1. Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam
A Missile Man

2. INTRODUCTION
• A P J Abdul Kalam was born on
15 October 1931 in a Tamil
Muslim family
in Rameswaram in the Indian
state of Tamil Nadu. His father's
name was Jainulabudeen, a boat
owner, and his mother
Ashiamma, a housewife.
3. His childhood was from a
poor background and he
started working at an early
age to supplement his family's
income. After completing
school, Kalam distributed
newspapers to contribute
to his father's income.
4. In his school years he had
average grades but was
described as a bright
and hardworking student
who had a strong desire
to learn and spend hours
on his studies, especially
mathematics

EducatioN
• After graduating from MIT,
Kalam took up the position of
chief scientist at the
Aeronautical Development
Establishment of Defense
Research and Development
Organization (DRDO).
7. • However, the profile didn’t
appeal Kalam much who
shifted to the Indian Space
Research Organization
(ISRO) where he was the
project director of India's
first indigenous Satellite
Launch Vehicle.
9. Achievements
Kalam started his career by
designing a small helicopter for
the Indian Army. Joining ISRO
was one of Kalam's biggest
achievements in life and he is said
to have found himself when he
started to work on the SLV
project.
10. • During the period between
the 1970s and 1990s,
Kalam made an effort to
develop the Polar
SLV and SLV-III
projects, both of
which proved to
be success.
11. • Kalam played a
major part in
developing many
missiles under the
mission including
Agni, Prithvi,
Aakash, Nag etc.
• He also
designed a
tablet PC for
health care
in rural
areas, which
was named
as "Kalam-
Raju Tablet".
• The Pokhran-II nuclear tests were
conducted during this period where he
played an intensive political and
technological role in 1998.

In his life he wrote two books:
A) Wings of fire
B) Ignited Minds
Both books were famous were
at international level. What
ever royalty he earned from
the sales of these books, he
donated that royalty amount
in NGOs.

24. Last Breath
He had been delivering a lecture at
the Indian Institute of
Management in Shillong when he
collapsed and suffered cardiac
arrest. He was rushed to
the Bethany hospital where he
passed on…….
