2. Episode 1- The City- 10 years ago, Diane Clarke’s first
major story is covering the 7/7 Bombings in London.
Now, 10 years later on the 10th Anniversary, covering
the impact on the city, the GBMC team are forced to
face the impact of the event on their own lives.
The show starts with a montage of the news reports of the 7/7
terror attacks, with a voiceover. This then moves to the report by
GBMC of the attacks with each character being introduced as
the opening goes along. The episode then continues to the 10
year anniversary and how everybody feels about the attacks.
3. Episode 2- Facedown- While reporting on The Greek
Economic Crisis, Sarah comes across a story that forces
her to face up to some of the demons from her past.
Meanwhile, Diane clashes with Gary.
The episode ends with the closing of the day in the GMBC
offices and all of the colleagues travel to their local bar, where
a blazing argument results in the firing of John Clarke, who
had made a serious error that day and the episode closes as
punches start to fly.
4. The episode again opens with a montage, this time of the
Greek economic crisis and cuts to Sarah reporting about the
economics of the situation when she is approached by the
government to help produce an economics report. Here, the
Government find some information that causes Sarah a great
deal of distress.
Also, after last weeks bar-room brawl, we see Diane clash with
Gary in an attempt to save John’s job and prevent Gary from
pressing assault charges. This story continues through the
episode and closes with Gary disclosing to Diane that he is Gay
after agreeing not to press charges.
5. Episode 3- A Change of Heart- When a news story
causes outrage and Stuart doesn’t seem effected, Diane
goes to great lengths to change his mind. Meanwhile,
John faces some tough decisions.
The world weeps when the body of a drowned migrant toddler
is found on a Turkish beach, but Stuart does not seem effected
and takes a harsh stance on the situation, causing Diane to stress
and begin to take long strides in order to change his mind. This
episode deals with immigration debate.
6. Episode 4- Girls- As a historic event unfolds in Cuba,
Sarah, Rosa and Gillian are pushed to work together,
resulting in some unexpected consequences.
Meanwhile, Gary reveals some surprising information to
Diane.
Meanwhile, after the recent closeness between Gillian and
John, he must decide whether he wants to pursue a future
with Gillian or save his marriage to Diane. The episode ends
with John telling one of them that he wants them, with the
viewer not seeing who he has chosen.
7. Sarah, Rosa and Gillian take a trip to Cuba to report on
the opening of an American embassy in Cuba, which
mostly results in conflict, clashes and power struggles.
Until they get to the hotel, where they begin to work
through their issues.
Back in Britain, Gary begins to act odd, causing a game of
cat and mouse between him and Diane, until finally she
corners Gary and extracts from him why he has been
acting so strangely all day. The episode ends with a
conversation in Gary’s office.
8. Episode 5- Heart Out- As the countries of the
world face breakdowns and conflict, Stuart finds
himself in a tragic situation. Diane continues to
help Gary, to the ire of an uninformed John.
Stuart travels to Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital in
Kunduz, Afghanistan and is caught up in the devastation of
an air strike. He remains unharmed, but the harrowing
experience effects him, as we hear through his phone
conversation with Rosa back in the GBMC buildings.
9. Episode 6- Somebody Else- While Stuart takes
time out, Diane is faced with a day with a new
assistant, an event which turns out to be more
than it seems at first. Meanwhile, Gary jumps in
at the deep end.
Meanwhile, Diane helps Gary come to terms with who he is
but this is not what John sees. He grows jealous that Diane
and Gary are coming closer and causes a scene between the
pair. The episode ends when John goes to tell Diane their
marriage is over, until Stuart returns, leading to an emotional
scene in the offices.
10. Stuart is shown to be struggling with his recent experiences,
having flashbacks and a slight breakdown. When he is told to
go home, Diane’s replacement becomes a problem, ending in
a kiss seen by John, who promptly strikes the new assistant
and storms out of GBMC, effectively ending his marriage with
Diane. He goes to the bar and is comforted by Gillian.
Gary is shown to take a personal day, where he
meets a rather intriguing man, and debates how
far he wants to go. The episode ends with Gary
making up his mind and taking a leap of faith.
11. Episode 7- Settle Down- After Gary’s escapade last
week, he finds himself in a position he never thought he
would be in. Meanwhile, John and Gillian take tentative
steps as Diane is left to pick up the pieces.
In a partly flashback episode, we look back at John and Diane’s
relationship while in the present day we see Diane devastated at
the end of their marriage and John and Gillian taking their
relationship to the next level, albeit slowly and not necessarily
very successfully. The episode ends with Gillian breaking up with
John in front of the whole GBMC staff.
12. Episode 8- UGH- A busy day in politics means a
busy day for GBMC as everyone scrambles to keep
up with their jobs. Diane’s personal life interferes
in her work life and could put the whole
Newsroom in danger.
Gary’s story is again expanded upon as he begins to accept his new
life and he begins to re-form his relationships with his employees,
leading many to question just why he is being so nice. Rosa, with her
natural reporters skills, approaches Gary and tells him that she knows,
which prompts him (the the bewilderment of his colleagues) to
announce his news to everyone.
13. All eyes turn to the shooting down of a Russian warplane by
Turkey over Syria, and many question how they report this to
the world, leading them to make a mistake in the reporting,
likening it to the cold war and sending the country into panic.
The episode ends with Gary disciplining everybody and Diane
having to report a retraction of their story.
Diane also faces a tough day as a confrontation between her and
Gillian causes friction, until Gillian reveals that John had hit her.
This causes Diane to confront John in front of everyone and
upon the revelation, Gary fires John. The episode ends with
clear connotations that John’s sacking will have lasting effects.
14. Episode 9- Robbers- The first of a two-part finale
sees the news of the Paris terror attacks flood in
and while concern for Sarah reaches boiling
point, sinister cogs are turning elsewhere.
Everybody in the GBMC offices has no other focus as they are
called in overnight to cover the Paris terror attacks, but when it
is revealed that Sarah had travelled to Paris, the news company
becomes concerned for her safety.
15. Episode 10- Antichrist- After a successful albeit emotional
coverage of the Paris attacks, The Newsroom is about to be
placed in waters that are out of their depth. With Gary and
Sarah seemingly out of the game, Gemma and Rosa attempt
to take matters into their own hands.
This episode shows John’s continual mental breakdown as he
plots his revenge against his former colleagues, leading him
back to the news buildings with a gun. Before he gets there,
he encounters Gary, who confronts John, leading to the
episode’s end of Gary being shot.
16. Diane, Gillian and Stuart, after their successful albeit
emotional coverage of the Paris Terror attacks attempt
to leave the building until they too encounter John, who
holds them captive in the studios, while Stuart attempts
to talk him down.
Rosa, who saw the encounter between John and Gary,
attempts to provide aid to Gary and both manage to
escape alive and call the police. The episode ends with
John ending his own life in front of his ex-wife and his
colleagues.
