INTRODUCTION
The term “sustainable development” first came to prominence in the
world Conservation Strategy (WCS) in 1980.
It achieved a new status with the publication of two significant reports by
Brundtland on: North and South: a programme for survival and common crisis
(1985) and Our Common Future (1983) and has gained even greater attention
since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)
held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
In September 2015, 193 countries including India committed to the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) as detailed in the UN resolution, “Transforming our
world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The SDGs
comprehensively cover social, economic and environmental dimensions and build
on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which covered the earlier fifteen-
year period from 2000 to 2015.
India has been making strides towards achieving the social, economic and
environmental goals covered under Sustainable Development Goals. This
achievement gains further significance in the face of the considerable human and
economic costs imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has set countries back
on their developmental goals and created serious impediments to the attainment
of the Sustainable Development goals, the world over.
Meaning of Development
 Generally development is the gradual growth of
a situation that becomes more advanced and
strong than previous one.
 Development is a unfolding of human potentials
for meaningful participation in economic,
social, political and cultural process and
institutions. So that people can improve their
conditions.
 Development is intended to bring a positive
change for human being and its surroundings.
Development may take place by bringing about a
change in policy, projects and legislations.
Meaning of Sustainable
Development (SD) -
"Sustainable development
is development that meets
the needs of the present,
without compromising the
ability of future
generations to meet their
own needs."
DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 Sustainable Development can be defined as an approach to
the economic development of a country without
compromising with the quality of the environment for future
generations.
 Specially, Sustainable Development is a way of organizing
society, so that it can exist in the long term. This means
taking into account both the imperatives present and those
of the future, such as the preservation of the environment
and natural resources or social and economic equity.
 The Sustainable Development Goals agenda was accepted
by all members of the United Nations in 2012 at the Rio De
Janerio Council Meet with an aim to promote a hedalthy and
developed future of the planet and its people.
Main objectives
of
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 Stable economic growth –
The eradication of poverty and
hunger to ensuring a healthy life.
 Conservation of natural
resources -
Achieve universal access to basic
services such as water, sanitation,
and sustainable energy
Reduce inequalities in the world,
especially gender inequalities.
Supporting the generation by the
development of opportunities
through inclusive education and
decent work. Foster innovation
and resilient infrastructures by
creating communities and cities
capable of producing and
consuming sustainably
 Environmental protection –
Caring for the environment by
combating climate change and
protecting oceans and terrestrial
ecosystems
 Social progress and
equality –
Importance of Sustainable Development
Environmentally sustainable economic growth is another name to the concept of
Sustainable Development. The goal of which is to achieve harmony between
environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and socio-political
sustainability. Sustainable development always encourages us to conserve and
enhance our resources, by gradually changing the manners in which we develop and
use technologies. All Countries should meet their basic needs of employment, food,
energy, water, and sanitation. Everybody is rightful to a healthy, safe, and clean
environment. This can be easily achieved by reducing pollution, poverty, and
unemployment
Examples of Sustainable Development –
Wind Energy
Solar Energy
Crop Rotation
Sustainable Construction
Efficient Water
Fixtures
Green
Space
Sustainable
Forestry
3PILLARS OF
Development
Why India needs to achieve the
sustainable development goal?
India as a nation is entrepreneurial and at the apex of changes. With India being World’s youngest
country its youth needs to be engaged in early and action to create and sustain a long-term momentum
that can help the country see its targets through and drive Sustainable development goals action. More
than 70% of the world population lives in cities. Cities already consume 80% of global material and
energy supplies and produce 75% of all carbon emissions.
Sustainable development requires the active
involvement of all stockholders : government,
NGOs, private sectors but, also civil society. It is
not just politicians or policy makers who decide
what SD should be like.
You have to remind policy makers to make
decision to protect your future : you can remind
them that you want better jobs, cleaner cities,
more equitable resources distribution and above
all, a guarantee that your future is secure, full of
opportunity, a pleasant world to live in and a
healthy planet.
 We need to spread social
awareness to bring massive
change in social attitude.
 Action must be taken against
the backdrop of serious
inequities and their impact on
the environment.
 Environment mistakes of the
past need not to be repeated,
as past patterns of
degradation are not
inevitable.
There is no ‘PLAN B’ , because we do not have a
‘PLANET B’.
- BAN-KI-MOON
UN SECRETARY GENERAL
CONCLUSION -
We as citizens should unlock market businesses for innovative and sustainable
products to get cost-effective energy-saving solutions. Reduce deforestation and
promote afforestation and has to make our environment carbon neutral. We should
restrict the use of renewable resources and substitute them with non-renewable
resources. It means the rate of extraction should not exceed the rate of
regeneration. We can’t have decent work and economic growth or food security
without first taking care of the environment that is the land, forest, oceans. If we
can achieve these 17 Sustainable Development Goals among us we will make the
world a more prosperous place for all.
“No matter how complex global problems may seem, it
is we ourselves who have given rise to them. They
cannot be beyond our power to resolve”.
