Social media-what is it and
general things to know
By Sarah
What is “Social Media” ?
• Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow
people to create, share or exchange information, ideas,
and pictures/videos in virtual communities and
networks.
File showing different
types of social media
How do you stay safe when you're on
social media?
You will be seeing the following slides:
✓ Chatting
✓ Tips and Tricks
CHATTING
The Golden Rule
➢If you’re chatting online MAKE SURE
YOU DO NOT GIVE AWAY ANY
PERSONAL INFOMATION! This
includes your full name, address or
school. Even giving a street name can
be enough to allow someone to find
you. If anyone ever asks you for this
information, tell a trusted adult straight
away.
Tips and Tricks
1. Never give away any personal information.
2. Don’t respond if you DO NOT know who is
contacting you.
3. Don’t use your real name use a nickname
4. Put your real age otherwise strangers might try
to contact you.
5. Don’t put your mobile number on your account
– your real friends will already have it.
When you are old enough to use social media…
Remember this simple code when you are online. The
code has three simple actions:
Zip it - keep your personal stuff private and think
about what you say and do online.
Block it - block people who send you nasty messages
and don’t open unknown links and attachments.
Flag it - flag up with someone you trust if anything
upsets you or if someone asks to meet you offline.
DON’T KEEP QUIET!
If something happens to you online and it
causes you concern, remember to tell someone.
You can report inappropriate behaviour to the
police. Look for this button which will enable
you to log incidents with the Child Exploitation
and Online Protection service, who will
investigate.
Top Tips on how to react if this
happens to you.
Introduction
Bullying doesn't only happen on the
playground anymore. Children everywhere
are being bullied online, on phones and on
other technical devices.
But that’s not the worst thing. Children who
are victims to this form of bullying feel
threatened and unable to report it. But if
this happens to you just remember, no
matter what, tell an adult you trust.
Top tips
1.Don’t respond. If you respond the
person/people who have bullied you will
just carry on.
2.Tell an adult you trust. Never feel like you
can’t tell. The person who has bullied
you can’t get to you.
3.Save the evidence. You don’t need to
look at it but save it so you can show
someone.
A good website for help
■ Thinkuknow – home
Is a great website with lots of cool tips for
kids and adults. It’s also got games,
videos and quizzes to make it fun!
On Our Lady’s school blog there’s also
lots of links to E-safety websites so you
don't need to worry about finding advice.
Remember, if something
isn’t right, tell an adult
you trust!
Thanks for watching my presentation

How to stay safe on
Facebook
Stay safe…
What is Facebook?
Facebook is a social media where you can
add, text and video call people (if you are
on mobile). However, if you add the
wrong people you are exposing yourself
to danger. Also you need to be 13 or
over to be on Facebook.
How to delete your account
Delete your account by going to the bottom
and clicking ‘help’ (when you are logged
in) type delete in the search box, click on
‘how do I permanently delete my
account? Then click ‘submit your request
here’. Finally, click ‘submit’ and your
account is deleted.
Who to add (if you are 13 or over).
Only add people that you know because
there is a chance that you might be cyber
bullied or hacked and that isn’t good
because they might find out some
personal things about you. Never tell
anyone anything personal.
If you want to use Facebook safely all you have to do is
follow all of these steps and you will be able to use it
safely.
Remember you must be 13 or over to have a Facebook
account.
Thank you for listening!!

In this Power point I will be telling you different
facts about WhatsApp. Let’s get started…
• WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform, mobile
messaging app which allows you to exchange messages
without having to pay for SMS.
• It’s fast becoming the most popular app amongst young
people as it is a free and easy way of staying in
contact with your friends, as people can group
message each other.
WHAT IS WHATSAPP?
1. WhatsApp's guidelines state quite
clearly no child under the age of 16
should be downloading or using the
app.
2. Whatsapp is the world’s most popular
messaging app but almost failed
before it even started.
FACTS…
Social Networking
• Never ever under any circumstances put your full address on your
site.
• It’s a very good idea to use a nickname online- because your friends
will know your nickname so they’ll know it’s you.
• Always put your real age on your site- if you lie and say your older
adults may try to contact you .
• It’s not a very good idea to put your mobile number on your site-
anyways your real friends will already know it.
• By the way all this information was originally found on the ‘Think u
know’ website.
The dangers of using Whatsapp.
• Your personal data may not be safe
• You put yourself at risk of cyber bullying
• You should be over 16 to use it anyway
• You put yourself at risk of strangers contacting you
and sending you inappropriate content

Prepared by Keano and Marquis
What is Instagram
• Instagram is an online mobile
photo-sharing, video-sharing and
social networking service that
enables its users to take pictures
and videos, and share them on a
variety of social networking
platforms, such as Facebook,
Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.
AGAIN, YOU MUST BE 13 OR OVER TO GO ON INSTAGRAM!
27
When you are old enough to use Instagram, here are
some tips to help you use it safely…
– 1. Privacy Settings
There are privacy settings on Instagram that allow you to
determine who follows you. With privacy settings, sending out a
request is the only way to become a follower of someone. This
way is a lot safer than having a public profile because only those
who you approve to follow you can see your pictures. Privacy
settings also keep away unwanted followers because everyone
who wants to follow you has to go through your dashboard and be
approved by you. Without Privacy Settings on, it isn’t only your
followers who can see your picture. Anyone can search your
profile and find your pictures and profile if you don’t have Privacy
Settings on.
28
– 2. Profile Appearance
Some people who are either oblivious or think they are invincible to
online harassment or tracking often have their profile picture set to
one of their face. This can be dangerous because if your first name
and (at extreme times) your last name are on your profile, creepy
people can easily do a Google search and find where you live, your
age, what school you go to, where you work, your parents, your
spouse, your current location. They can do all of this with only your
first and last name. This goes for any social networking site, but
especially one with the option for pictures like Facebook and
Instagram. My recommendation is not to use a picture of yourself for
your profile.
29
– 3. Location Share
There is a feature on Instagram where you can share the
location of where you took the picture. If you choose this
setting, you can tag your picture to anything you want, but if
you click on that location once the post is up, the app brings
you to a map and a small dot exactly where you were when
you took the picture, down to a grid. To ensure safety, turn
off location settings on the app in the settings on your
device or phone.
30
– 4. Following and Followers
As I mentioned in tip 1, with the Privacy Settings on, people can
follow you without having to be approved (although you can block
someone once you’ve accepted them).
If you do an excess amount of “Following” it can be bad. You could
look like an attention seeker and you’re putting yourself on someone
else’s radar by following them. More following leads to more
followers. This can lead to more people seeing you and anything you
put out there. The worst part is that someone watching could be
pretending to be someone else completely and this could be really
dangerous. You never know on the Internet.
31
– 5. Ask Your Parents to Help You
– If you’re on Instagram, whether you are a twelve year old or a
teenager, make sure that you reach out to your parents to help keep
you safe. One way is they can check your account. For example, you
could give your mum and dad your iPad so that they can check what
you’ve been posting, maybe once a week. If they see something that
they don’t like, then they can get you to take it down. Remember,
think before you post, and judge what you should be posting and what
you should keep to yourself.
– Having your parents check your device might be annoying or make
you feel like you’re being controlled, but if something is wrong, it’s
better to have your parents know about it and have them there to help
you.
1.) Login in to your Instagram account.
2.) Go to your profile by touching the button on the
lower right-hand corner.
3.) Tap the "Edit Your Profile" button near your profile
picture.
4.) Look for the "Photos are Private" box (near the
bottom for iPhone/iPad).
5.) Switch to On or check the box. Then press "Done" in
the top right-hand corner.
6.) Upon clicking, Instagram will ask for confirmation.
Confirm it by clicking “yes”.
7.) Hurray! Your Instagram Photos are now private.
7 SIMPLE STEPS TO FOR MAKING YOUR INSTAGRAM PHOTOS PRIVATE
Being safe on Snap chat
Tamia presents
What is Snap chat?
Snap chat is one of the world’s most famous
chat groups where people take photos and
videos and share them with other people.
The risks of using Snap chat
Users on snap chat sometimes share some
inappropriate pictures to their friends such as
unclothed and pictures with rude stuff. You are
also at risk of people hacking your account -
you could be the next victim.
Minimum age on snapchat
Just in case parents did not know there is a
minimum age, well there is. The minimum age
on snap chat is 13 years old. Even though it
might ask you for your date of birth and age, it
won’t let you add any friends or share videos
with anyone if you are under the minimum age
so there is no point in using it anyway if you
aren’t 13. WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE OLD
ENOUGH!
How to stay safe on this app
1) Only take appropriate photos. Remember that people can take
screenshots of any Snap you send them, and save it to their camera roll
forever. Also, remember that you never know who your friend will be
with when they open your Snap chat, so make sure that you do not send
private information!
2) Only Snap chat people you have met personally.
3) Edit your privacy settings so that only people you know can send you
Snaps. Do this by…
1. Opening Snap chat.
2. Clicking on the square button in the lower left and then clicking the gear
button on the page that appears.
3. Tapping "Receive Snaps from..." and ensure that "My Friends" is selected.
How To Stay safe On Youtube
Stay Safe…
BY CHRIS
Introduction
● Now I going to be concentrating on
YouTube and what age you should be and
apps you can download to cut off bad
words on YouTube.
Thank You :-)!
What is YouTube?
● VIDEO SHARING SITE WHERE OTHERS CAN
COMMENT ON VIDEOS THAT HAVE BEEN
UPLOADED.
According to YouTube’s online fact sheet:
● 2 billion videos are watched every day!
● Every 60 seconds, 24 hours of video is uploaded
(bringing the total number of videos uploaded each
day to the hundreds-of-thousands mark).
● 51% of YouTube users visit at least once per week.
What are the potential dangers of using YouTube?
● Lots of inappropriate videos are posted that you
would not want your child to be watching.
● People can leave inappropriate comments and links
that are not filtered so you have access to bad
language and potential ‘trolling’
● If you have your own account and are uploading
videos, if you don’t adjust your settings others can
comment and may say nasty and horrible things
about your video.
● You may be giving away personal information about
yourself and therefore putting yourself in danger.
Alternatives (e.g. Education YouTube)
• Education YouTube is similar to YouTube
but more safe for your child to use.
• If they try and look for something not
appropriate for them it will come up with
something educational so your child
won’t watch something that is
inappropriate.
Quiet Tube
• To watch web videos without the comments and other
distractions just drag the quiet tube button to your
browser's bookmarks bar (found at www.quiettube.com).
Then drag the quiet tube button into the address bar.
(DRAG BUTTON INTO ADDRESS BAR)
STEP 1
STEP 2
HEY PRESTO!
How to delete the comments
1.Find the comment you want to remove. You can remove other people's comments on any video
if you feel like the comment is spam, harassment, or illegal.
2.Click the small triangle on the right side of the comment. The button will only appear when
you hover your mouse cursor over the comment.
3.Remove the comment. Click "Remove" to remove the comment from your video. You can click the
"Undo" button if you accidentally removed the wrong comment.
4.Report a user. If there is a user on your channel that is harassing others or linking to
illegal content, you can report that person from the same menu that you would use to
delete a comment. Select "Report spam or abuse" and then choose the option that
best matches the bad behavior.
5.Ban a user. If you're sick of a user causing trouble for your channel, you can ban that
person from the same menu. Select "Ban from channel". All comments from that user
will be hidden automatically.
6.Log out and log back in if you don't see the "Remove" option. Sometimes you
may not see the full menu when you click the arrow next to the comment you want to
remove. Logging out and in usually fixes this issue.
● Click your profile image in the upper-right corner.
● Click the "Sign out" button.
● Sign back in with your Google account.
Summary
To have a YouTube account you need a Google+ account. To
have one of these you should be at least 13.
If you do upload videos to YouTube, DO NOT reveal any
personal information such as your name, age or address.
Use an avatar rather than your own photo as your profile
image. An avatar is a cartoon image used to represent you.
Adjust your settings to help you keep safe.
Type the word “quiet” in front of a YouTube address
to filter out the comments.
Look to use age appropriate educational alternatives such as
Youtube Education or Schools Tube.
MR EDMONDSON
• The most used social network is Instagram, followed by WhatsApp.
Facebook is fifth
• 20% of people asked have seen ‘rude’ online images
• 67% said that their parents do not always know what they are doing
online
• The e-safety issue that affects children and young people most
is cyber bullying
• Almost half of those who make friends with people online go on to
meet them in real life
• Girls access the internet through their phones much more
than boys (35% compared to 20%)

  • 22. 1. WhatsApp's guidelines state quite clearly no child under the age of 16 should be downloading or using the app. 2. Whatsapp is the world’s most popular messaging app but almost failed before it even started. FACTS…
  • 23. Social Networking • Never ever under any circumstances put your full address on your site. • It’s a very good idea to use a nickname online- because your friends will know your nickname so they’ll know it’s you. • Always put your real age on your site- if you lie and say your older adults may try to contact you . • It’s not a very good idea to put your mobile number on your site- anyways your real friends will already know it. • By the way all this information was originally found on the ‘Think u know’ website.
  • 24. The dangers of using Whatsapp. • Your personal data may not be safe • You put yourself at risk of cyber bullying • You should be over 16 to use it anyway • You put yourself at risk of strangers contacting you and sending you inappropriate content By Waleed
  • 26. What is Instagram • Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. AGAIN, YOU MUST BE 13 OR OVER TO GO ON INSTAGRAM!
  • 27. 27 When you are old enough to use Instagram, here are some tips to help you use it safely… – 1. Privacy Settings There are privacy settings on Instagram that allow you to determine who follows you. With privacy settings, sending out a request is the only way to become a follower of someone. This way is a lot safer than having a public profile because only those who you approve to follow you can see your pictures. Privacy settings also keep away unwanted followers because everyone who wants to follow you has to go through your dashboard and be approved by you. Without Privacy Settings on, it isn’t only your followers who can see your picture. Anyone can search your profile and find your pictures and profile if you don’t have Privacy Settings on.
  • 28. 28 – 2. Profile Appearance Some people who are either oblivious or think they are invincible to online harassment or tracking often have their profile picture set to one of their face. This can be dangerous because if your first name and (at extreme times) your last name are on your profile, creepy people can easily do a Google search and find where you live, your age, what school you go to, where you work, your parents, your spouse, your current location. They can do all of this with only your first and last name. This goes for any social networking site, but especially one with the option for pictures like Facebook and Instagram. My recommendation is not to use a picture of yourself for your profile.
  • 29. 29 – 3. Location Share There is a feature on Instagram where you can share the location of where you took the picture. If you choose this setting, you can tag your picture to anything you want, but if you click on that location once the post is up, the app brings you to a map and a small dot exactly where you were when you took the picture, down to a grid. To ensure safety, turn off location settings on the app in the settings on your device or phone.
  • 30. 30 – 4. Following and Followers As I mentioned in tip 1, with the Privacy Settings on, people can follow you without having to be approved (although you can block someone once you’ve accepted them). If you do an excess amount of “Following” it can be bad. You could look like an attention seeker and you’re putting yourself on someone else’s radar by following them. More following leads to more followers. This can lead to more people seeing you and anything you put out there. The worst part is that someone watching could be pretending to be someone else completely and this could be really dangerous. You never know on the Internet.
  • 31. 31 – 5. Ask Your Parents to Help You – If you’re on Instagram, whether you are a twelve year old or a teenager, make sure that you reach out to your parents to help keep you safe. One way is they can check your account. For example, you could give your mum and dad your iPad so that they can check what you’ve been posting, maybe once a week. If they see something that they don’t like, then they can get you to take it down. Remember, think before you post, and judge what you should be posting and what you should keep to yourself. – Having your parents check your device might be annoying or make you feel like you’re being controlled, but if something is wrong, it’s better to have your parents know about it and have them there to help you.

  • 33. Being safe on Snap chat Tamia presents
  • 34. What is Snap chat? Snap chat is one of the world’s most famous chat groups where people take photos and videos and share them with other people.
  • 35. The risks of using Snap chat Users on snap chat sometimes share some inappropriate pictures to their friends such as unclothed and pictures with rude stuff. You are also at risk of people hacking your account - you could be the next victim.
  • 36. Minimum age on snapchat Just in case parents did not know there is a minimum age, well there is. The minimum age on snap chat is 13 years old. Even though it might ask you for your date of birth and age, it won’t let you add any friends or share videos with anyone if you are under the minimum age so there is no point in using it anyway if you aren’t 13. WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH!
  • 37. How to stay safe on this app 1) Only take appropriate photos. Remember that people can take screenshots of any Snap you send them, and save it to their camera roll forever. Also, remember that you never know who your friend will be with when they open your Snap chat, so make sure that you do not send private information! 2) Only Snap chat people you have met personally. 3) Edit your privacy settings so that only people you know can send you Snaps. Do this by… 1. Opening Snap chat. 2. Clicking on the square button in the lower left and then clicking the gear button on the page that appears. 3. Tapping "Receive Snaps from..." and ensure that "My Friends" is selected.
  • 38. How To Stay safe On Youtube Stay Safe… BY CHRIS
  • 39. Introduction ● Now I going to be concentrating on YouTube and what age you should be and apps you can download to cut off bad words on YouTube. Thank You :-)!
  • 40. What is YouTube? ● VIDEO SHARING SITE WHERE OTHERS CAN COMMENT ON VIDEOS THAT HAVE BEEN UPLOADED. According to YouTube’s online fact sheet: ● 2 billion videos are watched every day! ● Every 60 seconds, 24 hours of video is uploaded (bringing the total number of videos uploaded each day to the hundreds-of-thousands mark). ● 51% of YouTube users visit at least once per week.
  • 41. What are the potential dangers of using YouTube? ● Lots of inappropriate videos are posted that you would not want your child to be watching. ● People can leave inappropriate comments and links that are not filtered so you have access to bad language and potential ‘trolling’ ● If you have your own account and are uploading videos, if you don’t adjust your settings others can comment and may say nasty and horrible things about your video. ● You may be giving away personal information about yourself and therefore putting yourself in danger.
  • 42. Alternatives (e.g. Education YouTube) • Education YouTube is similar to YouTube but more safe for your child to use. • If they try and look for something not appropriate for them it will come up with something educational so your child won’t watch something that is inappropriate.
  • 43. Quiet Tube • To watch web videos without the comments and other distractions just drag the quiet tube button to your browser's bookmarks bar (found at www.quiettube.com). Then drag the quiet tube button into the address bar. (DRAG BUTTON INTO ADDRESS BAR) STEP 1 STEP 2 HEY PRESTO! NO COMMENTS
  • 44. How to delete the comments 1.Find the comment you want to remove. You can remove other people's comments on any video if you feel like the comment is spam, harassment, or illegal. 2.Click the small triangle on the right side of the comment. The button will only appear when you hover your mouse cursor over the comment. 3.Remove the comment. Click "Remove" to remove the comment from your video. You can click the "Undo" button if you accidentally removed the wrong comment. 4.Report a user. If there is a user on your channel that is harassing others or linking to illegal content, you can report that person from the same menu that you would use to delete a comment. Select "Report spam or abuse" and then choose the option that best matches the bad behavior. 5.Ban a user. If you're sick of a user causing trouble for your channel, you can ban that person from the same menu. Select "Ban from channel". All comments from that user will be hidden automatically. 6.Log out and log back in if you don't see the "Remove" option. Sometimes you may not see the full menu when you click the arrow next to the comment you want to remove. Logging out and in usually fixes this issue. ● Click your profile image in the upper-right corner. ● Click the "Sign out" button. ● Sign back in with your Google account.
  • 45. Summary To have a YouTube account you need a Google+ account. To have one of these you should be at least 13. If you do upload videos to YouTube, DO NOT reveal any personal information such as your name, age or address. Use an avatar rather than your own photo as your profile image. An avatar is a cartoon image used to represent you. Adjust your settings to help you keep safe. Type the word “quiet” in front of a YouTube address to filter out the comments. Look to use age appropriate educational alternatives such as Youtube Education or Schools Tube.
