‘ Cornerstone’ for advancement in Schools ,[object Object],Cornerstone Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA)  Federal Law Defined IDEA is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities.
Autism  Incidence in School Setting ,[object Object],[object Object],More children are diagnosed than in the past, however, the prevalence is about  one percent  of school population and most general education teachers  do not receive  the opportunity to teach a child diagnosed with ASD. Autism Academic Approaches ,[object Object],[object Object],Source:  ("How students with," 2011) Extend WELCOME to all students Identify and use the right COMMUNICATION platform(s) Develop PREDICTABLE routines Understand BEHAVIOR is form of communication Use VISUALS to convey communication Consider CLASSROOM AID to help Encourage “PEER MENTORING” Focus on STRENGTHS and areas of INTEREST Be CREATIVE in lesson plans Provide frequent and positive MOTIVATORS Promote INDEPENDENCE when tasks mastered Consider all SENSORY stimulations ASSIST student when they need help (don’t ‘do them’) Allow EXTRA TIME to child Remove CLUTTER from room Try to use NATURAL LIGHTING in classroom Consider PHYSICAL PLACEMENT of where child sits Do not ACCEPT INFORMATION when child is not ‘coping’ Treat student the SAME as other students Empower student to be ACTIVE in classroom
