3. “Stephen Covey is an American Socrates, opening your mind to the
„permanent things‟ ---values, family, relationships, communicating.”
---Brian Tracy, author of psychology of achievement
4. INSIDE-OUT
There is no real excellence in all this world which can be separated from right
living.
---DAVID STARR JORDAN
Inside-out means to start first with self; even more fundamentally.
Start with the most inside part of self with your paradigms,
your character and your motives.
5. PARADIGM
The word paradigm comes from the Greek.
It was originally a scientific term
more commonly used today
to mean a, model, theory, perception, assumption, or frame of reference.
6. POWER OF A PARADIGM
You might work on your attitude.
you could think more positively.
You still wouldn't get to the right place, but perhaps you wouldn't care.
Your attitude would be so positive, you'd be happy wherever you were.
8. A woman in her 60‟s or 70‟s.
Who looks sad, has a huge nose, and
Certainly no Model.
She is someone you probably would
help across the street.
Am I right..???
9. Now what do you think is she really
60 or 70 years old ?
No, This lady is young, good looking.
I‟d like to take her out. She is lovely.

THE SAME FLOW OF THINKING
12. HOW YOUR PARADIGM
SHIFTS
The more bound a person is by the initial perception.
the more powerful the "Aha!" experience is.
It's just like the lights were suddenly turned on inside.
13. POWER OF A PARADIGM
SHIFT
The term Paradigm Shift was introduced by Thomas Kuhn
in his highly influential landmark book, The Structure of Scientific
Revolutions.
Kuhn shows how almost every significant breakthrough in the
field of scientific endeavor is first a break with tradition, with old ways of
thinking, with old paradigms.
14. STORY OF A MINI PARADIGM
SHIFT BY THOMAS KUHN…
I remember a mini-Paradigm Shift I experienced one Sunday morning on a
subway in New York.
People were sitting quietly -- some reading newspapers, some lost in thought,
some resting with their eyes closed. It was a calm, peaceful scene.
Then suddenly, a man and his children entered the subway car. The children
were so loud and rambunctious that instantly the whole climate changed.
15. CONT…
The man sat down next to me and closed his eyes, apparently oblivious to the
situation.
The children were yelling back and forth, throwing things, even grabbing
people's papers.
It was very disturbing. And yet, the man sitting next to me did nothing.
It was difficult not to feel irritated. I could not believe that he could be so
insensitive to let his children run wild like that and do nothing about it, taking
no responsibility at all.
16. CONT…
It was easy to see that everyone else on the subway felt irritated, too.
So finally, with what I felt was unusual patience and restraint, I turned to him
and said, "Sir, your children are really disturbing a lot of people. I wonder if
you couldn't control them a little more?“
The man lifted his gaze as if to come to a consciousness of the situation for
the first time and said softly, "Oh, you're right.
I guess I should do something about it. We just came from the hospital
where their mother died about an hour ago.
17. SEEING AND BEING
Sandra and I knew our son was a slow, difficult, and deliberate process. The
approach we had first taken with him was the outgrowth of years of
conditioning and experience in the personality ethic. It was the result of
deeper paradigms we held about our own success as parents as well as the
measure of success of our children.
19. It depends on us how we
see..
Whether there is really a
Problem
or just we thing it is a
Problem.
WE HAVE A SOLUTION
FOR
EVERY PROBLEM…..!
20. A NEW LEVEL OF THINKING
“ The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level
of thinking we were at when we created them.”
---Albert Einstein
21. FOR A NEW LEVEL OF
THINKING WE NEED TO HAVE
Need to shift your paradigm to a new, deeper, inside-out level.
Generate positive energy.
Side step negative energy.
Primary greatness of character.
Secondary greatness.
Avoid confessing of other‟s sins.
Don‟t feel victimized.
22.
23. “We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a
habit.”
---ARISTOTLE
24. WHAT IS A HABITS
for our purposes, we will define a habit as
“the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire.”
Knowledge is theoretical paradigm, what to do and
why.
Skill is how to do.
Desire is the motivation, the want to do.
25.
26. THE MATURITY CONTINUUM
There are Three stages of Maturity Continuum :
1. Dependence: The paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others
to take care of us.
2. Independence: The paradigm under which we can make our own decisions
and take care of ourselves.
3. Interdependence: The paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve
something that cannot be achieved independently.
27. P/PC BALANCE
The Seven Habits are also called habits of effectiveness.
They are based on principles designed to bring long term benefits.
These are in harmony with the law called the “P/PC BALANCE”
P
P= Production
PC= Production capacity

31. I know of no more encouraging fact
than the unquestionable ability of man
to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.
--HENRY DAVID THOREAU
32. THE SOCIAL MIRROR
If the only vision we have of ourselves comes from the social mirror, from the
current social paradigm and from the opinions, perceptions and paradigms of
the people around us---our view of ourselves is like the reflection in the crazy
mirror.
“You‟re never on time”
“Why can‟t you ever keep things in order?”
“You must be an artist”
“I can‟t believe you won”
“This is so simple, why can‟t you understand?”
The reflection of the current social paradigm tells us we are largely determined by
conditioning and conditions.
33. THREE SOCIAL MAPS
There are three theories of determinism widely accepted,
independently or
in combination, to explain the nature of man.
1. GENETIC DETERMINISM
2. PSYCHIC DETERMINISM
3. ENVIRONMENTAL DTERMINISM
34. GENETIC DETERMINISM
Genetic Determinism basically says that your grand-parents did it to you.
That‟s why you have such temper.
Your grand-parents had short tempers and it is in your DNA.
You are a Punjabi that‟s why your nature is like Punjabis.
35. PSYCHIC DETERMINISM
Psychic Determinism basically says that your parents did it to you.
Your upbringing, your childhood experience essentially laid out your personal
tendencies and your character structure.
That‟s why you‟re afraid to be in front of a group.
It is the way your parents brought you up.
36. ENVIRONMENTAL
DETERMINISM
Environmental Determinism says that someone or something in your
environment is responsible for your situation.
Your boss is doing it to you or your spouse, or your economic situation, or
national policies.
37. EACH OF THESE MAPS IS BASED
ON THE STIMULUS/RESPONSE
THEORY.
39. PROACTIVE
I choose my attitude, emotions, and
moods
I can forgive, forget, and let go of past
injustices
I‟m aware that I‟m responsible
I‟m the creative force of my life
42. LISTENING TO OUR
LANGUAGE
REACTIVE LANGUAGE
PROACTIVE LANGUAGE
There‟s nothing I can do.
That‟s just the way I am.
He makes me so mad.
They won‟t allow that.
I have to do that.
I can‟t.
I must.
If only.
Let‟s look at our alternatives.
I can choose a different approach.
I control my own feeling.
I can create an effective
presentation.
I will choose an appropriate
response.
I choose.
I prefer.
I will.
43. CIRCLE OF CONCERN &
CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE
Circle of concern:
Our health, children, problems at work,
national debt, war etc..
Circle of Influence:
Those things over which we have control and we
can do
something about.
46. Focusing in circle of concern =
Stress, frustration and fertile wasted
energy.
Focusing in circle of Influence =
More energy & focus. +
ability to influence increases.
47. 3 CATEGORIES OF
PROBLEMS WE FACE
•Direct
•Indirect
(problems involving our own behavior)
(Problems involving with other people‟s behavior)
•No Control (Problems we can do nothing about like our past or situational
realities)
48. THE “HAVE‟S” AND THE “BE‟S”
The Circle of Concern is filled with the Have‟s.
Examples are:
“If only I had a boss who wasn‟t such a dictator.”
“If only I had a more patient wife.”
“If I had my degree.”
“If I could have more time to myself.”
49. THE “BE‟S”
The Circle of Influence is filled with the Be‟s.
Examples are:
“I‟ll be happy.”
“I‟ll be more patient.”
“I can be loving.”
“I can be wise.”
