INTRODUCTION
(WHY IT IS REQUIRED ?)
 Transportation is important. It is about people and how
they live their lives, how they get to work, how they get
their children to school, how they buy food, clothes, and
other necessities, and how families visit one another
around the country. It is also about business.
 Transportation is critical to how the supply chain
functions, how raw materials get to factories, how goods
get to market, how food gets from farmers to kitchen
tables, and how energy products move from areas of
production to areas of consumption.
 An efficient national transportation network allows
business to lower transportation costs, which lowers
production costs and enhances productivity and profits.
 Urban freight is the system and process by which goods
are collected, transported, and distributed within urban
environments. The urban freight system can
include seaports, airports, manufacturing facilities, and
warehouse/distribution centers that are connected by a
network of railroads, rail yards, pipelines, highways,
and roadways that enable goods to get to their destinations.
 Urban freight distribution is essential to supporting
international and domestic trade as well as the daily needs of
local businesses and consumers. In addition, it provides
thousands of jobs and other economic benefits.
 The efficient and timely distribution of freight is critical for
supporting the demands of modern urban areas. Without
freight distribution, urban areas could not survive, grow, and
flourish.
 Freight distribution also generates significant economic
benefits.
 The most common method to transport freight and
commodities are rail, truck , air, bus and pipelines while
information can be transported using optic fiber, cable,
cellular towers, telephone wire, radio waves, and other
technologies.

CLASSIFICATION OF URBAN GOOD

ESTIMATION OF GOODS MOVEMENT
DEMANDS
 Forecast of urban goods movement should be include
consideration of
 changing pattern of urban structure.
 locations of terminal and transfer points.
 land use pattern .
 Changing economics and cost of the goods movement
industry .
 Social and environmental consideration.
 Labour practice within the industry.
 Technological innovation in goods movement.
GOODS MOVEMENT ANALYSIS
Methodology
1- Delineation of study area
2- Study of land use pattern
3- Study of labour practice and nodes
4- Identification of goods movement centers and origin and
destination surveys
5- Study of inflow and outflow commodities
The basic criteria for delineation survey are
homogeneity in characteristics intensity of goods
movement in the urban area, which in turn based on
observation survey.
Types of survey conducted are :
1- Interview of Truck etc. at different station on major
corridors.
2-Interviews with wholesale market association and
godown authorities.
3- Physical observation survey.
 To study interurban goods movement O-D survey in
form of opinion are conducted. The various mode studies
to find problems of each, if any are conducted by
interviews with urban transport labour association.

GOODS MOVEMENT AND
ECONOMY

Urban goods movement
• Urban goods movement is essential for the prosperity of
the urban areas but at the same time poses problems
related to the environment, traffic safety and accessibility.
• The central government is responsible for rail and highway
facilities, and the city is the responsible for the local
network.
A well recognized strategy to provide efficient movement of
goods within the city will help to maintain a strong economy,
specific policies include,
• Highway asses points and major arterials.
• To provide for the safe and efficient movement of goods
and services within transit, automobile, and pedestrian
supportive system.
• To provide adequate and safe rail facilities and grade
separation of railway main lines from urban roads.
• To promot high standard of environment management and
aesthetic quality of routing, design and construction of
transportation structure.
PROBLEMS IMPOSED GOODS
MOVEMENT
• Lower speed affect the traffic stream.
• Over aged vehicle for operation- resulting in inefficient and
uneconomical movement.
• Poor road geometry and pavement condition for operate
the vehicle at most uneconomical speeds.
• Vehicles remain ideal losses and money.
• Congestion- which result in long travel time and delay
movement
PROBLEMS IMPOSED B GOODS
MOVEMENT
• Road side parking reduce the traffic capacity of roads.
• Travel and heavy vehicles accounts for major share of fatal
accidents.
• Aged vehicles excessive air pollution.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
• Location of wholesale markets
• bypasses
• Traffic congestion management
• Curb space limitation
• Truck parking acces
• Increased traffic management
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
• Designated Truck lanes
• Traffic operation concerns
• Goods movement data collection
• E-commerce
• Designated truck routes
• Need for minor truck terminal
Intelligent Transportation Systems
1. Real-time Information
Systems
2. Dynamic Routing
3. Vertical Height Detection
Systems
• Objectives:
– Help carriers improve
delivery reliability
– Reduce costs, and
respond to unexpected
incidents
– Reduce impacts of truck
traffic. 21
