What is Geographic Literacy? “Geographic literacy is more than knowing state capitals. It's understanding how people and places interact, where things come from, and where we're going. Without geography, our young people are unprepared for an increasingly global future.” -2006 National Geographic-Roper Survey of Geographic Literacy
Survey Results Young adults ages 18-24 Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003 6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently 20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia (It's the largest country in Africa) 48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim (It's Hindu—by a landslide) Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map
The Solution Phase 1: My Wonderful World Public Service Advertising Coalition Projects Internet Resources: www.mywonderfulworld.org Policy Advocacy
Phase 2: 80% geographic literacy among 18-24 yr olds by 2025 Top-down policy/bottom-up consumer demand Federal, state, and philanthropic funding Large-scale educational reform at state and local levels
A Teacher’s Role Incorporate geography into daily routines Foster a love of geography in all students Utilize ‘teachable moments’

  7. Create a combination of top-down policy and bottom-up consumer demand for geographic literacy. Obtain sufficient resources in the form of federal, state, and philanthropic funding to mount a large-scale reform effort. Create and implement plans for large-scale educational reform at the state and local levels.
  8. 8 geography standards for K-12How/where do you find the time?
  9. The unifying characteristics may be physical, human, or cultural. In People interact with other people, places, and things almost every day of their lives. They travel from one place to another; they communicate with each other; and they rely upon products, information, and ideas that come from beyond their immediate environment. In studying human/environment interaction, geographers look at all the effects—positive and negative—that occur when people interact with their surroundings. All places have characteristics that give them meaning and character and distinguish them from other places on earth. Every point on Earth has a specific location that is determined by an imaginary grid of lines denoting latitude and longitude.
  10. Graph the top 10 most polluted cities by 1) type of pollutant, 2) number of people affected.
  11. A simple, inflatable globe can be used to teach, reinforce and assess many geography concepts. In the younger grades students will be asked to differentiate between water and land, the cardinal directions, and different landforms. As the grades increase students may be asked to locate a state capital, recall political or demographic knowledge, etc. This activity can easily be adjusted for any grade level. It is also a fun way to teach geography.Depending on the grade level and the purpose of the activity students will be learning new information, practicing concepts they have already learned, or are demonstrating their proficiency in a given area.
  12. Compare the major ideas of philosophers and their effects on the democratic revolutions in England, the United States, France, and Latin America
