 Journalism is a method of inquiry and literary style
that aims to provide a service to the public by the
dissemination and analysis of news and other
information.
 Journalistic integrity is based on the principles of
truth, disclosure, and editorial independence.
 Journalistic mediums can vary diversely, from print
publishing to electronic broadcasting, and from
newspaper to television channels, as well as to the web,
and to digital technology.
 Journalism, however, is not always confined to the
news media or to news itself, as journalistic
communication may find its way into broader forms of
expression, including literature and cinema. In some
nations, the news media is still controlled by
government intervention, and is not fully an
independent body.
 In a democratic society, however, access to free
information plays a central role in creating a system of
checks and balance, and in distributing power equally
between governments, businesses, individuals, and
other social entities. Access to verifiable information
gathered by independent media sources, which adhere
to journalistic standards, can also be of service to
ordinary citizens, by empowering them with the tools
they need in order to participate in the political
process.
 This has created a shift in the consumption of print
media channels, as people increasingly consume news
through e-readers, smartphones, and other electronic
devices, challenging news organizations to fully
monetize their digital wing, as well as improvise on the
context in which they publish news in print.
 This has created a shift in the consumption of print
media channels, as people increasingly consume news
through e-readers, smartphones, and other electronic
devices, challenging news organizations to fully
monetize their digital wing, as well as improvise on the
context in which they publish news in print.
 Citizen journalism is the collecting and reporting of
information via social media, public platforms, and
traditional news outlets, either by non-traditional
sources or the public or as an alternative and activist
form of news gathering and reporting that functions
outside mainstream media institutions, often as a
response to shortcomings in the professional
journalistic field, that uses similar journalistic
practices but is driven by different objectives and
ideals and relies on alternative sources of legitimacy
than traditional or mainstream journalism.
 The digital era has also ushered in a new kind of journalism
in which ordinary citizens play a greater role in the process
of newsmaking, with the rise of citizen journalism being
possible through the Internet.Using video camera
equipped smartphones, active citizens are now enabled to
record footage of news events and upload them onto
channels like YouTube, which is often discovered and used
by mainstream news media outlets. Meanwhile, easy access
to news from a variety of online sources, like blogs and
other social media, has resulted in readers being able to
pick from a wider choice of official and unofficial sources,
instead of only from traditional media organizations.
 In Indonesia the press began to be known in the 18th century, precisely in 1744, when a newspaper
called "BataviascheNouvelles" was published with the Dutch company. The first newspaper as a
reading for the natives began in 1854 when the magazine "Bianglala" was published, followed by
"Bromartani" in 1885, both in Weltevreden, in 1856 "SoeratKabarBahasaMelajoe" in Surabaya.
Since then various newspapers have emerged with the news informative, in accordance with the
situation and conditions in the colonial era.
 Judging from the quality and quantity aspect, the history of Indonesian press and journalism since
then has been encouraging and proud of us. In 1988 there were 263 press releases, in 1992 that
number increased to 277 press releases.
 In the first two decades of the New Order, 1965-1985, freedom of journalism in Indonesia, it can
be called more tangent to the dimensions, elements, values, and economic spirits than the
political dimension. As an economic means, the press can live with fertile but as a vehicle of
expression, a general opinion distributor, a bearer of social control functions, the press of
Indonesia is faced with various restrictions and pressures from central and local authorities. The
New Order strongly flattered the economy but hated politics. Throughout the 1980s, the function
of the press is still shrinking, along with the government's tightening of controls on political
activities in society. The main function of the press as information communicators has declined so
that the more prominent is its other functions as a means of entertainment. The press is
experiencing laments, especially in the field of political education.Freedom of journalism has
changed drastically into journalistic independence. There was euphoria everywhere at that time.
 Juridically, the Press Law No 21/1982 was replaced by the Press Law No 40/1999.
With new laws and new governments, anyone can publish and manage the
press. Anyone can be a journalist and enter any press organization. This is
affirmed in Article 9 paragraph (1) of the Press Law No. 40/1999, every
Indonesian citizen and state has the right to establish a press company.
Reaffirmed in paragraph (2), every press company must be Indonesian legal
entity.
 Journalism activities are closely related to the development of publications and
information technology. In the period between 1880-1900, there were advances
in journalistic publications. The most prominent is the start of the use of fast
printing press, so the deadline writing news can be postponed until the
evening and began the appearance of a photo in the newspaper.
 The rapid development of computer technology in 1970-1980 also changed the
way and the production process of news. In addition to deadlines can be
delayed as long as possible, the print process, print copies that can be done in
massif, perwajahan, to advertising, and marketing experience a very big change
with the use of computers in the mass media industry.
 Entering the era of the 1990s, the use of computer technology is not limited in
the editorial room alone. Increasingly sophisticated notebook computers
equipped with modems and wireless technology, as well as access to text,
photo, and video delivery via the Internet or via satellite, have made it easier for
journalists to cover even the most difficult terrain.
 In addition, in this era also appears media multimedia journalism. The giant
media companies have penetrated various market segments and news readers.
Not only business print media, radio, and television that they run, but also the
world of the Internet, with advertising space is not less extensive.
1 Society can employ
information access to
participate in politics
3rd paragraph (In a democratic society, however, access
to free information plays a central role in creating a

information gathered by independent media sources,

2 Journalistic mediums

from newspaper to television channels, as well as to the
web, and to digital technology.)
3 Ordinary
people may
play a
significant role
in the process
of news making
5th paragraph (This compactness in coverage has been linked to broad
audience attrition, as a large majority of respondents in recent studies show
changing preferences in news consumption.[5] The digital era has also
ushered in a new kind of journalism in which ordinary citizens play a greater
role in the process of newsmaking, with the rise of citizen journalism being
possible through the Internet. Using video camera equipped smartphones,

4 There is a great
change in the
role and status
of journalism
with the
emergence of
news
publication
4th paragraph (The role and status of journalism, along with that of the
mass media, has undergone profound changes over the last two decades
with the advent of digital technology and publication of news on the
Internet.[3] This has created a shift in the consumption of print media
channels, as people increasingly consume news through e-readers,
smartphones, and other electronic devices, challenging news organizations
to fully monetize their digital wing, as well as improvise on the context in
which they publish news in print. Notably, in the American media
landscape, newsrooms have reduced their staff and coverage as traditional
media channels, such as television, grapple with declining audiences. For
instance, between 2007 and 2012, CNN edited its story packages into nearly
half of their original time length.)
5 News media is the
center of public
information
2nd paragraph (In modern society, the news media is
the chief purveyor of information and opinion about
public affairs. Journalism, however, is not always
confined to the news media or to news itself, as
