What is this money used for? Often the same reason any of us need credit for our businesses – Start up capital Working capital Buy in bulk Consumption smoothing Children’s school fees often due up front Improvements in housing Anything that improves the human condition and fights the effects of poverty Not a charity. Not a handout, but a hand up. Treating the poor with dignity, respect, and equality. Same as any other economically active member of society. Empowers the individual in a way that other macro development funding initiatives do not
The poor need financial services, and already use them informally: Borrowing money from loan sharks with interest rates so high that it may be impossible to ever pay back Savings accounts kept in the home, vulnerable to theft Investing in livestock which is vulnerable to disease

These short-term (1 month to 1 year) loans are generally slightly larger than loans given to community bank members ($100 to $300 range). Repayment happens frequently, usually by one member of the group. Subsequent loans are dependent on repayment by all members; thus, the group is responsible for follow-up with delinquent borrowers. The incentive to repay the loan is based on peer pressure - if one group member defaults, the other group members make up the payment amount. In some cases, each group member may be legally responsible for the debts of all other members of the group. Loan approval is based on a group assessment.
