The Ajanta Caves in India contain 32 grottos carved into basalt rock hills over thousands of years using only chisels and hammers. The caves contain wonderfully decorated walls and ceilings with colorful paintings that are over 1500 years old, depicting realistic expressions and emotions. Some caves served as Viharas or monasteries for monks, containing rooms and rock-cut beds, while others were Chaityas or temples similar to Christian cathedrals. It is remarkable that the skilled artisans created these wonders using only simple tools.
