4. TYPES OF COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The subject matter for commercial photography
overlaps with other kinds of photography, but what
makes commercial photography different is how the
images are designed and used. Commercial
photography is less about self-expression and more
about meeting the needs of the client.

5. PLANNING A SHOOT
Stage 1
Start by taking roles needed for a commercial shoot
(photographer, stylist, client) 3 to 4 in a group.
Identify a mentor for the group that will act as the
art director.
Document the process.
Stage 2
Identify the clients needs and the product and
advertisement to be made.
Your clients for each group will receive a product
that must be advertised with specs and information
about each specific job. This is called the creative
brief.
You will need to bring from home that product. Any
one from the group could bring in the prop.
6. PLANNING A SHOOT CONTINUED.
Stage 3
Set up your product to be photographed.
Use a three-point lighting system see using light
modifiers handout.
Get several viewpoints Close, far, Above, ¾, detail
Use white seamless for the backdrop you will be
preforming a knock-out to place this product into an
advertisement.
Use a tripod shoot at ƒ8 –ƒ16 iso 200. You may want to
use Manuel or aperture priority mode
Stage 4
Post-production- input LR- Photoshop to PDF
output
Emphasis is the most important part of the design.
You will each get a copies of the final product the
art director has approved.
You must make a knock-out from one of the images
using the photoshop technique we learned in class.
