5. A “STICKY” Intranet
A successful Intranet is one that keeps users coming back day after day to stay
on top of everything they need to get their jobs done.
The problem is, too often intranets are forgotten
because:
• Either employees don’t know that it exists
• They have too many other LOB tools to use
• They don’t know how to use it
• Or they don’t have any reason to use an Intranet.
If you or your intranet suffer from any of these symptoms, you are in the right
session!
6. A “STICKY” Intranet
IT Policy to have the default page on
user’s browser be the home page of
the intranet?
No!
It would get them there but wouldn‟t
keep them there.
Tip: Make your employees see value in using the Intranet (Don‟t just force a
corporate policy).
7. SUCCESS FOR YOUR INTRANET
FOCUS ON USERS NOT ON TECHNOLOGY!
An Intranet is only as good as the number of satisfied users.
You get your ROI from the Intranet if it helps employees get their work done
easier or find helpful information easily.

10. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
1. An Intuitive User Interface
If you want your staff to spend part of their work day within the Intranet, the user interface has to be
intuitive, easy to use, and visually appealing.
Tip: Don‟t clutter all the information you have on your home page. Keep it clean and simple.
11. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
2. An Intuitive Navigation
If you have to click more than twice to get to where you want, your navigation has failed!
Tip: Have multiple navigation mechanisms like a footer, mega-menu and quick-links.
12. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
3. An Effective Search
Information is created at an ever-
expanding rate and finding the right
information at the right time quickly
and easily is vital for your employees.
Build a strong Information Architecture
and tag everything!
Tip: Have “best bets”, “top searches” and
“did you mean?” type features to make
searching easier.
13. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
4. Fresh Content
Think of your Intranet as a daily newspaper for your company, and make sure that the news is really new.
Your staff will disregard the Intranet if you don't keep the information up to date.
Tip: Decentralize content creation and have users write blogs/articles/news.
14. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
5. An Evolving Governance Strategy
Empower your users, don’t restrict them! Trust them and make them feel a part of the organization.
Tip: Have a „Governance Board‟ responsible for developing governance strategies and continue to refine
them over time.

6. Support for all devices and browsers.
Study: 488 Million mobile devices shipped vs 417 Million PCs/Laptops in 2011 – Forrester Research.
Tip: Invest in device and browser support! Don‟t restrict your users to work only at work.
16. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
7. Analytics
Based on analytics focus on the sections which need attention and improve the overall experience.
Tip: SharePoint OOTB analytics isn‟t going to help. Use a 3rd party software to help drive analytics.
Be informed on site usage patterns

8. Relevant/Personalized Content
Provide a personal experience by providing only relevant
content (documents and information) for the user.
Don’t limit personalization to just “MySites”.
Tip: Not everything makes sense for everyone! Apart from
providing targeted content, let users personalize/favorite
links, apps and documents to make frequent use easy.
18. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
9. Integrate LOB Applications
Most organizations have other tools/products/software that can’t be replaced, but can be integrated!
Tip: Make your Intranet the gateway to all your LOB apps and make it seamless for the user.
19. 10 COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL INTRANET
10. Continue Improving
Don’t stop at Go-Live! Continue adding new features and keep taking feedback to improve.
Tip: Have a flexible roadmap based on user feedback. Make sure you understand that go-live is not the
end, it‟s just the beginning!
20. KEEP YOUR AUDIENCE INTERESTED
Find out what they want
• Separate noise from signal
• Constantly ask for feedback from all
users using polls and surveys
Post information only on the Intranet
• Use URLs instead of attachments on
emails
• Encourage collaboration and enable
versioning and frequently audit
Engage
• Have a launch party/event
• Also have frequent focus group
meetings
• Keep changing assigned roles
