ABOUT THAT?

2. WHAT IS IT?
• Sexual exploitation is one of the most
widespread realities of human trafficking.
Women and children (they are the most
requested categories) are literally enslaved as
they are forced to whore themselves.
They are treated as if they were objects and
often they are beaten up and seriously injured.
Criminal organizations hold this business which
is getting bigger and bigger.

3. WHO IS LIKELY TO BE A VICTIM?
Women, children and even men can become victims
of sex trafficking in different ways:
• Females who come to work as house servants or in
bars are tricked and forced into sex work
• People who come intentionally to work in sex
industry but who end up being exploited
• Migrants who pay smugglers to take them into a new
country
• Children who migrate accompanied by an adult
being promised a better lifestyle. These adults are
often known and trusted by both the child and
his/her family.

4. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?
• As far as sex trafficking in Europe is
concerned, sex slaves come from both
eastern Europe countries and Sub-
Saharan areas as they are not
developed zones so the poorer the
people are, the easier it is for traders to
enslave people because of their
precarious conditions.

5. CHILD SEX TOURISM:
WHAT? WHO? HOW? …
• This problem occurs when a person
travels internationally or domestically
and involves himself in sexual
exploitation of children. They are
exploited mostly in private properties.
• People travel just to do this criminal act
because in their country paedophilia is
not accepted by the culture and it is
severely punished by law.

6. ...WHERE?
• Child sex tourism more commonly
takes place in developing countries as
there are a large number of children
who are sold by their families, as they
need money to provide for their
sustenance, to employers, who force
them to work in their manufactures (like
the carpet one). In turn children are
often introduced to sex trafficking.

7. WHICH ARE THE CAUSES OF
SEX TRAFFICKING?
The reasons why someone might start
being exploited are:
• Limitation of legal employment and
oppurtunities for education
• Undervalued women are more likly to be
abused and coerced into sex slavery
• People who are often poorly-paid or
unemployed become the main social
category at risk of being introduced to
sexual exploitation

8. WHO ARE THE BUYERS?
Buyers do not belong to a specific social
class.
Buyers do not belong to a specific country.
They are everywhere between us, perhaps we
have seen them but we have not noticed who
they effectively are.
They hide their perversion behind normal
daily behaviour.

9. THE SIZE OF THE PROBLEM
Data are very useful to understand how big
something is, so here are some:

Among state-identified trafficked victims
4 people out of 5 were trafficked into sex
industry
• 1 prostitute out of 4 has been trafficked

10. HOW CAN WE STOP IT?
This is a crucial point. Of course it is not easy to
stop such a big industry. Criminal organizations
are very powerful as they have many contacts,
even with politicians.
The only way to vanquish them is to denunce the
problem raising our voice without fear.
Indifference helps them go on enslaving and
trafficking people.
