Indicator 4.3.6 Rock is composed of many different combinations of materials. Lesson plan website: http://www.indianastandardsresources.org/files/sci/sci_4_3_rocks.pdf
Definitions Rock- Relatively hard, naturally formed mineral or petrified matter Natural- existing in or produced by nature Petrified Matter- to become stone or like stone Edible- Something fit to be eaten; food
Background Information Rocks are made of many different minerals. Minerals are solid, naturally occurring substances. Scientists observe rocks so that they can learn about the minerals that the rocks are made up of.
Before the activity, answer these questions in your journal. What are rocks made up of? Are all rocks the same? Why or why not?
1. Get one edible rock bag, paper plate, and Edible Rocksworksheet out of the science box.2. Take the rock out of the bag and place it on the paper plate.
3. Draw your edible rock in the box on your Edible Rocks worksheet. 4. Get out your hand lenses and tell what properties(color, shape, texture, and size) your rock has on your Edible Rocks worksheet.
5. Your edible rock is made up of many ingredients just like rocks in nature are. 6. Record in your Edible Rocks worksheet what ingredients you think are in the rock you have in front of you.
7. Now, you may take your edible rock apart to see what ingredients are in it. You can taste the rock! Record, on your Edible Rocks worksheet, all the ingredients you see or taste in your rock.
Assessment In your journal, answer these questions: Would the edible rocks have been the same if I would have put nuts in place of the raisins? Explain how combinations of minerals make rocks different from each other.
