester, Surrey academics — including Professor
Graham Stewart, Dr Tom Mendum, HuiHai Wu and Dr Mike Taylor
— extracted DNA from skeletal samples buried at the medieval St
Mary Magdalen Hill leprosy hospital in Winchester. Read more in the
journal PlosOne.
• Because the ancient DNA was so well-preserved, the team was able
to reconstruct the entire genome of the ancient leprosy bacterium,
shedding light on the history of the disfiguring disease - once
endemic in Europe but which largely disappeared during the Middle
Ages. The team believes the waxy coat surrounding the leprosy
bacterium may have protected the DNA from degradation.
• Professor Stewart, acting head of the Department of Microbial and
Cellular Sciences, said: ―Understanding diseases from the past will
help us predict emerging infectious diseases and potentially suggest
how we may be better able to control existing diseases. We hope to
analyse even older DNA, tracing leprosy and also tuberculosis back
to their origins in human history.‖
• The research was published in the journal Science, as part of an
international project to reconstruct genome sequences of bacteria
from five medieval skeletons excavated in Denmark and Sweden, as
well as the United Kingdom. The research compared the ancient
genomes with those of 11 modern strains of leprosy from around the
world and revealed that leprosy in the Americas has a European
origin, and that particular leprosy strains now found exclusively in
the Middle East were at one time also present in Europe.

Breakthrough for Surrey’s life-saving cancer test • Tuesday 04 Mar 2014 • The University of Surrey has signed a licence deal to develop and market a groundbreaking new test that detects prostate and bladder cancers. • The test offers a more reliable way of discovering these cancers earlier, by testing a small urine sample for the EN2 protein which bladder and prostate cancers produce. • Hardev Pandha, Professor of Medical Oncology, is part of the team working on the project with Dr Richard Morgan, Senior Lecturer in Molecular Oncology. He said, "We are looking forward to working with Randox on this product. This new test could lead to a faster cancer detection that could save hundreds of lives, and also offers the potential for huge cost savings.’’ Thursday, 22 May 2014 22 Pioneering urine test could be available in GPs' surgeries worldwide by 2015.
  • 23. Health and Social Care Research Highlights • The University of Surrey is leading a pioneering research project that could transform cancer care – and significantly reduce healthcare costs – by enabling cancer care clinicians to monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast, bowel and blood cancers via mobile phone. • The €6 million grant from the European Union will fund a large trial of the system involving 1,000 patients in England, Austria, Greece, Holland, Ireland and Norway, with the hope that this type of patient monitoring will be integrated into routine cancer care in the future. • Researchers believe the system will reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, and help to identify and treat life-threatening side effects much quicker than current care systems. • Professor Nora Kearney, Professor of Cancer Care and Head of the School of Health and Social Care, said: ―Over 3 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Europe and it is likely that this number will increase by at least 65% over the next 20 years. ―Given this predicted increase, the need for personalised cancer care is becoming even more crucial. Our system will give patients continual support both during and after chemotherapy, while allowing them to remain in the comfort of their own homes. It will revolutionise the way our healthcare system supports people with cancer.‖
  • 24. Infectious Disease Group Research Highlight • Working in collaboration with a team of archaeologists from the University of Winchester, Surrey academics — including Professor Graham Stewart, Dr Tom Mendum, HuiHai Wu and Dr Mike Taylor — extracted DNA from skeletal samples buried at the medieval St Mary Magdalen Hill leprosy hospital in Winchester. Read more in the journal PlosOne. • Because the ancient DNA was so well-preserved, the team was able to reconstruct the entire genome of the ancient leprosy bacterium, shedding light on the history of the disfiguring disease - once endemic in Europe but which largely disappeared during the Middle Ages. The team believes the waxy coat surrounding the leprosy bacterium may have protected the DNA from degradation. • Professor Stewart, acting head of the Department of Microbial and Cellular Sciences, said: ―Understanding diseases from the past will help us predict emerging infectious diseases and potentially suggest how we may be better able to control existing diseases. We hope to analyse even older DNA, tracing leprosy and also tuberculosis back to their origins in human history.‖ • The research was published in the journal Science, as part of an international project to reconstruct genome sequences of bacteria from five medieval skeletons excavated in Denmark and Sweden, as well as the United Kingdom. The research compared the ancient genomes with those of 11 modern strains of leprosy from around the world and revealed that leprosy in the Americas has a European origin, and that particular leprosy strains now found exclusively in the Middle East were at one time also present in Europe.
