Local authorities have been given renewed responsibility for public health. They can take action in several ways like ensuring mothers are healthy before and during pregnancy to reduce infant mortality, promoting healthy schools and education to provide returns of £7.20 for every £1 invested, and helping people find and stay in jobs to prevent depression from unemployment. Local authorities also have a role in active and safe travel, making homes safer, increasing access to green spaces, building strong communities to address loneliness, improving air quality, and planning healthy places through spatial planning.
