Why Offer Supplemental Benefits?
When employees are asked why they selected the
organization they work at, the top three responses
are the job, the money and the benefits.
Supplemental benefits allow you to:
•Improve your employee benefit program without
spending any money
•Increase the value of the credit union to your
members; providing solutions that help in times of
need.
•Reduce your costs and even generate revenue
•Differentiate your credit union from other financial
providers
•Generate funds to support your community
Offerings that bring value to your
employees, members and community
Some of BPN’s Provider Partners:
•Aflac and other supplemental benefits
•Northwest Group Services (NWGS)
•Kelly & Associates (major medical)
•Legal Services – LegalShield
•Energy Programs – Viridian
•Medical and Lifestyle discount programs
•Homes for Heroes
•Custom Offerings, Life Insurance, Buying Svcs
World’s largest provider of supplemental benefits
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Affordable benefits that supplement medical benefits
Well known – 50,000,000 policy holders
Sold through a network of 70,000+ Associates
Value to Credit Union:
No cost to employer, employees /members pay
Tax Savings, no matching FICA
Aflac teams do enrollment, claims, and support; CU
provides access to employees/members and deductions
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
Broad range of offerings: Accident, Sickness, Short-term
Disability, Cancer, Critical Illness, Dental, Vision and more.
Affordable, portable benefits with price stability.
On an exception basis, Aflac will allow Credit Unions to
offer Aflac to its members at group rates. Helps police
officers gain access to Aflac when not offered by
employer.
Aflac continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Considerations:
Great offerings, quality company, but uneven sales
force. Independent Associates are commission only and
have high turnover. Inexperienced Associates weaken
service levels. Coordinators are paid bonuses for moving
rookies to higher sales levels, so rookies are often
included in large enrollments.
BPN Comments:
•Aflac Associate experience level affects satisfaction
•Access to benefits is a driver for CU membership
•Catch and grow
•Partnership with provider drives success
One of the nation’s largest brokers for
supplemental benefits
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
NWGS provides access to all of the major supplemental
providers; allowing companies to select the best offerings
from each provider.
Providing comparisons of competing offerings, employers
are able to “cherry pick” the best mix. NWGS’s enrollment
teams are trained on all offerings and offer face-to-face,
Web, Tele- and self-enrollment capabilities.
While supplemental benefit prices are generally at
predetermined rates; NWGS is able to provide significant
savings as an independent Third Party Administrator, and
a leader in Flexible Spending Account (FSA) administration.
Value to Credit Union:
Access to best offerings from multiple providers without
having to deal with different providers sales teams.
Side-by-side comparisons are provided.
Significant cost savings and experienced enrollers.
NWGS continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
Broader range of offerings than from single provider.
Many offerings are guaranteed issue. Enrollers are
experienced and professional.
NWGS provides access to the few national providers that
offer benefits to credit union members, such as Aflac,
Lincoln and Allstate.
Considerations:
Best of Breed approach for supplemental benefits.
They also offer College Tuition programs, Shopping
Assistants and free benefit audits. Excellent for
employees. Member benefits may need access to
members and single billing from credit union.
BPN Comments: Partnerships with larger brokers provide
flexibility and power
Kelly works with over 13,000 corporate clients to
deliver affordable group benefits
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Specializing in healthcare, Kelly & Associates are experts in
designing, delivering and managing benefit solutions.
Customized, integrated “on-line” and/or “paper”
enrollment, allowing multiple carriers and coverages to be
coordinated through a single application.
State-of-the-art Call Center with professional and
responsive service team representatives consistently
beating industry service standards.
Value to Credit Union:
High quality access to major medical and related services
with third party administration capabilities. High levels of
support for HR departments.
Provides full benefit access to employees and individual
policies for members.
Kelly and Associates continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
Extremely responsive to policy holders with call centers
and online access to benefit information. A broader
range of offerings can be made available to employees.
Considerations:
Unlike supplemental providers with national
coverage, health insurance providers tend to be more
regional. Large providers like Kelly may be licensed to do
business in all 50 states; but they may not be appointed
with specific health insurance providers in states outside
of their area.
BPN comments: Kelly would be an excellent choice if you
are in the Mid-Atlantic area, but not if you are outside
their coverage area. Find similar companies in your area
for major medical.
With over 4 million users, LegalShield provides legal services in 49 states
and 4 Canadian Provinces. For one low monthly fee its members gain
access to quality law firms without having to worry about high hourly costs.
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Personal Legal Plans: For as little as $17 a month,
LegalShield gives members the ability to talk to an
experienced attorney about any legal matter. From real
estate to divorce advice, speeding tickets to will
preparation and more - their attorneys will help.
Identity Theft Plans: Protect yourself with affordable
identity theft protection that will help prevent and resolve
identity theft issue.
Value to Credit Union:
LegalShield legal plans can help reduce employee stress
with the peace of mind that they’re protected. People
with legal plans reported less stress and better
productivity at work, with 70% of them using the plan
over three times a year.* According to The Legal needs of Working American
Families study, conducted in September 2012 by Decision Analyst, Inc.
LegalShield can be a revenue generator for Credit Unions.
LegalShield continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
LegalShield legal plan offers employees/members:
•Unlimited personal advice with family coverage
•Wills and legal document review
•Letters and phone calls made on their behalf
Considerations:
Offerings provide very good price / performance. Their
law firms employ over 1,100 dedicated attorneys with an
average of 19 years of experience.
BPN comments:. Avoid LegalShield Associates who are
not group trained. Those associates often focus more on
recruiting than on sales .
Only work with group-trained Associates with years of
experience. Credit Union members can be directed to a
credit union enrollment website.
Credit Unions help their employees and members save
money over time by selecting Viridian as their energy
supplier. This also generates revenue for the credit union.
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Deregulation allows consumers to choose where they buy
their power. Delivery of the electricity or gas to your home
as well as all necessary service is still provided by your
utility. The local utility does not make any money on the
energy, only on the delivery and service of electricity, so
the utility company supports customers who choose to
switch suppliers.
Viridian Energy provides greener electricity at an
affordable price. They exceed state required minimums of
energy from clean energy sources by at least 20%. They
have attractive fund raising programs for nonprofits.
Value to Credit Union:
Viridian helps employees and members save money over
time, support the environment and raise funds for the
credit union.
Viridian continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
Viridian helps employees/members save money on their
energy bills over time, support the environment, and
support the credit union.
Considerations:
Today, Viridian is concentrated in the Northeast, but is
expanding rapidly. Any 501(C) (which includes credit
unions) can participate in their nonprofit program. The
credit union receive a no-cost Website that allows people
to sign up for the service and pays the credit union
$2/month for as long as they have the service. Additional
bonuses are also paid.
BPN Comments: Police FOP’s and membership
organizations can also participate and can partner with
credit unions with both being paid. Deregulated energy
programs may start slowly, but will become the norm.
Get started early and realize the benefits of ongoing
revenue.
.
New Benefits – Carry the Card – Discount Medical Program
Ask us about our “Support 10,000 Families Program”
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Neighborhood Pharmacy, 10% to 85% savings on most short-term and acute care
medications. Over 60,000 participating locations, including independent, national and
regional chain pharmacies nationwide.
Humana Dental Access®, Members may save 20% to 40%* on services from general
dentistry and cleanings to root canals, bridges and crowns. Over 130,000 provider
locations nationwide.
Coast to Coast Vision™ (CTC), 20% to 60% discounts on frames, lenses and specialty
items. Over 12,000 locations nationwide
UHS Chiropractic™ , 30% - 50% savings on treatments and most other services. More
than 3,000 participating Doctors of Chiropractic nationwide.
Discounts on Hearing Aid Services, Lab Testing, Imaging Networks and more…
Value to Credit Union:
Discount medical programs provide savings to credit union
employees and members. They are discounts, not health
insurance, and have very low costs. These programs can
be used to generate revenue and lend themselves as value
added services to reward members with higher deposits.
Variations of these cards include life style discounts on
legal services, roadside assistance, identity
theft, merchant discounts and more.
New Benefits continued…
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
These provide significant discounts on medical and non-
medical purchases. While not intended as substitute for
health insurance, it can help when health insurance is
limited or not available. Some services, like access to
doctors by phone, may avoid unnecessary medical visits.
Considerations:
Medical discount programs and lifestyle discounts are
popular with employees/members and have surprisingly
low prices.
BPN Comments: Programs that are sold by insurance
agents for $10 a month can be acquired for less than $1 a
month per family. This creates interesting opportunities
for revenue generation and low cost value added
services.
Homes for Heroes rebates 25% of real estate gross
brokerage commissions to law enforcement officers
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Highlights:
Homes for Heroes® is a company that affiliates with
Realtors®, lenders and other real estate-related service
providers who offer substantial rebates and discounts to
the Heroes who serve our nation and its communities
every day. Our Heroes include law enforcement
officers, military personnel, firefighters, and others who
make our communities a better place to live.
Heroes across the country register on our website every
day looking for the savings. We match them with Homes
for Heroes® Affiliates in their area.
www.homesforheroes.com
Value to Credit Union:
The Homes for Heroes program is an attractive value
added service for credit union employees and members.
Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community
Homes for Heroes Continued…
Value to Credit Union Employees/Members:
Credit union employees or members can save money by
participating in this program if they are buying or selling a
house. Go to www.homesforheroes.com for more
details.
Considerations:
This is an attractive program where participating realtors
and related companies give up a portion of their
commissions in return for new clients. They have
broadened their “heroes” list to include teachers, doctors
and nurses.
BPN comments: Since the participating brokers are
already giving away 25% of their commissions, plus 5% to
Homes for Heroes, it generally is not a revenue generator
for the credit union.
• Individual Life Insurance – LifeHelp
• They will do all the work and the CU receives
fees. Fees paid to CU vary by provider.
LifeHelp vs. TruStage
(20%/10%, 15%/2%, 10%/0%)
• Web Based Buying Services, Northwest
Worksite Marketing Corporation
• Web-based discounts on purchases from
major vendors. Buyers receive discounts and
CU receives a share
• Custom Insurance Solutions
• Custom solutions for members. Select
features and price points

  • 14. Credit Unions help their employees and members save money over time by selecting Viridian as their energy supplier. This also generates revenue for the credit union. Offerings that bring value to your employees, members and community Highlights: Deregulation allows consumers to choose where they buy their power. Delivery of the electricity or gas to your home as well as all necessary service is still provided by your utility. The local utility does not make any money on the energy, only on the delivery and service of electricity, so the utility company supports customers who choose to switch suppliers. Viridian Energy provides greener electricity at an affordable price. They exceed state required minimums of energy from clean energy sources by at least 20%. They have attractive fund raising programs for nonprofits. Value to Credit Union: Viridian helps employees and members save money over time, support the environment and raise funds for the credit union.
  • 15.
