2. Acharya P C Ray National Young Scientists' Conference
India has a long tradition of scientific culture and remained as beacon of wisdom and
learning. Acharya P C Ray advocated ‘We have reason to believe that ancient India was the cradle
of Mathematical sciences’. Acharya’s book, ‘A History of Hindu Chemistry’ gives detailed account
of our scientific heritage and Indian contribution to science. In the pre-independence British
period, some great scientists took giant efforts to revive our scientific tradition. Acharya Prafulla
Chandra Ray was pioneer among them.
India having the third largest number of scientific human resources and being fast growing
developing nation is at the verge of many basic issues which can be addressed through the
intervention of science and technology. In the world of scientific community, India is going to
contribute the biggest number of young scientists and technocrats. National Young Scientists’

groups as well as together with the policy makers and the great scientists of the country.
Acharya P C Ray (born on 2 August 1861), the father of Indian Chemical Industry and a role
model in the scientific world, is a real inspiration and guiding force for the younger generation. This
conference has been dedicated to Acharya P C Ray to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary to
highlight his contributions.
Acharya started his journey as a teacher and scientist in the Presidency College (now
Presidency University) in 1889 and continued there till his retirement at 1916 and thereafter
completed his journey and spent rest of his life from 1916 to 1936 in the University College of
Science, Calcutta University where he built up the department of Chemistry to a great height and
breathed his last in a room at the campus. Both the Universities nourished and cherished by
Acharya P C Ray’s presence and contributions have joined together with Vivekananda Vijnan
Mission (Bengal chapter of Vijnana Bharati) to organise this Young Scientists’ Conference. This is
the third National Young Scientists’ Conference initiated by Vijnana Bharati.
We are most privileged and confident in announcing this unique scientific meet at the Procession by students at Howrah on
premises of Presidency University and Calcutta University. The patronage and support of Dr Acharya P C Ray’s 150th Birth Day

PLAN OF THE CONFERENCE: The conference include Plenary lectures, Invited Lectures
and Contributory Research papers in the form of oral presentation in English only and poster
presentation both in English and Hindi languages.
PARTICIPANTS: The Conference is opened for Young Scientists, Technocrats, Academicians,
Policy Makers, Entrepreneurs, Research Scholars, Students and other professionals having
innovative practice and ideas and likings for science.
AGE LIMIT FOR PARTICIPATION: The participants within 40 years of age are eligible
to join the conference as DELEGATE and those above 40 years as OBSERVER.

ABOUT KOLKATA:
Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal State. Located on the east
bank of the Hooghly River, it is the commercial capital of eastern India.
Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911 when due to growing
national movement in Bengal, the capital was shifted to Delhi. The city is noted for its vibrant
political culture ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to contemporary politics.
Once the center of modern education, science, culture and politics in India, Kolkata produced
Scientists like J C Bose, Satyen Bose, P C Ray, M N Saha, S N Dey and many more. All the Nobel
Belur Math, Howrah
laureates of India - Ronald Ross, Rabindranath Tagore, C V Raman, Mother Teresa, Amartya Sen
and great exponent of India - Swami Vivekananda, great leader - Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

Vivekananda Vijnan Mission
Vivekananda Vijnan Mission is the West Bengal State Unit of Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA).
Vijnana Bharati is essentially a nationalistic, patriotic and humanistic science movement where
science, involving both engineering and technology, is aimed at societal development, social
harmony, ecological balance and environmental sanctity. Vijnana Bharati is more expressively
popular as Swadeshi Science Movement where "Swadeshi" connotes the Bharatiya World View
on Science where from a single framework, all the three knowledge systems, viz. natural sciences,
social sciences, and spiritual sciences, have been developed integrally, holistically and all- Jawaharlal Nehru Prize received from Hon.
Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh
inclusively right from the Vedic times. VIBHA is a movement in the field of Science and
Technology. It propagates its knowledge globally and adopts the spirit of swadeshi with the
ethos of Indian culture.
It has received two national awards for popularizing science. VIBHA conducts regularly world
congresses on Vedic sciences, Ayurveda and also holds the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan. VIBHA
has 21 active state units, four international units and more than 5000 scientists as active life
members. It has the largest number of young research scholars and students as workers involving
in different projects and programs all over the country.
Vivekananda Vijnan Mission is holding many programmes in the state. It organised seminar on
Scientific Heritage and Ayurveda, celebrated 150th birth anniversary of Sir J C Bose and Acharya F P Marconi, Renowned Physicist, grandson
of Marconi with Prof Sibaji Raha, Director,
P C Ray through exhibition, seminars, publishing books and DVDs etc. Recently an Energy Rally Bose Institute, Dr V P Bhatkar &
was organnised from Kolkata and it reached Nagpur covering Jharkhand, Bihar, UP, MP, Prof N K Maity during inauguration of
150th Birth Anniversary Celebration of
Chattishgarh in its way and got huge response from people in this energy campaign. Sir J C Bose at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata
Presidency University
Established as Hindu College in 1817, it is the oldest educational institute in India. It was
founded by Raja Rammohan Roy and other eminent personalities like Raja Radha Kanta Deb,
Maharaja Tejchandra Ray of Burdwan, David Hare, Prasanna Kumar Thakur etc. Pupils came
from all parts of the country.
In 1855, it was taken over by the Government and renamed as the Presidency College. It came under
University of Calcutta in 1857. Eminent teachers like Sir J C Bose, Acharya P C Ray taught in the college.
Energy rally at Kolkata on 12 January 2011
During freedom movement, the college was epicentre of nationalist activities. With Subhas
Chandra Bose in the helm of affairs, the historic Oaten incident occurred here in 1916. Before

Bengal Engineering College (now University, BESU) and Indian Statistical Institute started from
this college during their foundation.
In 2010, Presidency College is upgraded to Presidency University by a legislative act.
Calcutta University
Established in 1857, it was the first multidisciplinary modern University in south Asia with
enormous territorial jurisdiction from Lahore to Rangoon and Ceylon. Calcutta University was
the heart of Indian education in British period and played pivotal role in Indian Renaissance.
Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of 'Vandemataram' was one of two first

Its alumni include notable statesmen like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose; Pandit Madan Mohan

Lyngdoh, Chief Minister of Meghalaya have CU as their alma Mater. Sk Mujibur Rahaman, Ex

students of CU. Industrialists R P Goenka, Lakshmi Mittal, Aditya Birla; Scientists J C Bose,
Meghnath Saha, Satyendra Nath Bose were also students of this University. Four Nobel laureates
associated with CU are Ronald Ross, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Chandrasekhara Venkatraman and
Amartya Sen. Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan, ex-President of India; Abanindra Nath Tagore etc taught
here. Sir Asutosh Mukherjee and Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee were among notable VCs. The
university is rightly proud of galaxy of talents.
