9. Essential Oils For Beginners
INTRODUCTION
Aromatherapy is a kind of healing
therapy, which is entirely, or wholly,
based on using pure “A” grade essential
oils extracted from plants, for physical
well-being and health. Essential oils are
all-natural oils that provide stimulating
therapeutic benefits to the body as well as
to your mind. Essential oils not only
relieve anxiety and emotional stress, but
also bring harmony and balance to your
life. They provide several health benefits
and help to cure major and minor
diseases.
Essential oils are extracted from
herbs, flowers and other elements of
plants, so they are highly concentrated. It
is very important to understand how and
when to use essential oils. In addition, you
should also know how these oils are
extracted, which properties they have and
9

which oils you should use to cure several
ailments as natural remedies.
Aromatherapy is both relaxing and
stimulating, depending upon the choice of
essential oils and the technique applied.
The book “Essential Oils For Beginners:

Essential Oils For Healing” is a complete
step-by-step guide to choosing and using
best essential oils for different health

CHAPTER 1
The Basics of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy, also known as
Essential Oil Therapy, is both an art
and science that involves using
aromatic plant oils like essential oils
and various aromatic elements to
harmonize, balance and improve the
physical, psychological and emotional
well-being. For example, smell the
roses, they contains several properties
like sedative, antiseptic,
antidepressant, antiviral, anti-
spasmodic, heart tonic, laxative, etc. to
name a few.
What is Aeromatherapy?
Aromatherapy can be provided as
an alternative medicine or
complementary therapy, alongside
12
13. Essential Oils For Beginners
ordinary treatment. Aroma therapists or
those who specialize in this practice, use
several blends of aromatic essential oils
issued through massage, topical
application, or inhalation to improve the
chances of getting desired results. In
aromatherapy, pure essential oils are
used in a controlled way.
The term “Aromatherapy” is
originated from “Aromatherapie” that is
influenced by a French chemist Rene
Maurice Gattefosse. In 1920s, he met a
laboratory accident due to which his hand
13
14. Laura Serio
and arm were burnt. He sunk his hand in
the jar of pure lavender oil by mistake. He
felt speedy recovery of his third degree
burns without scarring. He instantly made
a research on the properties of essential
lavender oil, which helped in recovery.
Lavender oil was being used to recover
the limbs of soldiers who were lost
because of gangrene during World War II.
Some essential oils like tea tree oil
have been found with anti-microbial
properties. But there is still no solid
evidence found that proves its efficiency
against fungal, bacterial and viral
infections.
History of Aromatherapy
The history of aromatherapy dates
back to around 3500 years ago. The roots
of aromatherapy are inexorably
connected to the use of aromatic
14
15. Essential Oils For Beginners
medicines, which were combined with
mysticism, religion and magic.
That was the time when incense
made of aromatic herbs, woods, and
spices, was first burned by ancient
Egyptians in honor of their lords.
According to them, the smoke reaches the
heavens carrying their wishes and
prayers to their gods directly.
An Insight to Infinity
Egyptians were developed the
process of mummification and embalming
in Egypt during the 2650 BC to 2575 BC
(over the period of 3rd
Dynasty) for
seeking immortality. They used
galbanum, frankincense, myrrh,
cedarwood, cinnamon, spikenard and
juniper berry to preserve the royal bodies
for preparing the afterlife.
They supplied the valuable spices
and herbs manually through Arab
15

merchants around hostile deserts for
distribution in Babylon, Assyria, Greece,
China, Egypt, Persia and Rome. Myrrh and
frankincense were the most desired
materials. Very soon, the demand for
these materials overtook supply.
Suddenly, their value sky-rocketed and
these materials cost equal to that of
expensive metals and gems.
Egyptians – The Fathers of Perfumery
Egyptians were obsessed to use
common fragrances every day and in
every occasion. At celebrations and
festive seasons, women used perfumed
cones, which melt with heat and release
soothing fragrance. They smear
themselves with oil after bathing to
prevent the dryness with the sun and to
flourish their skin.
During the period from 1539 BC to
657 BC (from 18th
to 25th
Dynasty),
Egyptians kept on using aromatics in
16

medicine, incense, cosmetics and
perfumes. The perfumery in Egypt was
renowned as the leading industry in the
entire Middle East, just a couple of
hundred years before the Christ’s birth.
Entry of Aromatherapy in Greece
During the last millennia, the
prosperity of botanical pharmacopoeia of
Egypt had been incorporated by several
other cultures. The vast knowhow of
aromatic treatments of the Egyptians has
been adopted by the Hebrews,
Babylonians and Assyrians. Around 300
BC when the breakdown of Egyptian
empire was started, Europe earned
reputation as the soul of experimental
medicine. They instantly evolved the new
methods of healing which were
scientifically proven too.
Asclepius was a Greek physician
who practiced combining surgery and
herbs with his lastly unrivalled skills in
1200 BC. Even after his demise, he was
17
18. Laura Serio
known as the god of healing. His
reputation in Greek mythology was so
grand that thousands of healing temples
were erected and known as Asclepieon in
his honor.
The Lord of Medicine
Hippocrates was the first doctor
who dismissed the belief of Europeans
that supernatural powers are responsible
for illness. Instead, he suggested the
physicians to observe the patient and find
out practical and sensible causes of
disease, and judge just according to the
symptoms.
His treatment basically consists of
baths, mild physiotherapies, massaging,
or using the herbs internally like parsley,
fennel, valerian and hypericum. In his
lifetime, Hippocrates has documented and
researched around 200 kinds of herbs.
Hence, we should thank Hippocrates for
18

such a great concept that stands true to
‘Holistic Aromatherapy’.
The Safety Concerns With
Aromatherapy
If used under the supervision of an
expert practitioner or as recommended,
aromatherapy is safe. Otherwise,
aromatherapy involves threats of several
harmful effects and its issues, probably
with less evidence of therapeutic benefits,
making it a doubtful practice.
Essential oils are concentrated
severely. So, you should beware as they
19
20. Laura Serio
can cause skin irritation if applied in
diluted form. For topical application,
essential oils are diluted with carrier oil,
like olive oil, jojoba oil, or coconut oil.
Citrus peel oils may cause phototoxic
reactions, like lime or lemon. Some
essential oils have sensitizers and other
chemical elements (after several uses,
they may cause skin irritation and
reactions to the body). If original plants
were cultivated, some essential oils may
cause chemical reactions and allergies
due to pesticides.
Tea tree and lavender are two
popular essential oils that may cause
abnormal growth of breast tissue,
gynaecomastia etc. if used without proper
care. An essential oil, which is considered
safe for public use, may still cause harm
for lactating or pregnant women, if it has
any bioactive substance. When someone
suggests ingesting essential oils for
therapeutic benefits, professional aroma
therapists don’t recommend self-
20
21. Essential Oils For Beginners
consumption because some of these oils
are highly toxic.
If taken internally, Eucalyptus or
some popular oils are very toxic. Doses,
even lower than 1 tsp, have been alleged
to cause symptoms and after taking 4 to 5
ml, it may cause severe poisoning. After
ingestion of cedar, sage, thuja, hyssop etc,
few cases have been recorded related to
toxic reactions like seizures and liver
damage. If not taken out of your
children’s reach, sudden ingestion may
occur. With both application to skin and
ingestion with conventional medicine,
essential oils may cause adverse reaction.
Oral consumption of these oils is
strongly not recommended without
supervision and care of experienced
doctor. Several essential oils have high
toxicity levels. So, don’t apply undiluted
essential oils on your skin or you may feel
discomfort. It is best to keep eyes closed
when inhaling these oils. Don’t apply any
essential oil near your eyes. Mint oil or
21
22. Laura Serio
other specific oils may cause insomnia. So,
don’t apply at night.
