• British Board of Film Classification
• BBFC: is a company in the UK which decides the
ratings on the films being released in the UK.
• Why are ratings important?
• Ratings are important because they decide who
gets to watch which movie, this is important as to
what is suitable for each age rating, nudity is not
suitable for U,PG,12, which is why the certificate
rating was made. Inappropriate things in films are
hidden from children such as detailed killings and
swearing.
3. U
• U stands for Universal. This is for 4 years and
over.
• U ratings contain Mild things such as Mild
threat, Rude humor and very Mild language.
Words such as ‘Hell’ would be used in these
type of films.
• This is because the things children will watch
they will copy and remember.
4. PG
• Parental Guidance
• Aged 8 or older
• These films should be watched over by an
adult first before a child should be able to
watch it so that the adult knows of the
content. Domestic violence, bereavement and
racism maybe used.
5. 12A
• A means Accompanied
• 12A is for cinema only
• Audiences may go to see the film if they are 12
or over unaccompanied. Under 12’s must be
accompanied by an adult.
6. 12
• Audiences 12 or over are allowed to watch this.
• 12 rated movies contain:
• Swear words/strong and offensive but must not
be used frequently.
• sex would briefly be portrayed. Verbal
references would not be shown to this age.
• 12 would be used for video’s, blu-rays and DVD’s
7. • 15 contains:

• Aged 15 or older
• strong frequent language
• Violence
• Sexual nudity
• Brief sections of sexual violence and verbal references of sexual
violence
• Discriminatory language/behaviour
• Drugs
• Verbal references to sex
• A great deal of swearing is used
• There may be racist, homophobic or other discriminating language
8. • 18 rating films contain:

• You have to be an adult, 18 or over.
• NO 18 rates are suitable for children at all.
• 18 rated films contain very strong violence,
frequent strong language/ very strong
language.
• Scenes of strong violence, strong horror.
• Blood and gore
• Real sex (in some circumstances )
• Discriminatory behaviour
9. R18
• The R stands for Restricted.
• The R category is specially and legally
restricted.
• These films may only be shown to adults
especially in licenced cinemas.
• These films have/Porn films and have a lot of
sexual scenes which will arouse people
• Theses sort of films can only be brought and
Seen by ADULTS.
