EFFECTS TO SRI LANKA BY THE USAGE OF ILLICIT DRUGS High spirited Sri Lankans who crushed a so-called unbeatable terrorist outfit in 2009 has now set another world record by placing the country among the top boozing nations in the world towards the illicit drug usage. The total number of drug related arrests was 67,025 in 2014. Comparing with the year 2013, the drug related arrests has increased by 1.5% in the year 2014. 35% were heroin cases and 65% were cannabis cases. Cont… 15

Colombo district contributes to 44% of the total drug arrests followed by 13% in Gampaha district and 5% in Galle district. The prevalence of drug related arrests was 329 per 100,000 populations in 2014. The total quantity of cannabis seized island wide was 19,644 kg. 16

Roll of the police on this problem should be speedier in action, reliable and measurable. Legal sentences on this problem should be more strict. Need to stop drug trafficking in the country with the co operation of Sri Lanka custom department in harbors and airports. - 19. CONCLUSION Today in Sri Lankan society, illicit drug problem becomes a vast calamity. To eliminate this problem from the society all the people in the country should have to get link together. With the help of the government and the government organizations, privet sector organizations and NGOs we can implement valuable programmes. Same time as liable person in Sri Lanka we should have to ignore illicit drugs at any cost. Every time we need to shout at these things. 19

It is not only a causal factoring many diseases, but also a precursor to injury and violence. Furthermore, its negative impacts can spread throughout a community or a country, and beyond. The rapidly changing socio-economic status accompanied by liberalized values of society has affected not just the numbers but also the pattern of having drugs, making it common and more acceptable. In addition, those who do not consume drugs are also at risk. Living with a drug user is a family affair. Because it subjects all members of a household to constant stress and fears of various kinds, it has often been referred to as a “family illness.” To one degree or another, all members of the family are affected. However, not all drug addicted families, nor all members of the same family, are affected in a similar manner.
- Also, illicit drugs are drugs, which have controls on them by a government and are illegal in certain situations (a person is not allowed to have them). A drug is any chemical designed to affect the human body. A psychoactive drug is a drug that affects the brain. Some controlled drugs are allowed if you have permission (called a "prescription") from a doctor. Other drugs are illicit - meaning you are never allowed to have them. The most used drugs are not illicit.
- It is a drug made from the Indian hemp plant, Cannabis Sativa. (Hashish and hashish oil comes from this plant). Cannabis contains hundreds of chemicals, which affect the mind and body. Among the chemicals causing effects, THC is the main ingredient. The amount of THC and other chemicals varies in different “Cannabis” plants. Marijuana, Yarndi, Pot, Weed, Hash, Dope, Gunja, Joint, Stick, Kronic (synthetic form), cone, Choof are the other names for it.Cannabis is usually rolled up in a cigarette called a joint or a nail. It can also be brewed as a tea, mixed with food, or smoked through a water pipe called a bong. how does Cannabis affect the mind and body? PHYSICALLY (1).It causes the heart to speed up, which can be especially dangerous to people with heart conditions, high blood pressure or other circulatory problems. (2).Lower body temperature (3).Impairs coordination (4).Slows reactions (5).Stimulates appetite mentally It affects moods and perceptions, for e.g. Users may feel: Silly, Quiet & Withdrawn, Confused, Frightened and Anxious. Generally, the more THC consumed the stronger and longer lasting the effect produced. Tolerance – that means a person has to use more and more “Cannabis” to get the same effect once produced by smaller amounts. Because of the tolerance, build up “cannabis” can lead users to consume stronger drugs to achieve the same high. When the effect starts to wear off, the person may turn to more potent drugs to rid her/himself of the annoying condition that prompted her/him to take “cannabis” in the first place.
- SHORT-TERM EFFECTS (1). Abusers experience clouded mental functioning. (2). Awareness of pain may be suppressed. (3). Pregnant women can suffer spontaneous abortion. (4). Cardiac (heart) functions slow down and breathing is severely slowed, sometimes to the point of death. LONG-TERM EFFECTS (1).Scarred and/or collapsed veins, bacterial infections of the blood vessels, heart valves, abscesses and other soft-tissue infections and liver or kidney disease. (2).Lung complications may result, sharing of needles or fluids may result in hepatitis, AIDS and other blood-borne virus diseases.

Some of the common names for cocaine include C, coke, nose candy, snow, white lady, toot, Charlie, blow, white dust and stardust.It is made from the coca plant and next to methamphetamine, creates the greatest psychological dependence of any drug. The most common form of cocaine is cocaine hydrochloride. This is a white, crystalline powder with a bitter, numbing taste. Cocaine hydrochloride can be further processed to produce cocaine base, known as freebase and crack. Freebase is a white powder, while crack generally comes in the form of crystals that range in colour from white or cream to transparent with a pink or yellow hue. Cocaine hydrochloride is often mixed, or 'cut', with other substances such as lactose and glucose, to dilute it before being sold. How does the Cocaine affect the mind and body? SHORT –TERM EFFECTS (1). Intense feelings of depression and edginess and a craving for more of the drug. (2). People who use it often do not eat or sleep properly. (3). Increased heart rate, muscle spasms and convulsions. (4). Makes people feel paranoid, angry, hostile and anxious, even when they aren’t high. LONG-TERM EFFECTS (1). Can cause irritability, mood disturbances, restlessness, paranoia and auditory (hearing) hallucinations. (2). Severe depression, which becomes deeper and deeper after each use. This can get so severe that a person will do almost anything to get the drug-even commit murder & if he/she cannot get cocaine, the depression can get so intense it can drive the addict to suicide.
