When software developers write automated tests for their software, the quality increases, the design improves and the project becomes more manageable. The development also becomes more fun! In this presentation you will learn how to write automated tests for embedded software. You will see a live demonstration of writing an automated test for a feedback control algorithm in C. I will also talk about the benefits of writing tests and why it can actually improve your design and save you time. When having a large set of automated tests it becomes valuable to run all tests automatically every time the code is changed. I will touch upon what is the best continuous integration setup for embedded software projects. Sample code can be downloaded from http://www.zealake.com/public/embedded-autotest.zip

Leaning on the two Ts is a talk on improving code quality, personal practise and developing good habits using tools and techniques. Attendees of this talk will learn about my experience when learning to use static analysis tools (i.e. SonarQube) and some of its features. In addition also find out how it can be used to improve your code quality and personal practice. A number of tools will also be mentioned and how to include them in your practise. Powerpoint-like presentation sharing information from a perspective higher than just the use of tools, although no runtime implementation or live coding will be performed. Live examples might be shown depending on time constraints. The presentation is definitely for intermediate and experienced Java developers, but also beginner developers who would like to know more about code quality and tools that can be of help. Also for those already using static analysis or other tools in anger or just casually. Especially those who would like to know how to use tools as a medium to learn from.

Everybody wants to invest in automated testing solution because it saves money and improves quality. But usually after the initial investment of time and resources in implementation and few months of happy running it starts breaking, then stops working completely, then it is abandoned. How do you prevent this from happening? How can you make it easier for developers and testers to keep it up? I want to share my experience with creating automated testing solutions for eclipse based projects and describe what worked and what did not. This talk will include descriptions of several testing frameworks and why some of them failed. Testing frameworks discussed will include JUnit, Mockito, SWTBot, Window Tester, Jubula, Squish and some in-house frameworks. I also will describe how to take advantage of static analysis for testing. I will share tips and tricks on how to design your code with testing in mind and how to create effective test cases and integrate testing into your development process in order to reduce the chance of automated testing abandonment.

This is a presentation to explain the concepts described in the paper "A Concept Analysis Inspired Greedy Algorithm for Test Suite Minimization" by Sriraman Tallam and Neelam Gupta. Abstract: Software testing and retesting occurs continuously during the soft- ware development lifecycle to detect errors as early as possible and to ensure that changes to existing software do not break the soft- ware. Test suites once developed are reused and updated frequently as the software evolves. As a result, some test cases in the test suite may become redundant as the software is modified over time since the requirements covered by them are also covered by other test cases. Due to the resource and time constraints for re-executing large test suites, it is important to develop techniques to minimize available test suites by removing redundant test cases. In general, the test suite minimization problem is NP complete. In this paper, we present a new greedy heuristic algorithm for selecting a minimal subset of a test suite T that covers all the requirements covered by T . We show how our algorithm was inspired by the concept analy- sis framework. We conducted experiments to measure the extent of test suite reduction obtained by our algorithm and prior heuristics for test suite minimization. In our experiments, our algorithm al- ways selected same size or smaller size test suite than that selected by prior heuristics and had comparable time performance.

A successful gardener merely creates the conditions that allow life to unfold. If we seek to create buildings that have more “life”, can the design profession learn from the wisdom of a gardener? Is there a way of thinking about design, and a process, that offers a pathway to more life-filled buildings and spaces? In this presentation, members of TKWA, an architectural and interior design firm with 25 years of Pattern writing experience, demonstrate how to break out of the profession’s familiar, yet limiting, Cartesian design framework. Ariel Steuer and Tom Kubala will articulate and demonstrate how written Patterns, as developed by Christopher Alexander, can support a pathway to beauty, inspiration, and buildings imbued with life.
