homerooms worked very hard before,
during, and after the sale to make
sure that there were plenty of items to
sale that could raise money for local
charities.
According to several interviews,
some students stated that they liked
the second anniversary more than the
first. “It is well-organized, enjoyable,
and fun at the same time”, stated one
happy high school student.
The event was also reported on in
local media. Gu-Su-Wan-Bao, which
is an online newspaper link featured
“Ticket to the Future”
on WeChat, shared an interesting
idea in one of its articles . . .
“The school is new to the world as
the students are new to the school. It
is very amazing to see how the school,
and students currently studying here,
can live and grow with each other,
influencing and making better of
each other.”
Kang Chiao went through a lot
this year, and so did we. The school
is developing its own unique culture
and creating more and more exciting
events. Now let us look forward to the
third anniversary !

Sometimes ,we have a relaxation un-

may be served in dishes, for eating with
a spoon, or in cones, which are licked.
Ice cream may be served with other des-

flavours, and add waffles sometimes.
Also, if you like ice-cream, you can
have an palatable ice-cream chaffy dish.
Additionally, chocolate sauce can be add-

Happy birthday Kang Chiao!
On the 7th of May our beloved
Kang Chiao International School
celebrated its second anniversary
here in Huaqiao, East China.
The bilingual department was
responsible for organizing and spon-
soring this year’s annual event. As
such, the school’s second anniversa-
ry celebration was a combination of
sports competition, performing arts,
and charity fair.
All teachers, staff, students, and
many parents, attended this year’s
grand anniversary, and most of them
seemed to have a great time. It is be-
ing said that the students especially
enjoyed the relays, where homeroom
10C eventually claimed the first prize
of the day. Some of the attendees said
that they liked the charity fair the
most because there were all kinds of
tasty food and fancy decorations
The first week of May, here at Kang
Chiao, was a challenging experience for
many of the teachers of this fine school.
We were frequently challenged to
accept the many and varied displays of
kindness and gratitude that were be-
stowed upon us. According to various
reports from among my colleagues, I was
not the only teacher who had to fight back
tears on more than one occasion whilst
being presented with some expression of
gratitude from one of my students.
Of course, there were other types
of challenges during the week of Teach-
er Appreciation, such as arriving at the
scene of the supposed “regular” monthly
faculty meeting, and being greeted by a
sensational display of cakes and bever-
ages, apparently all of which were meant
for us !?! Wow ~ yummy ! What followed
this fabulous feast was equally as tasty
and delightful; however, I do not want to
spoil the surprise (you can read about it
on page 4 ).
Granted, during the wonderful week
of Appreciation there were also the daily
challenges of teaching and facilitating and
coordinating and writing and speaking
and listening and monitoring and focal-
izing and on and on and on . . .
However, at the end of the day, and
the end of the week, I think all us Teach-
ers, at some point, even if only for a wee
moment, experience that feeling of deeply
pervasive gratitude and contentment for
being granted the magickal opportunity
to be such a vital, and often pivotal part,
of a young person’s journey in life. I know
from my experience, I have felt that feel-
ing many, many times.
The truth of the matter is, that what
inspired all of us teachers to get started on
this mad, crazy journey of teaching was
that somewhere along the path of our
youth there was that one teacher, or
possibly a few, who transformed our
world, and fueled our future . . .
In that spirit, I would like to name
just a few; Mrs. Randall, Mrs. McCue, Mr.
Borowski, Mr. Crittenden, Mr. Ciccaci,
Mr. Kralik, Mr. Darrah, and Dr. Thomas.
Thank you !

University Preparation
ent kinds of questions on the website,
youwill get at least one university that is
suitable for all of your needs. The next
step is to click on the university’s official
website and research more details about
the school as well as the requirements
for the university’s application process.
Moreover, every school creates its own
virtual model online, and you can “visit”
anywhere on its campus that you wish
simply by engaging with the virtual portal
of the university. But, the circumscription
of this website does not include every
university in the world, the site is only for
United States’ universities.
The other advantage of www.college-
board.com is that it shows the latest edu-
cational news about students all over the
world. For example, the rules of the SAT
have been reformed, so it is necessary for
students to gather information to com-
pare or contrast the current SAT and the
previous one, especially for foreign stu-
dents. Moreover, there is a special column
for AP courses, and all the test informa-
tion is included so that you can prepare
for the tests in May as well.
In the future I intend to intro-
duce different kinds of scholarships and
how to use them while you are doing your
application. Further, Ms Tina Yin and I
will be cooperating in the process of in-
troducing to you the most perfect and
prettiest universities around the world.
If you keep preparing, you will
be able to create an opportunity to get
into your idol university. So try your best!
University is waiting for you, and eventu-
ally getting into a Top 100 University will
not be a dream anymore.
“GPA”, “TOEFL”, “SAT” and “Top 100
University” are the heavy words resound-
ing in Grade 11 students’ minds. Facing
the books which pile like a mountain and
onerous pressure; how can they work out
the dilemma? What kind of courses do they
need to take? How will they manage their
time? Do you want to know the secret or
special ways to help you study? Kang Chiao
International School (KCIS) reporter made
a special interview on student “Ms. Sea”.
Let’s come to her world.
“Ms. Sea” is one of the Grade 11 students
who is a tall, slim and pretty girl known for
her strong study ability and outstanding re-
sult. Some students describe her as a “Study
Chief” since she got a stable, high GPA
and excellent TOEFL score. How can she
achieve this study level? Here are the things
that she shares with other students.
“Ms. Sea” said: “I have an active study be-
havior.” Active is an important element that
students need to have. The most common
problem among students in class behavior
is that they are too quiet. Some teachers are
having trouble with teaching students be-
cause they want to have more interaction
with students during the classes so that stu-
dents could learn better.
“Being active can not only train you to
be brave and have a good impression on
teacher, but also being active can help you
remember the knowledge more quickly
during classes, when you review it you can
think about what you did in class.” said Ms.
Sea. Besides being active, pre-read is essen-
tial to study as well.
“In order to participate actively in class, I
always pre-read the chapter. This could help
me to have ideas about what teacher want
to teach us. The knowledge I gain through
the class will more than not prepare.” The
two efficient ways to improve your study are
pre-read and active. Have you use it?
Everyone has at least eight courses in
Kang Chiao. Balancing each course seems
a difficult thing. Which courses do you like
most? Which one do you have trouble with?
“Ms. Sea” also has the answer to these two
questions. “I like Spanish the most,” said
by “Ms.Sea”, “Spanish teacher creates many
activities for students; students will not feel
bored and learn a lot of things at the main
time.” From what “Ms. Sea” said we can
know that students need to suitable for dif-
ferent teaching ways from different teach-
ers. Although it may feels difficult at first,
adaption is the necessary skill that students
must learn.
A lot of Grade 11 students have problems
of understanding on AP Environmental
Science, same as “Ms.Sea”. Environmental
Science has a lot of proper vocabulary and
science is very complex. Each class has a
bunch of information to learn. In another
hand, teaching through the PPT makes a
short term memory. The way to solve this
problem is to improve the vocabulary in the
free time, especially through the reading.
Do not find the definition of the word when
you see it, highlight it and find the defini-
tion when you finish reading that para-
graph. You can not only learn the vocabu-
lary, but also enhance the reading skills.
Study ways will influence the learning
of students. Here are some ways to improve
your study: 1) Use effective study tech-
niques (Survey, Question, Read, Recite and
Review). 2) Use THIEVES strategy to pre-
view the chapter (title, introduction, sub-
heading, first sentence of each paragraph,
visuals and vocabulary and chapter sum-
mary). 3) Highlight important details. 4)
Make flash cards to remember vocabulary
and take notes.
Study is a long journey for every-
one. It seems difficult to be a top student,
but finding a correct and suitable way of
study will help you to walk out the dilemma
of study. Although you need to overcome a
lot of difficulties, victory is always waiting
for you. Come on, Kang Chao students,
you can do it !
According to webometrics.info there
are nearly 25,000 ranked universities
around the world. However, you will only
be enrolled by one of them. So, when you
are choosing your future university, al-
ways remember these important things;
know your dream, get prepared, and most
importantly, follow your heart.
A few days ago, I talked with some of
my friends in the 10th grade, and to my
surprise, some of them have already start-
ed to prepare for taking the standard tests
that universities require, such as TOEFL
and SAT. Furthermore, they have gath-
ered a lot of information about universi-
ties that suit their personalities and their
dreams. Unfortunately, a few of them still
do not know how to prepare. To help stu-
dents properly prepare for the application
process, I recommend exploring the web-
site www.collegeboard.com .
The advantage of this particular web-
site is that it displays comprehensive in-
formation about individual colleges and
has a system that makes the application
process easier to complete. First of all, it
lists a lot of detailed questions that help
you focus on the information you need
to narrow your search and simplify your
process. For example, what size of univer-
sity do you prefer to be in? Either rural or
urban, in what kind of location would you
like to live? What major are you interest-
ed in pursuing ? How much will it cost to
study abroad.
After you are finished selecting differ-

Every year, universities and colleges
around the world offer a large number of
scholarships for international students.
Applying for the proper kind of schol-
arships is one of the most effective ways
to help scholars relief the expense of tu-
ition. However, before a student prepares
for scholarships, it is necessary for her
to know the information about different
genres of scholarship. Therefore, she can
choose the most appropriate one for her.
Many high school students have a
misconception about scholarships. They
assume that they are only available to
students with the top academic grades or
the most impressive sports medals. Ac-
tually, there are several different types of
scholarships for all kinds of students. The
key point is to know which type is most
available for a certain student, and how to
apply for it effectively. The most common
three types of scholarships are: Academic
Scholarships, Average Academic Perfor-
mance Scholarships, and Athletic Schol-
arships.
Academic scholarships are awarded to
outstanding students who have promi-
nent accomplishments in their academic
fields. Also, the students who apply not
only need to have top grades as a prereq-
uisite, but also the most impressive and
diverse records of extracurricular and
community activities.
Average Academic Performance Schol-
arships also consider about students’ ac-
ademic learning ability, but they usually
give more weight to the performance in
other activities and public service.
Besides, the other abilities such as the
leadership, cooperation of teamwork,
and critical thinking are taken into
consideration as well. (next column)
The Dilemna
of Study
To apply for the Athletic Scholarships,
students have to earn high achievements
in their field of sport. Athletic Scholar-
ships Awards are the easiest to decide who
receives the prize, but the competition
among the candidates is visible and fierce.
In general, if someone chooses the proper
scholarship for herself, then it can open
the door to many universities for her.
It is common for students to have com-
petition when they apply for the same
type of scholarship. Therefore, learning
some key strategies can be helpful in or-
der for students to prepare for the appli-
cation most effectively.
First of all, have a conversation with the
high school guidance counselor to make
sure what kind of scholarship best fits you
as a student. Second, do the research on
the official website of the certain univer-
sity to check for the qualification that are
needed, or the standard of it. Third, give
the administrators of the scholarship a
good impression with the application let-
ter, and remember to pay attention to the
deadline, or due date. Finally, prepare for
the personal interview, with the universi-
ty administrators, and stay organized and
focused during the interview.
While studying at university, students
need to pay for tuition, books, housing
and other expenses, so scholarships are a
good opportunity to relieve huge expen-
sive costs. As a result, any types of schol-
arship award are welcomed by students in
any grade. Be sure to have enough time
to prepare for the application of schol-
arships, and do not miss the due date.
Choosing the proper scholarship for you
is wise and has higher priority and chance
of success rather than just choosing the
one that offers the most money but needs
higher qualifications. Good Luck !
“Most Students have a mis-
conception about Scholarships.”
Mister Hu, Study Master
3 Secrets to the Successful Student
As the difficult value of courses in-
crease, Kang Chiao students’ pressures
increase too. Most students really can’t
find time to focus on their TOEFL or SAT,
because of their busy courses in school. It
is even difficult for them to achieve ex-
cellent grades. However, some students
in our school have great methods for
success in their studies. These methods
are formed by time management, group
study, and Khan Academy.
Time is one of the most important
parts of students’ lives. If they can manage
it well, they could make their daily lives
more meaningful. Last week, I got chance
to interview a famous student at Kang
Chiao named Mr. Hu, who is excellent at
both school courses and TOEFL.
According to Mr. Hu, time manage-
ment is also the key method to successful
study. As we all know, students, especially
Recently, many students in Kang Chiao
have taken Toefl, SAT and ACT exams; Addi-
tionally, some students are preparing for AP
exams in May. During the months leading
up to the exams, students need much prac-
tice to get well prepared. Consequently, how
students get enough power to persist and be
more confident becomes a considerable ques-
tion.
First of all, students can write an inspiring
sentence or a motto on a sticky note and then
stick it to their textbook and practice exam.
Although this is a very traditional strategy,
what can students add to the maxim?
Maybe they can construct a trea-
sure box and put the things they think are
valuable in it. They might may put pieces of
evidence that prove they have courage to pass
the hardest period of study, such as a award of
a long distant running competition
Another choice is to put a photo of people
who encourages students to fight for their
aim. It can be a picture of their friends, par-
ents or even teachers who help them and ex-
pect them to get a good score. Besides, they
may also add something that shows they have
already improved a lot during the past year
and that they have already become a better
person. In addition, students can also put the
biography of an idol that they really admire,
in this way they can learn the good qualities
from their idol, and it will encourage them
to persist. Last but not least, they shall write
down the name of fun activities that they
would enjoy after the exam.
The process of studying for exams
can be extremely long and boring, so some
students may give up, while others question
themselves and whether they will pass the
exam. However, if students follow the tips
above, it will help them to practice hard for
the exam, and finally receive a satisfied mark
to achieve their goal ! Jaiyo !
11th Grade students, are too busy to fo-
cus on their courses and TOEFL study at
the same time. Mr. Hu advised students to
create useful ways of time management to
attain more time for studies.
The first step is to make notes
or memos in order to prevent them from
forgetting their homework. With the little
memos, students can check their assign-
ments at any time, and then save time by
not having to ask about what is required
of them for homework.
The second step is to use leisure
time to do assignments. For example, the
morning self-study, the lunch self-study,
the evening self-study, even the resting
time after students return to dorms, these
leisure times are all useful times for study.
The last step is to distinguish
the importance of each assignment. Stu-
dents’ homework is formed by different
types of assignments for each subject. If
they detailedly understand how to use
which time to do which assignment, they

One belt one road was not given with
high expectations at first. In fact, many
students didn’t think much about it at
first. However, what was one belt one
road like?
Theteachers,includingMr.KK,claimed
that one belt one road was hard to create.
They said that all of the schedules were
hard to create and the work of listing the
restaurants was quite complicated, not to
mention that not every restaurant can fit
265 hungry students. Also, making sure
that they had ordered every single ticket
for every single student was complicated
and possibly mind-shattering.
In order to fit everyone in, they had to
either split the schedules, or take different
routes at times. And some students were
simply disobedient and obstinate. Some
students didn’t follow orders correctly,
most notably with the double-file line
rule and the table seating rule. Students
simply walked shoulder to shoulder, and
didn’t follow the person in front of them.
Some students even went to another place
in the line to talk to their friends. The line
order was chaotic in some classes, and
some homeroom teachers constantly had
to tell them to be in double-file line order.
In addition to those problems, some stu
dents argued against homeroom teachers
about the choices of Ms. Coco or Mr. KK.
It wasn’t just the teachers who faced
problems. Students also faced countless
problems in one belt one road. We had
sanitary problems, mostly because of the
continuous train trips we had to take. It
was no surprise that we all smelled like
public bathrooms after a train trip, be-
cause of the lack of showers in the trains.
In hotels, some bathrooms had problems
with the water system. My bathroom’s
sink plug was jammed, forcing my room-
mate and I to dump the dirty water down
a shower drain. Another problem we had
was the quality of the hotels. All hotels
only had 3 stars, making the quality less
desirable for us students, who probably
preferred five or four star hotels. Quality
problems included TVs, doors, and elec-
tricity problems. In a hotel in Kazakhstan,
my friend’s TV was flaming in his apart-
ment, signaling a fire alert. The school
told us to get out of the hotel. We had
many troubles with doors. The door of my
bathroom had probably broken its swivel,
so it had problem closing. Also, someone’s
door couldn’t even close at all ! In terms of
electrical problems, in one hotel, most of
the plugs were broken, so we couldn’t
charge our android devices for that night.
Despite the hardships, we 9st graders
had a great time. Even though there were
some small problems like suitcases or
lack of battery, we still had a great time.
Such entertainments included barbecue,
beautiful sights like lakes, and occasion-
al parties. We had to stay on buses every
day, sitting around for more than 5 hours,
but we still had a great time. We would
play truth or dare, or just simply listen to
music on our android devices. Occasion-
ally, we would gossip about romance or
tease others about any romantic relation-
ships. And when Mr. KK asked whether
they should apply any changes for the
8th graders, we all yelled out stuff that
would make the 8th graders miserable.
“No hotels!”-Polo Hsu, 9F. When asked if
we were tired, the answer was no. When
asked, “Do you want to go home?” the an-
swer was also no. We loved the trip; we
could hardly believe it when we realized
one belt one road was ending.
Overall, we the students there had a
good time. We loved the amount of atten-
tion that we students got from the locals,
and also the amount of attention from
performing. Also, the amount of sights
and activates intrigued us when we were
bored with nothing to do. None of us
wanted to leave one belt one road behind;
it was just so fun and interesting.

Kang Chiao Students Weigh in on Gaming
In this technological era ,video games become
the first choice for students and employees
to relax during their free time. However, this
phenomenon arouses a heated debate among
some people on whether video games help
people work more efficiently or make works
counterproductive? According to the interview
of some KCIS students and teachers on 6 ques-
tions, we will discover their views on this topic.
Q1&Q2: “Do you like playing video games
,What type of games do you like to play?
From the information that we got from
those questions ,we can found that students
have different characteristic , have different
views of games , most the interviewees inter-
ested in having fun by video games , even for
the interviewees that don’t like playing game
now , the used to playing video games . Also
, different people focused on different types of
game , according to Lisa Z , she likes drawing
and creating , so she like playing the game that
have great background drawing and most of
other people prefer the game that can play with
each other , because that will make a better re-
lationship by play the video games each other .
Q3. “If you have a chance to create a game
by yourself , which type of game would you like
to build , why?”
We build this question because most of the
people that play games or used to , they always
have one or serial different idea from the dif-
ferent parts of games , according to Lisa Z , she
think games need to have a great plot instead of
the fighting part in the game . Also, the degree
in a game also became one important part that
the creator need to consider , according to the
design of Marina G , she think how high the
degree of freedom is one of the parts that show
the level of a game , also , people may use all of
their bodies to play the games for exercise, in
the feature , video game may become a way to
do the fitness.
Q4: “What’s opinion about video games, how
are they good or bad?”
We came up with this question to judge stu-
dents’ value of video games and most inter-
viewees opinions are kind the same. For the
part of how you think video games are good,
they all mentioned that play games can relax
people’s mind and help release
Allowing for time management, group work
is also a good way to study. According to Mr.
Hu, he believed that great group study can also
help students save time and gain more knowl-
edge from the discussion. When students are
working together, they can avoid losing time of
focusing on just one question that they don’t
know. They can help each other to understand
the process of responding to questions and the
meaning of the texts. Also, everyone has dif-
ferent strengths of study, when they combine
those advantages together, they all can have a
better understanding of the study.
As well as the team work, Khan Academy is
more efficient to gain new information and re-
view knowledge points. According to Mr. Hu,
Khan Academy was extraordinarily advised as
a new study model for students. It is an educa-
tional organization which provides free online
education for everyone. This academy includes
many regions of education, such as Math, As-
tronomy, Medicine, Chemistry, and more. The
very best teachers are hired by the academy;
they provide the best teaching to the public.
Usually, it is pretty easy for students to un-
der-stand the knowledge in a very short time.
If students have any puzzled questions or they
want to review their knowledge points, they
can check these academy videos at any time.
Absolutely, it is very convenient and efficient.
Khan Academy not only helps students save
time, but also improves their grades. Mr. Hu
believes that school should encourage stu-
dents to watch the Khan Academy videos as
part of their homework in order to gain new
knowledge; and teachers should make students
do more practices and answer their questions
about texts in class. This new study model may
change the whole system of industrial educa-
tion. With this efficient method, students can
have big success with their study.
Time management, team work, and Khan
Academy are all important for students to
study efficiently. With these skills that Mr. Hu
suggests to students, they can attain more time,
and grasp more knowledge. He also hopes that
these methods will help make Kang Chiao stu-
dents have positive changes in their lives, and
lead them to success.
the pressure of study and work. There are also
interviewees that state another good idea. Ac-
cording to Kelly Chen, 10A, she said that games
can help you use your brain more. So no mat-
ter students like or dislike playing games, they
know how video games take advantages in peo-
ple’s life. However, they also state that games
can harass them when they are playing them.
Believe it or not, all the interviewers gave me
the same point that games may make you dwell
in it and you’ll spend too much time on it if you
do so. So, we know that video games are rapiers
that both help and disturb students.
Q5: Do you think games help you more or dis-
turb you more?
To follow the last question, we create this one
to give people ideas that whether students like
or dislike games more. The final answer from
those ten interviewees really shocked me. In
total, we get 6 of them like video games more,
2 of them hate sitting in front of the screen and
the other two state that it depends. This result is
not what I expected because all the time Kang-
Chiao is trying to pull students out of the game.
So we can tell that school can avoid students
playing games in classes but it can not avoid
students from loving games. What’s more, ac-
cording to a student in 10D, she says that she
hate those people that play games in classes,
but after school it’s free to play games.
Q6: Opinions on students that play games in
class.
Continuously, we want to hear how in-
terviewers treat the phenomenon on playing
games in classes. Guess what, all of them has
their own idea on this question. According
to a 10C student, she tells me that if DSA can
give students time to play video games, it may
decrease the number of students that play in
class. According to Cici Z, 9F, she says that all
the students who did that are lacking of self
control. Another impressive answer is from
Marina G, 10D, she says If you do not pay at-
tention to your teacher and do not do what you
should do because of the video game, you will
get problems that can not be solved by only a
little effort.
According to the answer of these six ques-
tions above , video have both advantages and
disadvantages, that can be a way that we relax
ourselves during the heavy school life, but if
you spend too much time gaming , that may
hurt your body and lower your ability to study
in the aerospace industry one day and
also studying this topic when he goes to
University. Will he change his mind? That
remains to be seen. However, we were
thoroughly impressed with his knowl-
edge of the aerospace industry, especially
Boeing, an airplane manufacturer, and
his participation in a research club to
learn more about basic engineering skills.
He even engages in high level reading in
his free time such an advanced level phys-
ics book entitled The Aerodynamics. So,
can this seemingly bright and ambitious
young man be labeled a monster? Is his
drive and ambition representative of all
middle school students here at KCIS? We
will leave it up to you, the reader, to de-
cide.
Next we interviewed Maggie, a middle
school student from international depart-
ment. It immediately became clear that
she is an extremely hardworking young
lady. Maggie joined athletics one year
ago and she practices very hard every
week, and she is currently the fastest girl
on the team. Maggie also learned to play
the guitar and Ukulele by practicing ev-
ery weekend with every free moment she
can spare and hope one day to be able to
play a range of wonderful songs. Maggie
is clearly an outstanding student in many
different aspects.
Our Middle School Students here at
KCIS have already seemed to become
synonymous with the words “annoying,
crazy, and ignorant.” They run in the
hallway, they yell like monsters, and they
play tricks on each other in school, all
day. However, is it fair to define them as
monsters of KCIS? Maybe we were one of
them not long ago? Perhaps there is an-
other, more kind and gentle side, to the
middle school students at KCIS.
It is important to remember that the
middle school students are a vital part
of Kang Chiao School, just as much as
everyone else; therefore, we have inter-
viewed several middle school students to
get their perspectives on life and to dispel
any misconceptions regarding these stu-
dents. We must determine whether or
not they are indeed monsters, or if they
are simply misunderstood.
Michael, a 7th grade student from the
bilingual department, is an energetic and
intellectually curious young man. We
first interviewed him during his Trom-
bone class, and while his focus should
have been on playing the instrument, all
he could think about was reaching for the
stars. He talked excitedly about working
Finally we interviewed Ethan, Mag-
gie’s classmate, the best trombone player
in school, and he was really fun to talk
to ! Ethan is one of the earliest youngest
Trombone players in the school and is
currently a member of the school band.
Ethan’s love of classical music stems from
his father’s influence as his father exposed
him classical music at a very young age.
Even though he is very busy with school
work and music, Ethan is still able to relax
and have fun as a middle school student
should. He believes that although many
middle school student may be somewhat
rambunctious, it is important to remem-
ber they are also very young and will
probably become more mature and fo-
cused in the near future.
In conclusion, we determined that
middle school students are just like every-
one else; they have their dreams and they
are fighting hard every day to achieve
them. They might be annoying right now,
but perhaps they just need some time to
grow-up and become more mature, just
like all of us.

4. Appreciating Our Teachers
Page 4
There is no doubt that teacher is one
of the most important jobs in the world.
As a high school student, I really appre-
ciate those teachers who try their best to
perform the teaching work. In order to
understand the details of their works and
their challenge, I interviewed one of my
favorite math teachers Ms. Economou last
week.
We did the interview on Friday lunch
time last week after Ms. Economou ac-
cepted my interview requests on e-mail.
The first question was, “Why did you
choose to become a teacher?”
“I think that doing math is really fun.
Although there are many jobs related to
math, most of those will be done on the
computer. Only a math teacher could
show the process of calculating in front of
students and teach them. So I really like
the fun of calculating. Therefore I decided
to become a math teacher.”
“Seeing the “light bomb” of
students who understand
something for the first time ...
is the most important thing
for me”
The second question was, “What is the
most meaningful thing in your career?”
Well, seeing the “light bomb” of students
who understand something for the first
time, and their ability to work through
the math problems is the most meaning-
ful thing for me.”
The final question was, “Have you ever
faced any challenge when you taught your
students?”
“Yes, I feel that I face challenges of
teaching all of the time. The first challenge
is the language barrier. Almost every stu-
dent in our school is Chinese; thus, some
students are really not very developed
with their English. As a result, many stu-
dents may not understand their teachers’
words in the class. The second challenge
is leading students to understand knowl-
edge in an effective way. As we all know,
teaching is really a complex program.
Finding a good method to teach students
well is a challenge for every teacher.”
In conclusion, as a teacher, Ms. Econ-
omou really faces a lot of challenges in
her work. Through this interview, I fur-
ther understand the meaning of being a
teacher and the hard work that they face.
The most important thing about doing
the interview is that now I further
admire Miss Economou.

~Quality Coaching On University Life~
Appreciating the Wisdom of Mr. Hollomon
Last month, as a Kang Chiao re-
porter, I interviewed Mr Hollomon
for the topic of how to make a bal-
ance between school and the rest of
life. As a high school student, we all
have a great longing for a bright fu-
ture-college life, however, it is uncer-
tain what would be like to live with-
out parents. So, I had to learn more,
and prepare more for the coming
mysterious life.
In Mr Hollomon’s words, he un-
derlined several points . . .

Cultural Differences
Dynamo Duo
Question: “Because you were teach-
ing American students before teaching in
Kang Chiao, would you like to talk about
the difference between American stu-
dents and Chinese students?”
A: “The students here, in this school,
really seem to care about education and
what they are learning, and they care
about what they are going to do. In
America there are a lot of students in pub-
lic school who don’t see a reason why they
have to go to the college…[with students
here] it makes it so much easier to be your
teacher.”
Q: “Have you ever felt disappointment
when only a few people participate in the
class?”
A: “Yep ! Sometimes it is really diffi-
cult, and it does get really discouraging…I
don’t expect all students to be excited all
the time, but I do love it when, even if
it is just for 5 or 10 minutes of the class,
everybody is at least having a good time,
and there is at least one reason for them to
smile, or one reason to be proud of them-
selves for accomplishing something.”
Q: “will you stay in China and teach
Chinese students in the future 10 years?”
A: “(laughing) I don’t know if I can
say ten years, Um... I really like it here.
Yep, I do. I like the kind of kids that are
here, I like the students that are here, and
I really like my students, I think they are
amazing.”
The first week of May is the Teacher Ap-
preciation Week. Like the Teachers’ Day,
it’s for students to express their thankful
emotions to the teachers. I interviewed
two Chinese teachers of Grade 10 in the
middle of the week. I had three questions
for them, and they answered together.
“Why did you come to be a teacher at
Kang Chiao?”
“The hardware establishment is excel-
lent. And they think there will have more
space of development and opportunity in
Kang Chaio.”
“What advice do you have for us?”
Be responsible for your behavior. Try to
do anything you want to do because you
are young. Don’t leave any shame things.
Be calm and keep going, don’t be fickle.”
“What do you think as the best way
for us to express us thankful to teachers?”
Actually, as students, we all know the
answer to this question. That should be to
study hard.
Thank for all teachers in the world.

On Friday May 6 the Kang Chiao
student council presented a surprise
Party which they had arranged and
organized, featuring a series of per-
formances to show appreciation for
all the teachers’ hard work through-
out the year. The party consisted of
five original performances from var-
ious student groups, and a special act
which featured a cooperative effort
from random teachers who joined in
the fun with one of the student dance
performances on stage. The event
also showcased 14 student staffs and
26 performers, as well as a fantastic
selection of cakes and beverages !
The Teachers were told that they were
going to have a big faculty meeting while
not knowing anything about the special
event which was planned. The perfor-
mances went exceptionally well, and it
seemed that everyone had fun on and off
the stage.
According to an interview of one of the
Chinese teacher’s in attendance, “Teach-
er’s could have a hard time in school after
their first year of teaching. New teachers
tend to question their way of teaching
and even question whether they chose the
right career. Some teachers might feel like
they should have done something better
or in another way that could make stu-
dents be more engaged. The truth is that a
student’s response to someone’s teaching,
and the gratitude of the student, can play
a major role in how well someone teaches,
or why they teach.”
In a direct address to the entire
staff of teachers at the close of the
event, the Chairman of the Student
Council, Mr. Jason Ou, shared his
thoughts . . .
”I know that it is almost impossi-
ble to say that I understand how hard
is it to be a teacher, but my mom was
once a teacher. She told me that the
hardest part of being a teacher is to
stay passionate about teaching, about
doing what you love and loving what
you do, especially when you have so
many ‘obnoxious’ and ‘annoying’ stu-
dents. So we arranged this party, be-
cause we just wanted to say thank you
for all of your hard work, and thank
you all for being such great mentors
and being our teachers.”

more experience and expand your
circle of friends. In addition, you
have to manage your time wisely,
which is to always finish your work
first. Otherwise, if you get a lit-
tle behind, you have to try really
very hard to catch up. What’s more,
when you leave high school, it is not
all about yourself anymore, you have
to think more widely, as a real adult.
Besides, you have to be more
realistic; reading more books, and
preparing more for your test, instead
of daydreaming all the time. Also,
always remember “Save the best
for the last” which means finish the
things that you hate the most, then
enjoy your life and the fullness of
your free time.”
Mr Hollomon mentioned to make

there is always another heaven hid-
ing in some other corner of the
world.
I really enjoyed the time of com-
municating with Mr Hollomon. I
really look forward to another time !
Thank Mr. Hollomon !

Question: “The Men’s basketball team
didn’t have a lot of games this year. Last
year almost every week we would have
a game, but this year we didn’t have any
home game at all. Can you explain why?”
Mr Strobel: “We didn’t have any games
this semester because we did not pay the
fee to the school for the second semester,
so the school did not want to pay for us to
play friendlies anywhere.”
Q: “How did you think the team will
do next year?
A: “Next year we will be even better
than we were this year. It was the first
year most students played as an organized
team so instruction on how to play offense
and defense as a team took a long time
this year. Next year it should be quicker
since several players will be returning. If
we have new players next year the return-
ing guys can help out the new additions
to the team. It is still a competitive sport
though so some students who made it
this year may not make it next year.
We will include at least 3 new defenses to
confuse and put more pressure on our op-
ponents and we will simplify the offense
to get more points and have players where
they are supposed to be. I have high ex-
pectations for next season to make it to
the championship game again but this
time we win it all!”
Q: “Are you happy to be the KCIS man
basketball team couch? Why?
A: “I am very happy being the men’s
basketball coach. I love coaching basket-
ball and getting to know my players more.
I like seeing players grow both in bas-
ketball and in their personal lives. I put
my all in coaching and it’s a great feeling
when my team puts their all in as well. We
grow together and form a strong bond to-
gether. I love all of my players and seeing
them excel on the court and off is a bless-
ing I am lucky enough to have. To be able
to share a passion with students allows
me to get on their level and form relation-
ships that extends further then simply the
teacher to student relationship, we are a
family! Go Gators!”
Thank you Mr. Strobel !
Recently, I interviewed Ms.Liang, who
is our Algebra teacher for the teacher ap-
preciation week. She shared her own story
and offered some useful suggestion to us.
The first question I asked Ms.Liang
was why she chose to teach in China for
one year, and her response was because
her original nationality was Chinese! Al-
though she went to America when she
was eleven, she still maintains her inter-
est in Chinese culture such as calligraphy
and traditional food.
She wanted to reconnect with her
heritage culture, but she was so busy that
she never had a chance to teach in Chi-
na before. Now the school district where
Ms. Liang taught in America has a lan-
guage program which would require her
to teach Chinese, as a result, she inquired
for the permission to have one year
teaching experience in China before the
Chinese program starts.
Before she came to China, like most
foreigners, she also had the stereotyping
that all Chinese students are smart and
good at maths. Admittedly, she found the
math basic skill of most Asian students is
better prepared than the students in oth-
er countries. However, later she realized
that students are the same everywhere,
as there are always smart ones and lazy
ones, and most of them are fond of iPads
and phones.
Another good aspect of Chinese
students is that they are respectful to
teachers, which shows their satisfactory
behaviour and discipline, but they are
also shy. Most Chinese students are not
communicative, and some of them are
even afraid of talking to teachers; so the
interaction between teachers and stu-
dents is limited. As a consequence, Ms.
Liang suggested us to be more confident
and have courage to share our ideas with
others. We can tell ourselves that we are
good enough and we need to be brave to
communicate with the rest of world.
Evil & Torture
The Dahl of it all
I love Science
Miss Kelly’s Passion
Micheal Dahl is one of the teachers
in KCIS, who is teaching English Litera-
ture with Grade 9 and 11. He comes from
Canada. There is an interesting part of his
class, that he sometimes speaks Chinese
to his students. His pronunciation of Chi-
nese is pretty close to native people for he
has been teaching in Chinese speaking
countries for 13 years.
Before he came to teach in KCISEC
about 2 years ago, he was teaching in Tai-
wan. He also said that he had taken Chi-
nese training class at the school. Based on
his experience, he seems to have a good
understanding of Chinese culture, and
he does not deny it when the others show
their surprise. Besides, one of his most
In the US, the problem is contrary that
most students are very casual with teach-
ers. When they do something wrong and
the teacher tells them, they may be defy-
ing, so it’s the flip side of American ed-
ucation. Therefore, Ms.Liang thinks there
are both positive and negative aspects of
each type of education, and it’s important
to find a way to balance it.
Moreover, she also notices that sport
is not a important part in Chinese stu-
dents’ life, so she hopes that we would
improve to have more sport activities. In
her opinion, physical exercise is as signifi-
cant as mental practice. She mentioned in
the US, students always spend lots of time
on their interests, such as instruments
and drama. It’s because their schoolwork
is not as heavy as Chinese students, and
their schools dismiss at three o’clock.
This sounds crazy to us, as we never have
chance to do what we want after school,
so we hope that we will have more free
time to develop our interests.
All teachers spend much time
on preparation for their students’ study,
since they really want to help student
to learn better and improve the areas of
knowledge. As students, we should tell
them that we sincerely appreciate their
patience, support, and painstaking effort.
Big Thank you Miss Liang & Teachers !
Some Kindness & Guidance
Mrs. Sunday’s Secrets for Success
Last Month, the Huaqiao Campus of
Kang Chiao International School wel-
comed the teacher’s appreciation week. As
a Correspondent for Kang Chiao Times, I
interviewed my homeroom teacher, Mrs.
Sunday. I sent her a e-mail about if I could
interview her and ask her some questions.
The answer was yes.
She is an older woman, who has a
six years old boy. Actually, she shares the
same age with my mom.
Mrs. Sunday is the homeroom teacher
of 11D, and she is the leader of the whole
class and tells us what we should do. For
instance, she would tell us what activities
we could join and which assembly we had
to attend. For me, she is a kind teacher.
Because I am a nice person, I never pulled
a joke on her or teased her, and we have a
really good relationship.
But for some naughty boys and girls,
she really tried to help them, and she
hoped that she could train them to follow
the rules. Also, as the guiding teacher of
model club, she tried her best to help her
students during the club time.
The question I asked her was about
why she wanted to be a teacher. By the
way, she was a English teacher in anoth-
er city for middle school students before
she came to Kang Chiao. Mrs. Sunday
said, “It is more comfortable to chat with
people instead of computers. People have
emotion, and expression, and feelings.
“It is more comfortable

I agree with her. She really enjoys
talking with her students, and trying to
help them work out any problems. She
shows her whole passion to her students,
and always wants to help them. I just feel
that I have such a good teacher, and I
appreciate it !
Thank you Mrs. Sunday !
impressive attributes is that he likes to call
himself as “evil”. “I’m the evilest teacher
in the world,” he used to say. “Torture”
is another word that he like to use when
he is describing his teaching style. But to
his students, all of the “evil” things from
Mr. Dahl are precious gifts. Perhaps they
could not perceive the hidden meaning
behind those tough tasks, they would un-
derstand one day. Besides, he said that
strict rules in his own country blocked
him from “torturing” his students, and
that was a main reason for him to teach
abroad.
When Mr. Dahl was asked about what
he wanted to say to all of the students he
had taught, he said, “To all of the ones I’ve
taught? The ones that are still alive. Those
students, remember keep studying hard,
keep working hard, or I’ll come and get
you.”
Thanks for Mr. Dahl !
“I am the most Evil Teacher
in the World”
Since it is the teacher appreciation
week, let’s talk about our teacher! As the
most effective part in students’ academics,
teachers always bring their knowledge to
us with passion.
Ms. Kelly, teaches both environmental
science and AP courses in the high school
department, so she can be one of the best
teacher examples to talk about.
In Ms. Kelly’s class, she always uses new
ways to teach her students, like drawing
the map, designing a game, or make the
test by ourselves. What is more, it is very
hard to anger Ms. Kelly, she is so kind and
patient in teaching. When you look into
her eyes while she is teaching, you can see
her love of the science and teaching.
According to Miss Kelly, “It just gets
boring if there is only the teacher talking
in the class, doesn’t it?”
Ms. Kelly lets her students draw the
story for the water cycle, design the table
game for three chapters, test their mates’
knowledge, and do the presentation in
front of the class.
As Ms. Kelly says, “Students learn
better by doing”. It looks like there are
millions of new ways in Ms. Kelly’s mind,
she tries to teach something new, and
make it fun, while she is teaching.
Sometimes students are naughty
during in the class, but Ms. Kelly never
get yelled at us. “Angry doesn’t really get
you anywhere”. To Ms. Kelly, it is worth-
less to get mad at her students. So, why
don’t just send them to DSA? Surprising-
ly, the response is “Send them to DSA and
nothing is learned”.
Essentially, Ms. Kelly just want to
make sure that her students get the
knowledge and learn something in her
class.
Ms. Kelly loves science, and why is
she passionate about teaching ? “Because
I love science.” The answer is very short
but clear. Of course, the love is the origin
of the passion. What else could it be?
Ms. Kelly is the most creative teach-
er in our school. Ms. Kelly’s patience can
cure the mistake students made. Ms. Kelly
love science, and we love her.
Thank you Ms. Kelly !

At the beginning, I was not supposed
to be in his class. However, an unexpect-
ed opportunity allowed me to change my
class to be in the his class after all.
He is Mr. Aaron Ross, our academic
writing teacher; we usually call him, Mr.
Ross. The symbol of him must be that
kind smile on his face; it really charms me
and the other students a lot, so sometimes
we also call him “teacher maitreya”.
Before he came to Kang Chiao, he
was also a teacher who taught IB curricu-
lum in Tokyo. At that time, he taught the
diploma program, Theory of Knowledge,
English language Acquisition and also AP
History. He not only taught those classes,
but also learned a lot from those students
who gave him inspiration to continue to
be a teacher. Actually, he enjoyed and felt
challenged in this job. Then, after three
years, he was recruited by Kang Chiao.
Every thing changed at that time. He
was asked to teach some different courses
and also asked to teach academic writ-
ing to help them to create the program.
However things might have changed
throughout the years, at least, for Mr.
Ross the inspiration of being a teacher
never changes.
When I asked him how he felt about
Kang Chiao, he answered like this . . .
“Kind of mixed bag.”
The reason is that he really loves the
students a lot, so he always tries his best to
help his students. He thinks they are great
when they tried hard, and that they also
believe they can do better for everyone’s
benefit.
I respect him a lot, and I will always
be proud that he was my teacher. I believe
that his kind spirit can move students a
lot. The reason why he is called Maitreya,
is not only because of his lovely smile, but
also because of the love behind his smile
that really helps students a lot.
Pop Dance
Zhang
Recently, the tutor of the Kang Chiao
Pop Dance club, Mr.Zhang, has been in-
terviewed. He shared about his teaching
experience.
Mr. Zhang explained that his club has
almost 20 people. The purpose of his club
is to teach all of his students and help
them learn how to dance popular mod-
ern styles. His club members don’t want
to join some competition. There are few
reasons.
First, there is a already a school dance
team. The club will not be as professional
as the school team. To compare the club
and the school team, the club is for fun.
the club’s purpose is simply for fun. but
their still needs to be some training. The
students will need to do every specific in
depth detail very carefully.
Secondly, Mr. Zhang explained that
when he taught the students, there are still
some questions. Some of his members
are very shy and they thought the other
dancers in the club did a very good job.
Mr.Zhang explained he could not change
everything, so the method he used is to
tell them a story about his experience of
teaching. Some of the students changed,
some still are shy.
Mr.Zhang said he simply teaches them
all of the details even if they do not want
to join in properly. This is how he chooses
to be responsible. He said, “Every one in
the club is a member who wants to study
how to dance, so I have the strong re-
sponsibly and power to teach. Therefore
I must not give up on anyone.”
Finally, he said that when he was in
college, his major was in Latin dance. But
he still can teach a lot of things. Because
every thing he teaches is very easy for him
and his fundamental skills of dancing are
very strong. That is why he wanted to cre-
ate the club. He hopes that more students
will join, and that more and more people
will enjoy the club.
Q: What is one thing or event that is
unforgettable in your teaching career?
“I have only been teaching for about
3 years so far, so I cannot say too much
on this topic yet. I think I have to go with
the flow.
“I have the presentation I had back in
Saudi Arabia where I invited a bunch of
people from the outside community to
come to see the students’ presentation on
a topic. It was interesting because I got
the chance to see what the public thought
about the topics versus what the students’
thought. I had people come in from the
outside community who were Muslim.
The Muslims were focused on religion,
and a couple of my students made a
scientific presentation. as a result, there
was a big argument in my class. That was
very interesting because it was the first
time that the students had questions that
were responded to by adults who started
yelling ideas at the students.
Q: Why did you come to China?
“Well, I have learned a lot about China.
I have read more than 3 books on China.
It is very interesting place to me, and it is
enjoyable to spend some time here to see
what the country is like.”
“I enjoy traveling and seeing the world.
China has a lot interesting things happen-
ing in its culture and I wanted to have the
opportunity to see how China, its people,
and environment are going to evolve.”
Q: What encouraged you to become
a teacher?
“I have always worked with adoles-
cents, psychologists, and students with
some behavioral problems. I found them
interesting. Working with kids can have a
lot of problems. The only proper, long-
term solution to this is to get the children
educated. Education is where the trans-
formational workforce comes in.”
Don’t Go There! Don’t Go There!
You’re Busted ! Me & Mr. B
Recently, Kang Chiao English teacher,
Mr. Burton, has shared his own pedagogy
with the Kang Chiao Times. In the inter-
view, he generally expressed his passion
for his life, his teaching career, and his
students.
“I have my own teaching method to
attract students.” In the class time, he al-
ways uses a loud voice and fierce tone to
speak out the teaching content. The rea-
son is that only in this way can students
keep their attention to the class and join
in the busy atmosphere, so that they can
receive the knowledge in the best way.
Besides, Mr. B also has a lot of class rules
in order to get closer with the students
and ensure a orderly class. For instance,
everyday, on the fourth floor of the swim-
ming building, we can always here the
loud and clear voice, “Good morning,
Mr.B!”. There’s an important rule: As soon
as we need to get into Mr.B’s classroom,
we must greet him firstly, and he will also
greet back to us. In this way, the excellent
relationship between the teacher and the
students can be bridged.
The students are also divided into
groups to do class work and also submit
work together, which is very efficient and
considerate.
At the beginning of the interview, Mr.B
said he really loved us and gave us a lot of
encouragement.
I sincerely hope that students can all
enjoy Mr. B’s interesting class.
Thanks, Mr. B.

method to attract students”

A Personal note from the Coordinator of
the Kang Chiao Times . . .
I have greatly enjoyed sharing time with
Mr. Burton. During the short time that we
have graced the halls of this institution, I
have experienced the feeling that Mr. B
is someone from my time, and my place;
someone I have always known, and yet
have only recently met.
He is a kindred spirit from a different
time and awareness of this world, a kind
companion, and a comrade in arms just
the same; a true warrior of the rainbow.
Thank you, my friend, for shining your
light with courage and integrity unto all.
In the teacher’s day, we all give thanks
to our teachers.
Flowers are blossoming into exuberant
and exciting summer. Green lawn filled
of green grass . Today is raining . When
I was saunting outside, I smelled fresh air
and watched beautiful slight. How enjoy-
able it is. Rain falls down seriously and
heavier. But I could feel pure perfection
surrounding me. Sky is gray . I stay at
school nowadays.
I said to myself,”nothing to the wor-
ry, nothing to take, you need to release
yourself into the rain.” By the way, I try
my best to feel all brilliance when I was
successful in the rain.
Teachers’ words and faces are always
serious. When they ask one question to
us, I always never mind. Imagination to
go forward into my dream.
At present, I would give an introduction
to my journalism teacher, Mr. Ross. He is
tall, about 186 centimeters. He is one hard
work person. When we are all playing and
talking during our free time, he is always
typing on his computer (I expect he’s
working on the Kang Chiao Times).
To the subject. I asked Mr. Ross about
the pitch of communication, and pure
teaching from the textbook, and which is
more important.
Communication is having dialogue to
justify or understand each other, by the
way. Communication is the bridge to
build up relationships in society. Basical-
ly, we need to respect our communicators
when we are talking . Good ability to un-
derstand others can attract more people
around you. Oppositely, bad temper and
negative things to transfer to the others
makes a more annoying effect .
In education, communication among
teachers and students is also important.
As an example, questions in the lesson
can be more targeted to exchange ideas
between teacher and student. Communi-
cation can show kindness from teachers.
Students can be more perceived.
If students are without communica-
tion with teachers, they just do what they
do. It’s boring. They can’t be seriously en-
gaged in class. Oppositely, if communica-
tion be more attractive and vivid, students
can be even smarter .
How important it is!
In conclusion through the introduc-
tion, I think communication can make
students to understand and remember
knowledge more easier in academics and
more active in perception in class.
Thanks Mr. Ross !

Society’s Eye . . .
However, not
all of them are
sweet, and most
are seldom
seen.” KER

I Want to Break Stuff !
Mr. Fairchild On Teaching & Things
~Mr. Yates-Laughlin~
On Leaving and Returning
“Good morning, Mr. Fairchild! I’m
Nancy Gao a journalist for Kang Chiao
Times, and this week each of us inter-
viewing the teacher we most appreciate.
I chose you because you are very patient
and your classes are full of laughter.”
“Hi, Nancy! All right, well thank you!
Here we go.”
Q: “I learned that you have teaching
experience in different countries. Is there
something unforgettable in your teaching
career?”
A: “Many things. Many, many things.
These are numbered but not necessarily in
any particular order aside from the order
I remember these things happening in:
a) Australia: A troubled student who
was failing his class badly and had a lot
of trouble with drugs shook my hand
after I came in and did my practicum in
his class. (practicum: teacher training; I
taught for free for 3 weeks to prove that
I knew what I was doing while getting
my teaching degree). His teacher was im-
pressed, and said that it was the first time
she had ever seen him show respect to a
teacher in their school.
Oh, also a student stabbed another stu-
dent in the leg with a pair of scissors. That
happened.
b) Canada: I had volunteered at a prima-
ry school down the road from where I
lived. I was with several classes for about
6 months. One class of grade 2 students
wrote me a poem. I can’t remember all of
it, but they mentioned that I always phys-
ically bent down to listen to them (grade 2
students are tiny humans and I am a large
man), and they thought that was really
great. It gave me a chuckle.
c) Korea: Um...honestly, nothing very
memorable from Korea. The students
were generally really great, but some were
very naughty and so I spent a lot of time
yelling in class. It was challenging, but
that probably had more to do with the
kinds of teaching I was doing there than
anything else.

“What kind of teacher?
The ones who made me feel
respected, the ones who
listened, and the ones who
treated me as a person . . .”
_________________________________
d) China: I’d rather not talk about
KCISEC yet; too many wonderful mo-
ments to mention! (I mean that non-sar-
castically; there’s a reason why I’ll be back
next year).”
Q: “Which kind of teacher did you
appreciate when you were in school?”
A: “What kind of teacher? The ones
who made me feel respected, the ones
who listened, and the ones who treated
me as a person and not with disdain. I
had a lot of very good teachers and a lot of
very bad ones. In a way they have shaped
the kind of teacher I aspire to be.
My high school football coach, Mr. Gar-
dener, had a very large impact on my life
as a teenager. He encouraged me to push
myself to my physical limits; he praised
me when I worked hard and scolded me
when I slacked off. It was never about the
outcome; it always about the amount of
effort put into a particular play or part of
training. As a teacher, I understand why
now.”
Q: “Besides teaching, which job do you
want to try? Why?”
A: “Oh wow. Let’s have some fun here:
a) Bulldozer operator: I want to break
stuff. It’s highly cathartic; and the idea
of getting paid to do that for a living is
AWESOME.
b) Voice actor: I’m not handsome enough
to be a movie star, but I could probably do
a decent job as a voice actor. I’ve done it
in the past for small gigs, here and there.
It’s a surprising amount of work, but if
teaching doesn’t work out and I can’t
find a decent 9-5 white collar gig, it’d be a
fun option (unless you’re famous the pay
sucks though).
c) Professional Wrestler: It’s been my
dream since I was 6 years old.”
Special Thanks . . .Special thanks go out to Miss Muller, Mr. Fairchild, & Mr. Burton for
their willingness to assist in the editing process, as well as Miss Sue Moon,
Miss Sinyu (both of Grade 8) and Miss Grace of Grade 11 who also helped
a great deal with the editing process in the early phases of the first edition.
To all the fantastic human beings that I had the great honor, enjoy-
ment, and privilege with which to work. With some of you I had the op-
portunity to create deep relationships, and others I hardly had the chance
to know. Whatever the case, I thank you all for your patience and support
through a very challenging and insightful year. Blessings on your Journey !
And finally, a very special thanks to My Totally Amazing and oh so
very Inspirational Journalism Students who made the Kang Chiao Times
possible ! I will miss you all incredibly ! You were tremendously patient and
flexible through many unforeseen challenges and changes to the vision and
the “plan” as we journeyed through the year together. I know all of your
futures will be bright ! You will be in my heart forever . . . Om . . .
Q: “Why did you get into teaching?”
A: ”Oh my gosh! I started to want to be
a teacher when I was in 11th Grade, and
one of the teachers I had at that point…
em, well…she sort of inspired me; she
loved everything about her class and I
loved her class; I loved being in that class.
At that moment, age 17, I decided to be a
teacher, and It has always been that way
since. The only job I ever really had is
being a teacher. Instead of just teaching
people, I like to inspire people to make
something, to be something, to learn
something, to see the world in different
way; I love that.”
Q: “So, what do you think about the
students at Kang Chiao?”
A: “For the most part, I love my stu-
dents here, you know, I’ve worked with all
kinds of students, from the kid who would
rather be anywhere but school to the kid
who has Harvard on his mind. I love the
students here, because everyone is ambi-
tious. Everybody wants to go somewhere,
they want to see the world, they want to
be in one part of the world, they want to
go to the university, they want to learn…
A new semester means a new begin-
ning. However, behind those returning
faces, some of the teachers are leaving this
semester. Mr. Yates-Laughlin, for exam-
ple, is one of the teachers who are leav-
ing the school next year. However, here is
the surprise news for all of you. He is not
leaving Kang Chiao ! Why ? Let us find
out . . .
Q: “What brought you here to Kang
Chiao?”
A: “Maybe it was destiny to come to
Kang Chiao.”
Mr.Yates-Laughlinwasauniversitypro-
fessor in Xiamen University (before that,
he was an lawyer!). During his one-year
“break”, he decided to try something new.
Surprisingly, Mr.Yates-Laughlin and Mr.
Sawchyn are friends. Mr. Yates-Laughlin
told me that Mr. Sawchyn had been his
colleague for 4 years at Xiamen Univer-
sity, and Mr. Sawchyn is the one who
kept bothering him to come to visit Kang
Chiao. At the beginning, he thought it
was a crazy idea to teach a bunch of high
school students. However, after visiting
the campus an all of the teachers in the
school, he made his decision.
“Why did you decide to stay?”
Just as Mr. Yates-Laughlin had told
everybody that he won’t stay in Knag
Chiao, he changes his mind because he
kinds of like the students he met in Grade
11. He said, “Teaching high school is not
as crazy as I thought it was before he came
to Kang Chiao”.
Just before the day Mr. Yates-Laugh-
lin went back to United States, his old
school had found a new teacher to teach
government and business law for the fol-
lowing semester. But that does not end
the drama. Ms. Jennings asked him if
there is any possibility that he would like
to teach French next year and help estab-
lish a French program. He said, “Yes”.
“Is there anything you would like to
tell your students?”
“Yes. Well… Quite a lot” he smiled
again, but this time with a little bit of
laughter.
He said that there are a lot of things
he would like to tell his students, there-
fore, he wants to open something like a
workshop to deliver all the messages and
knowledge that junior and senior stu-
dents need to know in preparation for
applying to the Western Universities. In-
deed, the school has to approve the idea;
however, he does not know what kind of
way the school would like him to present
it. So, in all, we can be looking forward to
some changes next year.
“Do you have any suggestion to the
school?”
“Patient”, he replies with a simple world,
“the school needs to be more patient
about what they want to develop. No mat-
ter what the program is, or the system or
students they want to foster.”
Moreover, he also suggests an idea where
foreign teachers could try having a stu-
dent’s schedule for an entire day, so as to
change places with the students in order to
feel what the students are thinking about
while sitting in the class and learning all
the knowledge in another language.
He lists three major elements to help so-
lidify the school system and establish a
better communication between students
and teachers: listen, be honest, and be re-
spectful. If that idea works, it might help
many teachers to understand what their
students are thinking about, and give the
teachers an opportunity to develop more
successful solutions to help those students
who need help the most.
Thank you Mr. Yates-Laughlin !
and that is something I have not had with
all my students before and I love that
about my students here at Kang Chiao.
I mean nobody likes to do homework,
nobody likes that! But most of the time,
everyone wants to learn something new
and when the students come across some-
thing new, they are eager to see more and
talk more, and I love that!”
Q: “What do you want to say to your
students?”
A: “SPEAK UP! You have a voice, you
have great ideas, you have the world wait-
ing for you, and the best thing you could
do is take it. Take that opportunity and
become something, change the world,
because this generation has that potential.
What will the world be like if you don’t
try? I tell my students that they have a
voice, and everyone has something to say,
and I want to hear it.”
At last, I want to say that Ms.Hale is
definitely one of the greatest teachers I
have ever met. She is patient and kind to
everyone, even the annoying students.
I appreciate her and her teaching, and I
would like to say “Thank you.”.
Thanks Miss Hale !
“SPEAK UP! You have a voice,
you have great ideas, you have
the world waiting for you, and
the best thing that you can do is
take it.”

The Perfection
Of Miss Muller
Miss Muller and I share some of the
same students; so we both have the op-
portunity to hear commentary, from a
handful of students, about each other’s
personality as a teacher and a person.
What I keep hearing from my drama
students is How “perfect” Miss Muller
is. I have no idea, however, what my
drama students say about me in Miss
Muller’s class. I only hope that I am
looked upon as favorably . . .
8. Coach Forsyth, having a big smile, shared a
final thought, “I think all the boys played really
well, they just need to push a little bit harder,
and next time maybe the result will be differ-
ent. But, I am really proud of them. All the boys
did really well.“

~Kang Chiao’s Dance Team Takes Shanghai By Storm~______________________
By Miss Olivia Hall
KCT Contributor
One late spring evening in May, the
Royal Danish Ballet, the Belgian Four
Aces Guitar Quartet, the Shakespeare’s
Globe troupe, Performing Arts Students
from Kang Chiao, and the Kang Chiao
Dance Team all performed on stage at the
Shanghai Oriental Art Centre, . . . truly a
once in a lifetime opportunity.
On the 4th of June, the dance team,
along with a number of other talented
singers and performers from KCIS, joined
forces with two other schools in Shanghai
to raise money for charity.
Arriving at the Oriental Art Center at
11am the group completed a long day of
rehearsal and preparation to ensure that
the completely student led event would
run smoothly. The show started promptly
at 7.15pm with the dance team in line to
perform second. The girls were nervous
but were able to perform with passion and
satisfaction allowing them to relax and
enjoy the rest of the evenings perfor-
mances.
The Dance Team performed “Sorry”,
a piece about capitalistic destruction of
the planet. The routine was a 3 part per-
formance: part one was choreographed to
the song “Zimbabwe” by New Navy, de-
picting a clean green environment. The
team wore flower headbands and flowing
black skirts, expressing a contemporary
style of dance. The second part of the
dance represented the arrival of hu-
mans and the damage done to the planet
through resource consumption and pol-
lution. This was choreographed to a song,
similar in style to that of typical hip hip,
called “Daddy” by Psy.
Finally, the third section of the dance
revealed a post apocalyptic future. The
team wore face masks to assist the audi-
ence in formulating the meaning and
intention of the dance. The song which
was chosen for this movement was
“Smoke and Retribution” by Flume, and
inspired a forceful hip hop style of dance.
The audience sat in silence for a few
moments following the performance be-
fore erupting in applause. It was an in-
credible experience for the team to per-
form in such an amazing environment,
and an evening that they will surely never
forget ! We hope to participate again in
the IW Charity Show next year. Keep an
ear to the ground for announcements
about us performing around town . . .

the kindergarten. In order to change this, I kept
exercising swimming everyday. It seemed like a
mission at first, but later I noticed that I really
like swimming. It not only changes my phys-
ical appearance, but also brings happiness to
me…” Through the interview with Ms.Cheng,
I noticed that swimming was very meaningful
to her. She will attend a competition of breast-
stroke. Hope she achieves a good score!
“I loved swimming when I was a child. Maybe
since I was born, I had already fell in love with
playing water, so I love it very much. Then I
grew up and could swim faster, I got more re-
wards because of swimming make me love it
more.” This was said by Julie Xiong, a Qingdao
girl, who is good at freestyle. She represent-
ed for our school and won the gold medal of
freestyle. She was the fastest and the best in
the pool. Most of the students knew her a lot,
because of her swimming skills. She was one
of the most popular swimmers in the school.
When she was very young, Julie got a lot of
hobbies like dancing, playing piano, and so on,
however, the one she most likes is swimming.
Her dream on swimming is to keep training
swimming and achieving more accomplish-
ments. From the conversation with her, I no-
ticed that swimming was a force to push her
forward in her life.
Each person on the team has different
dreams, and they all work very hard to reach
their goals. Most of them started swimming at
age 6, the earliest one from age 5, and one of
them only began to swim as a sport this past
summer. But age does not matter to them, nor
does the fact of when each of them began their
careers, for they do not care about these things.
They respect each other, work hard together,
and help each other compete with each one an-
other. They are a team, but they are also rivals,
and the smiles on their faces cannot tell a lie . . .
they are not only a team, but also a huge family.
Alternate kick, alternate arm action, 1000
meters swimming, and speed practice are the
daily trading for those swim team members.
Although there journey is challenging and
exhausting, they still persist and achieve their
goals.
We should learn from their spirit, and
work as hard as they do to achieve our dreams.
In Kang Chiao, there are some fish swim-
ming in the pool. The fish are free in the water,
they are beautiful and nice. Most of these fish
are young and active; some of them are strong
and experienced. These fish swim together and
are the Kang Chiao Swim Team.
The Kang Chiao swimming pool is a place
full of hopes and dreams for these swimmers;
and the person who helps them achieve their
dreams is Miss Tina. She is very tall, and always
wearing a pair of glasses. Her eyes are large
and round and her hair is as curly as kelp. She
is a young lady who has just graduated from
NanJin University where she trained in the
field of swimming, and later was a professional
specializing in the 200 meter butterfly.
She also told me that she did not realize her
love for swimming until swimming becomes
part of her life. Also, in the past she was a
coach for “Ironman” athletes, which is one of
the reasons why she became the swim team
coach at Kang Chiao. Currently, her dream is
to become a better coach, and help her students
win more gold medals; therefore, she is trying
her best to share her swimming experience to
those students. The members of the swim team
all trust and respect her very much.
Each member of the team is interesting in
their own way, and have their own special fea-
tures. They were all very active and outgoing
when I was interviewing them; they all clearly
loved swimming; and I heard many different
interesting reasons as to why. I also had the
honor to interview the three young and most
skillful members of the KCIS Swim Team who
had already won a few gold medals.
Kanki Kota, a Japanese boy who started to
learn swimming from three years old and won
the gold medal of free style in the competition.
When I saw him swimming in the pool, he
seemed like a flash, soon disappeared in my
eyes. I was shocked and surprised, how could a
boy had this kind of speed and position. From
Kanki’s saying, I acquainted that he was born in
Osaka in Japan. Unfortunately, he had a weak
body when he was very young; so his parents
suggest him to swim to exercise himself could
help improve the strength of the body. “At first,
I was very nervous and afraid since I felt very
tired when I swam a few miles. Nevertheless,
under the encouragement from my parents
and teacher, I persisted exercising everyday. I
fell in love with swimming, also my body be-
came stronger.” said by Kanki. I think that the
heart of loving swimming and determination
of persisting exercise
are the secret of his success nowadays.
“Look! It seems like a real frog jumping
and swimming in the pool.” Along with the
sight of people, I saw a girl swimming in a
pool. Her action was so relaxing and elegance
that other members always asked her to teach
them the skill. That girl is Cheng Xiang, the
gold medal winner of breaststroke, who comes
from Shanghai and also started swimming at
three years old. She has plenty of experiences
on swimming competitions, the number of
awards and competitions she had are countless.
According to Ms.Cheng, “The reason I start-
ed learning swimming was that I wanted to
grow taller. I was the shortest girl when I was in
May 30th marked the final league compe-
tition of the 2016 season for Kang Chiao foot-
ball team in which the lost a hard fought battle
to Fudan International School from Shanghai
(FIS).
Unfortunately for Kang Chiao, Fudan’s
goal keeper was very skilled and kept The Ga-
tors to only 2 goals on the day. However, this
game did show the growing trend of the Kang
Chiao squad’s abilities.
Coach Forsyth encouraged the boys on ev-
ery single detail, every single time, especially
when they did well. During the entire match
with FIS, Coach Forsyth shouted to the team,
“Keep pushing! Keep running! Talk, guys!”
Although the result was not what the team
had hoped it would be, the team gave all of
their effort in an attempt to win their final
match as a gift to Coach Forsyth.
The Kang Chiao Gators saw a mixture of vic-
tory and defeat during this year’s league play,
in which they chalked up 7 losses,1 win, and
2 draws.
“I think all the boys played really well. They
should have won a lot games that they lost.
They have opportunity to win more. We just
made silly mistakes and we didn’t make good
on opportunities as much as we could have.”
As Co-Captain Prince mentioned “We’ve lost
some games which we shouldn’t lose. I guess
sometimes you just need a bit of luck. But I
think most of us deserve a title for which we
demonstrate our skills and our attitude.”
Mr Kevin, one of the members of the team
said “We had several matches that we almost
won, it just that it didnt go as planned. But I
think we did well, and next year we will do
even better. “
