The unifying characteristics may be physical, human, or cultural. In People interact with other people, places, and things almost every day of their lives. They travel from one place to another; they communicate with each other; and they rely upon products, information, and ideas that come from beyond their immediate environment. In studying human/environment interaction, geographers look at all the effectsâpositive and negativeâthat occur when people interact with their surroundings. All places have characteristics that give them meaning and character and distinguish them from other places on earth. Every point on Earth has a specific location that is determined by an imaginary grid of lines denoting latitude and longitude.

A simple, inflatable globe can be used to teach, reinforce and assess many geography concepts. In the younger grades students will be asked to differentiate between water and land, the cardinal directions, and different landforms. As the grades increase students may be asked to locate a state capital, recall political or demographic knowledge, etc. This activity can easily be adjusted for any grade level. It is also a fun way to teach geography. Depending on the grade level and the purpose of the activity students will be learning new information, practicing concepts they have already learned, or are demonstrating their proficiency in a given area.
