Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections passed from one person to another during sexual contact. STIs often do not cause symptoms, though they can still be transmitted. STIs primarily affect young people, who account for nearly half of new infections despite being only 25% of the sexually active population.
