• Active participation in class discussions and
regular attendance.You will earn real points for
your participation in activities.

• Formal writing: three in-class essays; two out of
class essays, and a final reflection essay.
• A series of homework posts to the class discussion
board
• Reading quizzes and in-class assignments.
• A final portfolio of your passing work
• One in-class essay, one out-of-class essay, and your
reflection essay
4. Using Canvas
We will use Canvas to communicate, see grades,
access course documents and assignments, and
submit essays and homework.
Our class is published on Canvas.You should be able to access this
course soon by logging into Canvas and using your college credentials.

You will be taken to the Canvas dashboard where you should see our

If you do not have access to this course via Canvas by Saturday,
September 23rd, please let me know.
5. When you first log in to Canvas, the website will look similar
to this. Start by clicking on “pages” to enlarge the framed
picture part of the webpage.

6. Notice the expansion of the screen. Here you can easily access the links to the course
presentations, discussion forums, and online reading links. Click on “Week 1” and then
“Class 1” to review todays presentation and to do your homework using the
“discussion” link.

7. The links on the left of this view will help you navigate the Canvas site.
You can check your grades, assignments, and announcements here. All
the way to the left, you will see your calendar, which is quick way to
check due dates.

8. To enlarge the primary page even further, click on the three horizontal lines (the
hamburger) in this view.This configuration makes the primary page the easiest to
navigate.
9. Posting Homework
• Click on the icon for “Week 1” on the
home page
• Click on the icon for “Class 1” on the
next page
• Click on the link to the “Class 1
Discussion”
• Click on the “Reply” button to post
your homework
10. Spend some time perusing the
website. Note in particular the
course calendar and green sheet.
Make sure you know where to
post your homework: Look
under “Week 1,” “Class 1,” and
“Discussion.”
We will discuss using the
webpage briefly during class 1.

Slide 6:Texts and Required Materials: We will use a textbook, The St. Martin’s Guide to Writing, and a novel, The Hunger Games for this class. You will also need a large Blue Book for your first in-class essay exam. You can buy all three at the bookstore, or you can order the two books online. You have two weeks to get your books. You will need your bluebook by our third meeting for the in class essay.
