1. It is too early to know what will really happen while Mr Trump is
president. His thinking and plans are so different from what people are
used to, they are naturally worried. Making big changes to the way a
country works is not easy and will take time. Here are three things you
can do which might help you understand more about politics.
President
United States
Why Some People Worry
What Can You Do?
of
the
Donald Trump is the 45th president of the United States. His
victory surprised many as he is not a politician. He was able to
persuade enough voters that he has the attitude, knowledge,
and judgment to be president. The new president and his team
will start work on January 20, 2017 and they will have
to work hard to bring their country together after a
negative political campaign. Millions of Americans are
struggling to make ends meet. They wanted change and many
thought that Mr Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, represented
everything they had come to dislike about their politicians.
Some people in and outside of America worry that Donald Trump’s views will
influence others to behave badly to fellow human beings, animals and nature.
Candidate
noun: a person who is
running for an elected
position or competing
for a job
Ballot
noun: a list of
candidates and
proposals that citizens
use to vote. The ballot
may be on paper, or on
the Internet.
Political Campaign
noun: Doing things
like giving speeches,
meeting voters, and
debating against
opponents with the aim
of winning more votes.
Political Party
noun: A group with
the same ideas about
how a country should
be run. The main U.S.
political parties are the
Democrats and the
Republicans.
Climate Change
Donald Trump does not agree
with leading scientists that he
world’s climate is changing
because of humans.
Diplomats and climate
negotiators are discussing
steps needed to carry out the
Paris climate agreement, which
was negotiated in 2015. They
are worried Mr. Trump will try
to take the United States out
of the agreement.
Immigration
Mr. Trump promised to build
a wall across the Southwest
border of the USA with Mexico
to stop people entering the
USA illegally. He said that he
will deport about two million
immigrants with criminal
records. He has also said
he will create a register of
Muslims in the USA.
These ideas make people
suspicious and worried.
Economics
Mr. Trump promised to trade
less with other nations and to
reduce taxes for US citizens at
the same time. He says making
more things in America is
better for America. But the
world has been making and
selling things together for a
long time.
People are not sure how the
world’s economy will do if this
happens.
Read newspapers
They have a lot of
information about
what’s happening
around the world.
The more you know,
the easier it will
be to make good
decisions.
Discuss things
Talk to your friends
so you all can make
your own minds
up about what to
do. Talk with your
parents or your
teacher until it feels
better.
Ask questions
Ask your grown up
to explain, if you
don’t understand
anything you read
and see, or if it is
upsetting.
