The CSS identifies and promotes technologies to reduce fuel consumption and pollution from trucks. Their strategies include EPA SmartWay upgrades, truck replacement, and establishing a national network of 50 truck stop electrification sites that provide grants for plug-in equipment to reduce idling. This saves approximately 1 gallon of fuel per hour by reducing fuel consumption from idling engines. Their goal is for the 50 sites to grow to 250 sites by 2020 and serve 5,000 trucks, growing to 100,000 trucks by 2020 to reduce annual diesel consumption by 8 million gallons in 2014, growing to 100 million gallons per year in savings by 2020.
