I held this speech at Europeana AGM, November 2016 in Riga. Cities have to be relevant for their constituents, be it citizens, businesses, NGOs, .... Open innovation and specifically hackathons can contribute significantly to this goal. We conducted the culture hackathon "Coding da Vinci North" in 2016 in Hamburg. It was a great success in terms of particitpation, public awareness, outstanding results and a lot of fun for everybody who was involved (besides a whole lot of work of course). The most striking outcome were the excellent results from the teams who used the cultural data provided to develop solutions. - Die Idee „go local“ trifft es zum Teil. Mir geht es um den Hackathon als ein Format im Rahmen einer Innovations-Agenda einer Region/City. Meine These ist, dass der Hackathon ein gutes und wichtiges Instrument ist, um lokale Innovationskultur und die Entwicklung von Eco-Systems voranzutreiben. Daher gehören Hackathons (und die unterschiedlichen Derivate, mit Sprint ohne Sprint, …) auf die Agenda der Stadtentwicklung. Kulturhackathons kommt dabei eine besondere Bedeutung zu, da diese die klassischen Kreativbranchen mit den technologischen Experten und „neuen Kreativen“ (SW Entwickler, Hacker, …) zusammenbringen. Das die Kreativbranche und Kunst- und Kultur innovative Köpfe und Branchen anzieht ist bekannt. Der Hackathon ist für mich ein Kristallisationspunkt dafür und damit ein wichtiges Element in der Entwicklung der Smart-City. Das „go local“ passt daher sehr gut in diesen Kontext. Es ist aber primär ein Aufruf an die Städte/Regionen das Werkzeug zu nutzen und „programmatisch“ in die Stadtentwicklung einzubeziehen. Ich hoffe, dies verdeutlicht, dass es hier nicht um den einzelnen Hackathon und das beste Format dafür geht sondern die Rolle von Hackathons als Element der Stadtentwicklung/Smart City. Hier ein angepasster Vorschlag für die Beschreibung: „Hackathons have become quite familiar in the recent past. Every industry creates it’s own with a specific spin, be it more data centric, hardware focused or even driven by a specific problem of the industry. Considering the expected positive effects on the city or region where the hackathons take place a few questions arise. Do hackathons have a sustainable positive impact on the development of the city (societal, economical, cultural)? How can a city leverage the power of hackathons and which role could they play in the overall urban development? Are hackathons focusing on cultural data different in terms of their contribution and positioning in the eco-system?“
