KBK Group Skolkovo Investor Presentation
- 1. Cloud platform for indexing and
content-based retrieval of multimedia
information
KBK Group LLC
Novosibirsk, Russia - 2012
- 2. Technology Background
• Search engines have problems with processing billions
of images, especially those generated by social
networks (when aimed at filtering forbidden images,
providing complex search functionality, etc.).
• There is a nascent pipeline of developments dedicated
to information search using graphic information.
• The image search technology called ImmenseLab.com
(Image Search Engine Laboratory) is an application
based on fundamental research in novel database
structures and indexing techniques.

- 3. Benefits of Technology
• Benefits for subscribers and licensees:
– Compact indexing translates into small capital
investment needed to process large databases:
• High performance compact indexes: these indexes are 100
times more compact than B-Tree indexes and provides
retrieval rate that is 100 times higher than that of B-Tree
indexes.
– Great Multitude of Images
• Indexed database can
contain hundreds of billons of images.
– Efficient multitask search can be carried out
simultaneously by a wide range of criteria in
databases containing dozens of billions of images.

- 4. Benefits of Technology (cont.)
• Benefits for end-users:
– Advanced Control
• A user can control the search by selecting search methods
and criteria before the search and by adjusting search
accuracy on the fly.
– High-Performance Ranking
• High-performance ranked image search by pattern through
building a result set of images depending on similarity rate.

- 6. At KBK’s Client’s End
• Database of source images in which search should be
arranged.
• KBK installs a hashing agent – a software that computes
signatures of images with the use of different methods and
ensures communication between a client’s and KBK’s
servers.
• Hashing agent computes signatures, forms a signature
database and transmits it to the cloud server of KBK Group
where the signature database is indexed in order to arrange
similar image search.
– NB: Signature is a digital code of the image (in our case it is an integer of 8 bytes).

- 7. Functionality of KBK’s Cloud
– The cloud hosts an indexing software
that forms an indexed database of
image signatures for each client of KBK.
– The cloud stores indexed database of
image signatures pertaining to each
particular client.
– The cloud allows to arrange
simultaneous queries to all client’s
indexed databases.
– The cloud also hosts the software that
manages data exchange between KBK’s
cloud and a client’s server.

- 9. Cloud service procedure
• An end user of a client sends a query that is an image
to the client’s server.
• Hashing agent computes a signature of the query
image and transmits it to KBK’s cloud. The search
software of the cloud returns descriptors of identical
and similar images and transmits this array to the
client’s server.
• The client uses image descriptors to return sources
images to query page of web-client of the end user.

- 11. Advantages of technology for KBK’s
clients
• Source databases of images is stored on a clients’ servers and are
not shared with KBK or any other entities.
• No need to develop their own search engines and store indexed
databases.
• Clients provide new content-based services to their end users.
• Third parties can develop novel algorithms for signature computing
and use them with indexing software in order to search images of
specific nature (for instance, for screening particular images or
other purposes)
• Billing for actually used services.

- 12. Advantages for end users
• End users can use augmented search services through
search of similar images, similar graphic information,
artifacts, etc.
• An opportunities to search in extremely large
databases containing billions of images.
• High performance of service provider.
• Billing for actual services.

- 13. Advantages for KBK Group
• Proprietary indexing software is not transferred to
client’s servers.
• An opportunity to serve large number of clients
simultaneously with minimum capital investment.
• Expanding application areas due to cooperation with
third parties developing software based on image
processing and recognition technologies.
• Expanding application sectors to science, security, arts
and cinematography and gaming industry.
