Can everyone see my screen and have audio?This webinar is about the basics of cloud computing for construction companies, including the financial considerations.We will mention Timberline software in the presentation as it relates to hosting on the cloud, but most of the information applies to other applications like Quickbooks or Sage Master Builder as well. Do we have anyone with us who is not a Sage Timberline user? If you are not a Timberline user please stay with us. Please feel free to ask questions during the webinar. - What is the Cloud?
- For this presentation I’d like to use a very simple definition. There are varieties of cloud computing: private clouds, public clouds, in-house clouds and outsourced clouds. We will be talking about outsourced, also called hosting.
- Going on the cloud doesn’t have to change the way you work. You can set it up to access your existing accounting applications, integrate them with your email and Outlook and do everything else you are currently doing.
- The Cloud is a game changer. Like cars transformed the transportation industry, Cloud computing is a disruptive technology that will forever change the way software is delivered and used.When PC’s were introduced I was selling coke-machine-size mini-computers with hard drives as big as washing machines. Greg here is too young to relate to that.
- With the Cloud you are using other people’s servers so you don’t have the upfront expense of buying or upgrading expensive servers to host your construction applications.You also end up with a lower TCO for your applications because of reduced IT maintenance. You deal with fewer IT problems giving you more time to focus on what you do best. Example: Architects sitting idle at $100/hr.Budgeting is easier because you know what your IT expense will be each month. It’s a utility model for IT.Reducing your IT budget and fewer IT headaches makes your life better.
- Economies of scale are realized at the cloud data center. The savings, realized from shared banks of servers and fewer IT experts, are passed along to you.You only pay for the resources you need today so you don’t have to buy equipment to meet future needs. There’s no contract, just a monthly payment.You’re not paying interest on equipment leases.At $0.12 per KWH, a 500 W server adds a fair amount to your electrical bill.You’re doing fewer software upgrades. Backups are done automatically at the data center.And, the data center keeps everything up and running. Your IT support person will wonder why you aren’t calling him as often. - Adoption of cloud technology by construction companies has passed the innovators and early adopters stage. It is very much in the plans of the early majority.Q: What are people you know in the construction industry saying about cloud computing?
- Cloud computing and the construction industry fit well together. Traditionally, companies would invest a lot of money up front in servers and workstations keeping in mind what their needs will be in 3-5 years. With the Cloud, you can invest only in the computing power you need currently. You can start small and then expand as you get more jobs and hire more people. It is almost like buying out a construction job, where you buy only materials for the job and keep no inventory. Setting up of new users or expanding your hard-drive space can be done in minutes. It’s a lot easier than formatting a workstation the traditional way.If you are in construction, you know you have to go where the work is. If your office applications are hosted on the cloud, that means you have access to them anywhere you have an internet connection, including your mobile devices and tablets.
- TimberCloud is our name for hosting your Sage Timberline (or other) software at a remote data center or “the cloud.” It began when some of our customers were interested in a hosted solution for Sage Timberline. We worked with Trapp Online to host a few Timberline customers on their servers and felt it was good idea to share how that works with other customers. Now we have a partnership with Trapponline to offer TimberCloud Hosting Services to all of our customers, and other companies, as well.Greg, about how many customers do you currently host at your data Center? And how many of those are on Sage Timberline?
- Timberline is a client/server application that shares the workload of processing between your server and your workstation. Your Server or Workstation has to meet minimum requirements to load and run Timberline smoothly. With TimberCloud, all of the processing is done on the server, so you don’t need to keep several workstations healthy enough run Timberline. You don’t even need the workstation installation of Timberline so you save money and time upgrading fewer computers. A major upgrade, for example (upgrading from 9.6 to 9.7) can typically take 45 min to 1 hour to upgrade each workstation. Again with the cloud, you are just upgrading the server.You may need to do back ups for upgrades and other special situations, but with the cloud, your data is continually backed up, reducing the number of backups you need to do. - Having your data at a cloud data center is probably more reliable and secure than your office. Other companies cannot see or gain access to your data. And there is no loss of functionality.Data centers are designed and built to protect computers and data with the highest security.Greg, why is Arizona a good place for a data center?Your data is safe in case of a disaster. They have large backup generators in the case there is a power outage.Greg, would you like to comment on the security of your data center and tell us a little about encryption, etc.? Do you have any certifications? (SAAS 70 Type 2, SSAESOC-16 Compliant, PCI Compliant)Q: Does anyone have any other concerns about hosting you applications and data on TimberCloud?
- Besides the financial considerations there are other benefits to using TimberCloud.For example, if you or another employee need to get some work done at home or on vacation. Or being able to check an order, a payment or a report from the job site can be a big timesaver.You won’t see your IT person as often.You can adapt easily to changes in staff and workload.The learning curve is very short. If you can use email, you can use TimberCloud.Comment on Coaction Group’s learning curve, “Nothing new to learn”.
- Sage Construction Anywhere and TimberCloud complement each other to provide you with a complete cloud solution now and in the future. Sage’s announced cloud strategy is to not replace legacy systems with cloud applications but to add new operational functionality on the cloud.So, it makes perfect sense to go with TimberCloud now and add Construction Anywhere functionality as it becomes available.Sage Construction Anywhere functions as the front end where TimberCloud handles the back office. Together they make a complete cloud solution.
- Construction Anywhere will eventually work with all Sage CRE platforms. Operational functionality will be added over time.Your existing applications will continue to reside in-house or on TimberCloud.
