2. Anthony Mandler is an American film director, music video director,
television commercial director and photographer. As a music video
director, his most notable and frequent collaborator is Rihanna. The
two have worked on sixteen music videos together throughout her
career, beginning with "Unfaithful" in 2006 and most recently
"Diamonds" in 2012. He has also written and directed music videos
for many other prominent artists including Spice Girls, Beyoncé,
Eminem, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Mary J. Blige, and
Lana Del Rey.
3. Anthony Mandler is a USC Film School graduate. His vivid, emotion-driven
storytelling can be seen in his music video shot with Lana del Rey for her song
"National Anthem," and again in the follow-up collaboration for her short film "Ride."
Mandler has directed over fifteen of Rihanna's music videos, from "Disturbia" to
2013's "Diamonds," and his other projects compromise a veritable register of chart-
dominators and VMA-winners ranging from the brand-altering visuals for Taylor Swift
("22," "I Knew You Were Trouble") to Selena Gomez ("Come and Get It"). His third
video for Jay Z, "Holy Grail" featuring Justin Timberlake, received worldwide media
attention for its dark subject matter and visually arresting imagery. Mandler also
managed and directed a nearly 8- minute video for The Weekend's "Belong to the
World." Shot in Japan, the narrative presents singer Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weekend)
in a futuristic dystopia as he conjures up the mysterious female object of his
affection.
Although Mandler is originally known as a prolific music video director, he has moved
his creativity into multiple other genres, each a new platform for him to challenge the
current visual standard. Mandler is signed with International production company
Believe Media for commercial representation in the US and Europe, and Quad for
representation in France, as he continues to direct music videos under his own
banner, Black Hand Cinema.
In addition to this, Mandler is also a celebrated photographer. His celebrity portraits
of icons such as Ryan Phillippe, Heath Ledger, Katie Holmes, Lebron James, Eva
Mendes, Eminem, and numerous others have featured in top publications such as GQ,
Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, and Rolling Stone.
