1. My media product ‘Killer Affairs’ conforms to the stereotypes of thriller films by using
a variety of non-naturalistic camera shots in order to show a Brechtian perspective of
the narrative. These shots include extreme close -ups of characters faces, emphasising
to the audience that these people are victims of murder. I intended on doing this, to
make the audience feel uncomfortable by witnessing scenes in a non -naturalistic
form. These camera shots have been enhanced by the editing the footage, to create
jump cuts, continuing to make the audience feel vulnerable whilst viewing the film in
a non-naturalistic way; thus conforming to the stereotypes of thriller movies.
The mise-en-scene also conforms to the thriller genre, especially by using an
investigation board to introduce the narrative to viewers. The use of the whiteboard
with dark, blue lighting gives the film opening a ‘cold’ atmosphere; making viewers
feel ‘on-edge’ from the very start of the movie. The use of the pictures on the board
also introduces the movies plot but doesn’t provide the audience with the overall
narrative; continuing to make the audience feel uncomfortable.
Non-diegetic sound is also used throughout the opening segment of ‘Killer Affair’s’
exaggerating the fear viewers should be feeling, using an ‘eerie’ uncomfortable tone
with a crescendo building throughout. This creates a feeling of uncertainty for the
audience, making them feel vulnerable for hearing music from an unidentifiable
source. The sound used in the film opening also conforms to the genre of thriller
movies.
