What Is Your Home Care Agency Doing to Retain Your Best Employees?

  1. 1. What Is Your Home Care Agency Doing to Retain Your Best Employees? Every year home care agencies spend thousands of dollars recruiting and replacing their staff members. While it is an ongoing issue for all home care agencies, the extent and degree of time and expenditure can be decreased. Employees within the home care setting often quit for similar reasons—whether it’s a boss who is not supportive and empowering, or a lack of opportunity or appreciation, it’s critical that you identify the reasons staff are quitting and use that information to establish a plan that retains your best employees, reduces turnover, and simultaneously increases your revenue. Create a Positive Environment A positive work environment keeps employees happy and excited about working for your home care agency. If your staff doesn’t feel like they have support or a quality position within your agency, or there is a general negative stigma within your business, you’ll have a hard time retaining them. You can create a positive environment by holding management accountable for employee satisfaction and rewarding employees for their dedication. For example, offer tenure awards at one, five, and ten-‐year marks. Offer Opportunities to Move Forward Employees who feel stagnant in their job or feel as though they have no chance for advancement will not stick around for very long. Develop a system within your agency that allows employees to advance in their career, and create an elite team tiered system tied to increased experience and education. While this is easier with entry-‐level positions, there is still a way to help advance non-‐entry level positions, too. Opportunities do not just have to be by
  2. 2. job title either. You can provide your employees with an abundance of continuing education opportunities, and then reward them with a bonus or higher pay for increasing their own education within their field. You should also establish specialty services that serve the needs of your target market, such as Alzheimer’s care, diabetes care, and COPD care. Support employees and allow them to attend advanced training so that they can further themselves within the specialty field. In addition to increasing employee satisfaction and reducing turnover rates, it will also benefit your agency in the long run. As the home care industry continues to evolve, employees who are constantly training and staying educated will be a step ahead of the industry—making your agency more competitive. Stay in Touch Conduct regular employee surveys to stay in touch with what is important to them. Once you know what is driving your staff to come to work and what makes them want to keep coming back, you can enhance and extend those perceived benefits to all staff. Once you know this information you can also use it in your recruiting ads and campaigns. Establish a Community Within Your Agency Your employees should feel as though they’re part of a community. Keep the community strong by holding regular staff meetings (at least on a quarterly basis). Your employees, regardless of how many you have, should know one another. Consider creating an employee spotlight in monthly newsletters, celebrating staff member birthdays, or even reading out letters of praise when one employee excels in his or her position. Conduct Exit Interviews In the event that you still lose an employee, conduct an exit interview to find out why he or she is leaving and where you can improve. Exit interviews give you key information and insights, such as ways to boost morale, how to improve interactions between management and staff, and how to better provide training opportunities.
